The youtube video of a retracting lathe tool on a German website, appears to be able to lift up and glide over the work like a shaper tool. My guess is that if Gray Meek`s rapid reverse for the carriage is used with this shaper style toolholder with a threading tool installed, a screw thread could be very rapidly cut. NB, the rapid traverse mechanism incorporates a single dog tooth clutch drive, enabling correct pick-up every time and no stop-starting lathe. |

Russell, Not sure about running lathe in BG to un-jam a chuck. Sounds like a recipe for stripped gear teeth. A Myford with conjunctivitus? not good! My S7 has a locking pin on the left hand side. I would use that and key in chuck. John |

I have heard of another method of making TE wheels. Make up to size, strips of steel for rims, mill shallow slot, roll up. Bend up on the width, narrow strip of steel which will fit in the slot in the inside of the rim, weld up. Another thing, use AC welding current and you get a bulbous convex fillet but weld with DC current and you get a concave fillet, which looks better. |

Thought it would be obvious that I was joking when I said "Wot spelchekker?" |
22/08/2012 23:04:36 |
wot spelchekker? Does it exist? There are quite a number of mistakes in postings by apparently English people who should know better. |

It seems that what works with one `puter, OS and browser, doesn`t work with another combination. All I can say is that having followed somebody else`s advice on this thread regarding COMPATIBILITY VIEW, I find it works on my set up. As previously stated, it also works on my 3G mobile, without the need to fiddle around with CV. So, Ian, try to find a sympathetic youngster who knows how to overcome `puter probs., as its not baloney as you put it.

Norman, Gordon + anyone else with this prob. My screen shows a toolbar above this Forum. If I click on TOOLS in this toolbar, a drop down box appears with the 4th option of COMPATIBILITY VIEW. If I click on this, another small box appears saying that model-engineer.co is now working in compatibility. Goin back to click on TOOLS, the COMPATIBILITY VIEW now has a tick and you will find that the Forum text is no longer obscured by the adverts. I am using an old version of IE browser on Windows XP Pro. and a 4 yr old Acer dual-core desktop `puter. I think its IE7, but not sure. Hope this helps. John |

Clive, try Chris Heapy`s site. I think he does a table of sizes, pipes/radii etc.. If not, root around various sites run by individuals, because I`ve seen it somewhere! John. |

My 4" 3-jaw (screws on to Myford spindle nose) is a Burnerd and front of chuck is stamped 1,2,3 next to each slot and the matching jaws also stamped on one side. I also have a 6" 4-jaw which is similarly marked. John |

Graeme, Some years sgo, I bought a tube of grey coloured jollop which I think was called "Loy". It was recommended as a filler for blowholes in iron castings and it set really hard. Got it from my favourite car spares shop, "Cliffords of Brighton", now actually in School Rd Hove, if anyone wants to know where they are. Just a very satisfied long-term customer. If this concoction is still on the market, I suddest you try it. regards, John. |

Hi Clive, I agree with you regarding it seems unfair to expect reimbursement of shipping charges on faulty goods. However, that is UK law and if a business exports with higher shipping costs involved then they must accept the risk. I believe that a lot of goods are charged + shipping + Insurance so no doubt they will pit in a claim. See what response tou get and then decide on the next move! Good luck, John. |

Hi Clive, Why dont you send a polite email to the outfit that supplied it,suggesting its not fit for purpose. Did it come from UK? If they reply with a `get lost` sort of attitude, try emailing manufacturer, complaining about their retailer. I should point out that UK law states that you have made a supply contract, by the very act of payment, this usually is the retailer, not distributor or manufacturer and the receiver of that payment is responsible for carrying out that contract. Beware that a lot of retailers seem to `try it on` and fob customers off with faults being the manufacturers problem. I am referring generally, not suggesting that any reputable Model Engineering supplier does that sort of thing. The alternative is the local Consumer Dept at the Council but I dont know if they would do anything about exports. Good luck and let us all know how you get on. Maybe someone else can supply further help if necessary. John. |

Hi all, I am sitting here with a desktop PC running Windows XP PRO, looking at Wolfie`s post of "Setting odd leg calipers" and the first few posts are covered with the RH side adverts. My 3G mobile is also sitting on the desk here and `fired-up` and is also showing the same post but without being obscured. Can anyone tell me why one is OK and the other is naff? The mob is new this year and obviously runs on an up to date version of whatever software, whilst the version of Windows is probably now classed as ancient. Would this be the reason? Any advice apart from `junk the `puter` would be welcome. Thanks. John |
