Thread: Phosphoric Acid experiment |

In praise of Coca-Cola Original; not fit to drink because of high sugar, but a super bog cleaner! Due to Phosphoric acid content. A used toilet cleaner bottle with a bent neck design, re-filled with Coke, ideal for under rim cleaning. And a large bottle works out cheap. Try it sometime! Edited By DMB on 05/07/2022 08:21:01 |

Had to do something, many tools and other items 'lost' due to forgetfulness. Warco bandsaw minus its length stop for many years, simply given up looking for it. Recently had rare need to visit cellar, found a box, wondering what's in it and guess what? Long lost Warco attachment and a few bits of junk! Quick clean up, slightly rusty then fitted it where it belongs. Now I urgently need my circular saw for a pressing job. You'd think a cardboard box that size couldn't be lost - wanna bet! No other human in house to 'interfere' and cat not able to tell me where he's found it. Grrrr! I keep a list of tools and where they're kept, except Mill attachments kept all together in one place. Likewise with Myford items. Plenty of old envelopes from bank and cr card companies, building society etc. Even trying to be organised it's still an uphill struggle to put hand on any wanted item when needed. Need new RAM but NHS not doing them yet, ha,ha. |

The scene is old but the picture isn't as they didn't do colour printing back then. Best that could be done was hand colouring of black and white photographic prints and they only came about late 19th century. John |
Thread: Internet/Organisation |

I recycle old envelopes by using the plain backs like index cards. Each one is titled then a list, e.g., ME ONLINE FORUMS ME/MEW(G-1) followed by the password Followed by other forums The (G-1) tells me that it's on my no. 1 Google account So many sites needing passwords and other security info., I had to devise a way of classifying them in different lists to find details when needed. I found this works quite well. Passwords get change frequently. That fills up space so start new envelope list and shred old one. Another list is titled ME. SUPPLIERS and lists quite a few like Arceuro, Maccmodels, The Tap & Die Co. Includes "The Nut & Bolt Store" as it's a handy local (Hove) emporium, giving their opening times. Another list headed "Internet Traders" for miscellaneous sites like Giffgaff, Cheap Energy Club, MSE(Martin Lewis), Abebooks, Paramo(outdoor clothing), The RAC, Hove Polyclinic phone no. Yet another is ME CLUBS for my membership info. Several more lists, all of which helps me to find which Google or Yahoo account used to access my account and the password. Some cards like financial lack passwords and other vital info just in case of burglary. In fact most passwords have missing characters which I can remember to insert when used. Don't use social media so that much harder for scammers. Still get occasional emails and texts trying to catch me out like the recent one to pay £1.45 before parcel is delivered under threat of returning it on non-payment. As I delete it laughing and commenting well send it back then, ha,ha. Hope the above may be of help to sort out an untidy muddle of sites and forums and which email address and keeping tabs on passwords. John

Thread: Antivirus and VPN |

I have been using free version of AVG for years and always been OK, Very satisfied customer. I use a Samsung 10" Tablet on Android. If a site hasn't got https, it warns me that it's not safe and to go back. An above posting mentioned passwords. Don't use same or even similar on more than one site. Adding one or more characters as a prefix or suffix is really dangerous as it's too weak. Don't incorporate Brunel's initials or of old rly companies as they could be guessed if they know from say social media that you are a railway anorak. Don't use real words, not even with all the vowels removed or substituted by numbers or alternative characters. Just use gobbledegook mix of all the different letters/numbers/special characters that the site will allow - some exclude certain ones.

Thread: Book on lathe operation ? |
20/06/2022 08:50:55 |
There is some good stuff on tube, e.g., Joe Pieczinsnsky. However, at least one channel repeatedly shows videos of the author using his hands as brake pads to stop both lathe and drilling machine chucks from turning after switching off. Potential for serious injuries. Just be careful with copying what you see or are told. |

I am guessing that it's high carbon steel, if so, a small section of gauge plate could be rolled up and tempered? Have a tour of suppliers catalogues, model engineering and clock material suppliers, the latter being a best bet. Alternatively, go back through old volumes of model engineers and see what was recommended by the writers of clock making articles. Good luck. John

Thread: Parting off small screws - well, it may be new to somebody |
15/06/2022 14:46:15 |
I have a small muck tray under the chuck, travels with the saddle, slotted to slide under the hex hd BSF screw in the lower left side. Myford tapped it to hold their travelling steady which I rarely use or need. Small parted off items drop into tray. Use old toothbrush to sweep swarf overboard down back of lathe where it falls into an old shallow baking tray for occasional clean up. The permanently fitted BSF screw keeps swarf out of the tapped hole. Tray keeps muckiest part of lathe bed clean. John |

Can't resist mentioning a Myford repaint job that I've seen - Maroon! Not done by me. Not saying who owner is. Think that if I was buying it, I would have demanded a whopping price reduction.

Thread: Shed floor |
05/06/2022 15:25:29 |
Chris, I had my Myford rocking on a thick board floor in my old workshop. Cured by what's been said above - cut out section of floor and built a concrete slab. Current workshop, put M on existing concrete floor. OK, but I found that I got back ache as it's too low. Temporary shift of lathe while I built two brick piers to boost its height. Piers arranged front to back of lathe stand, under the bolting down "feet but not actually bolted down - it doesn't move and hasn't for years. John |
Thread: Wooden Toolbox Choice |
04/06/2022 07:31:23 |
I bought a metal box years ago, looks like a Halfords, in black, almost new condition. Lovely box in regular usage. Also have two traditional English style engineers toolboxes, very nice, often used, mainly storage. Have several of the old barn type steel boxes for large spanners, hammers etc. Thoroughly recommend the first three mentioned by me. John |

John Hinkley
You mentioned"Harrington". Would that indicate some sort of modification by Harrington's Motors in Hove, Sussex? They did a lot of work on coaches and in fact I believe their site was known as Harrington's Coach works. John |
Thread: New-style cover finish |
20/05/2022 20:06:14 |
Very unhappy customer. I might be getting on a bit but I'm amenable to change but only if its any good. Don't see any benefit to me with this change, so what's in it for them? Only and inconvenient solution is to make two opposing piles with edges and the spines outward, so that they hold each other in place. Grrrr! |

Andrew, Being curious/nosey, what's that contraption mounted on a board behind the home made oilcan? John |
20/05/2022 09:18:42 |
Guy Lautard once wrote about oilcan probs and how he solved them. He bought a new grease gun and modified it. Sorry, but cannot now remember in which of his books that it appeared. |

Thread: New-style cover finish |
20/05/2022 09:01:00 |
First thoughts were, there we go again, since the ultra shiny covers were introduced several years ago. Such a fuss was made and the publisher at that time reverted to their previous semi gloss finish. Wonder why it is used? Surely not as another "buy me" gimmick on WH Smith's shelves? Another of my subscriptions comes sealed (well and truly!) in a paper envelope, but it's always (every month) glued to the inside of the envelope! Grrrr! John |
Thread: This trolley/cart could be useful |

Michael, Agreed, appears to be potentially very useful. Pity about spelling error but that seems to be very common these days. John |
