Great link that---did not realise there was so much variety of material.
 
Are the filled materials also as machinable?
 
Not going to use it for anything critical but found nylon certainly hydroscopic when trying to fit some large premachined bushes the other week, had to warm them up presumably to dry out before they were the right size!

I take your points about sharp tools and sunlight. A bit of Delrin sounds ideal for what I need so I will order some offcuts pronto.

I like to keep a a bit of "plastic" rod in the workshop, just in case. But I have now run out of stock and while looking around e-bay see that there is a vast choice. Just for odd jobs what is best/easiest to machine from natural nylon,  polypropylene etc?

Thread: Cup wheel for finish grinding mild steel

I have a number of flat head mild steel screws to finish. I thought it would speed things up a bit if I mounted them in the wheel head unit to grind on my Jones & Shipman T&C grinder. The setup works fine but I cannot get a decent finish with the grinding wheels I have.
 
Not very experienced with grinding so have been reading the books (always dangerous!) and it looks like I need A320 grade, all mine seem to be 60, Anyone have any ideas where to get a suitable cup wheel 31.75 bore, or will a diamond do the job without breaking the bank?

Thanks for the reply---I have a copy of that article by Rex, also an article by Dick Stephen here in the UK. Both agree and make interesting reading so I am going to use them in my next clock.
 
I wonder what the downside is---apart from the cost of buying them!

Just read some interesting articles about using minature ball races in clocks to reduce friction at the various pivots. See that some high quality clocks (Erwin Sattler?) are quoted as using them everywhere as well as jewels.
 
Seems a good idea to me but have never used them before---has anyone tried this and what were the results?

 I have had the remains of this small instrument lathe for ages. Just put it into my parts washer and I am surprised to see that the cross slide and heads stock is brass. Also the height of the tool can be adjusted with the screw in picture 2.
 
Has anyone seen a lathe like this before? and can anyone suggest a maker?

First time I have tried this technique but very pleased with the result. The cut edge looks like it has been sand blasted, it also has a slight edge underneath the cut. The plate edge only needs polishing with the odd blemish needing drawfiling first. Seems to be very accurate on sizes also where the holes have been cut.
 
As far as I am concerned it is 100% success after the previous try with the drawings failed. The main job that the cutters were doing was fancy shapes in coloured bricks and stone for a shopping centre.

What is the best way to get hold of an article from ME 15th July and 19th August 1983 about wheel crossing by J Malcolm Wild?
 
Also an article about a  One year Clock by W Botton to a Claude Reeve design put out as a Model Engineer series started 3rd Aug 1984?

Thanks for the suggestion about Picaxe John . Never heard about them before and of course never programed anything---yet!    It would certainly make sense to be able to program it myself so that I could vary the numbers to suit, bound to need some tweaking
 
Do you have any personal experience of using these devices?
 
As you expect I see that there is a forum so will do some reading.

Thanks everyone for the response, I certainly did not find that ic on the RS site! I thought they should be everywhere,  One of the annoying things is I have some of the Jerry Howell ones somewhere but unfindable at present..
 
I want to use it to count coach wheel revoutions and and use the number of pulses generated to swicth a pump on and off to spray water and prevent wheel squeal. I hope to use a PIC to do the counting, cannot program one myself but hope to find some help.

I would like to use a hall effect sensor ic similar to what is used in the Hemingway and Jerry Howell ignition systems but I am unable to find a suitable part no for just the sensor ic?
 
Does anyone have a part number for one of these 3 legged devices which is readily available?

Just had the front and back plates water jet cut after a friend converted the drawing into a dxf file. Really pleased as this has solved what I stalled on last time I tried to make this clock! I thought here my have been someone else out there who has made or attempted this interesting clock.

Has anyone constructed the Claude Reeve Gravity Regulator, originally in ME 1960? Tried a few years ago and gave up after getting lost amongst the drawings!
Just bought the book updating it by John Wilding so going to try again

Made a filing machine from the  Metal Lathe Accessories kit and it works very well. Fairly easy to make, I have added some oil seals as a precauition. Good instructions and information from Andy Lofquist  about how to make the files needed. Also intended to use it for crossing out clock wheels but so far have only used it to form an internal square for a machine handle when it was really easy to make a good fit.
