Here is the cylinder layout

As a long term project I'm designing a locomotive. The prototype has four cylinders, two cylinders each side outside the frames one above the other. The top cylinders are mounted with an incline of plus two degrees from the horizontal and the bottom cylinders mounted with an incline of minus two degrees from the horizontal. Would I be better having the steam chests as single units with two D slides and connected steam chambers and exhaust ports in each one or separate steam chests for each cylinder.

How did you fit the pivot block on the under side of the barrel.

Thread: Help with rotary table

When cutting spokes on a fly wheel by removing segments on a rotary table how do I ensure that the spokes are square to the hub and not leaning forward or backwards.

Great quote from Bladerunner

"I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion."

Strange how you get "bald" patches, devoid of craters.

Thread: Lost and Found
22/06/2018 12:01:14

Not so much as lost and found but being in the wrong place at the wrong time.

I once drive to do a job at a dairy near Bridlington only to realise on arrival that I should have been at a bakery in Plymouth.

Thread: Quick milling question
22/06/2018 11:05:13

Cutting a slot in MS with 1/2" end mill. What is maximum depth of cut I can take in each pass.

Thread: New Milling Machine - advice requested
16/06/2018 10:01:20

looking at Niels link the HBM BF 25 looks identicle to a Warco wm 14. The cost of the HBM is €1199.99 ( £966 ) and the Warco is €1036 ( £835 ). Even with shipping the warco might work out slightly cheaper.

Thread: Bending brass

I need to put a sharp 90 degree bend in 4mm dia brass rod. Will it bend cold or would I need to apply heat.

Thread: Lathes and more
26/05/2018 10:16:20

Looking at the latest "lathes and more" article ME 4587 p766 fig.15 may leave the beginner wondering where they can obtain a milling cutter for use when the direction of rotation is reversed.

It should show the direction of feed reversed not the rotation of the cutter.

Thread: Superglue for holding workpieces
19/05/2018 10:00:58

Having watched the video, all the super glue does is bond two pieces of tape together. The adhesive strength of the tape is what holds the Aluminium.Surely a large piece of double sided tape will do the job without the need for super glue.

Thread: Silver soldering contradiction
12/04/2018 09:50:53

There appears to be a contradiction of opinions regarding silver soldering in the latest addition of ME no.4584.

On p585 it states there must be a gap of 0.1mm for capillary action to take place and on p594 it states that all joints are pulled up tight with no obvious gaps even to the extent of riveting parts together

Gap or no gap ?

Thread: Lister engines
08/04/2018 10:30:34

In ME 4584 there is an advert for an auction that includes a number of restored Lister engines.

Does anyone know the going price of a restored Lister engine.

Thread: ME & E magazine

Where would I find back issues of the Model Engineer and Electrician magazine from the 1920's, SMEE or the British Library.

Also would any articles be subject to copyright

Thread: Slitting saw question
02/03/2018 09:21:25

I'll be cutting a piece of mild steel (EN1A) with a slitting saw on a WM14 mill.I'll be cutting to a depth of about 1/2". Two questions,

1) course or fine saw

2) depth of cut

It's as easy as 01 10 11
