I've been turning (conquest super) some 1/2" square MS. down to 7/16" Dia. Each cut was 0.010 over a length of 2", supported by a centre in the tail stock and held in a 4 jaw self entering chuck. The intermittent cutting caused the chuck to open slightly and the job to come loose. Would I have been better using a 4 jaw independent chuck.

Which tap gives better performance. Carbon steel or HSS

I have a boring head from Arc Euro. The graduated dial to increase the radius of the tool only has graduations and no indication of how much each graduation represents. Any idea ?

The machine is a Warco WM14 cutting mild steel 2" wide by 4" long

I have a small amount of machining to do that requires fly cutting. Would you use a boring head which I have or get a fly cutter.

The hammer in the background is a planishing hammer. I can remember using one in the school metal work class to decorate a copper serviette ring.

Am I missing something here. Everyone is giving a load of calculations. Why not just divide 0.365 by 0.025. simples.

Once again I'm awaiting delivery of the latest issue of ME magazine (4655), Is there any reason for late delivery or am I just unlucky.

Not built the grasshopper yet been busy building the beam engine. Grasshopper is on my to do list.

If anyone has a mini lathe ie. Chester Conquest Super you will have to use a flywheel of 7" Dia. or less. The flywheel for the Stuart Beam Engine should be a suitable substitute .

I've seen quite a few models of stationary steam engines with guard railings. How do you make and secure yours.

Make sure your cutter is sharp.Yesterday I had to take a centre punch and hammer to mine to remove the build up.

We've probably all had it happen at some time or other and that is have a drill run off centre when drilling brass. but why does it happen in brass and not in mild steel.
