Hi My thanks to IanT, Thor and JohnF for their offers of help. I now have all the articles I was looking for. I’ve spent this afternoon, reading through the articles in preparation for the build. The castings etc I have are part machined, and it look like the work already done is to a high standard. I now need to understand the modifications that have been done to the original design and if I should/could incorporate them I think my next job is to document the tooling that came with a Clarkson T+C grinder, I purchased 6 years ago with the intention of getting it up and running. It’s stayed in the corner since, and now I have this project, I think it is time to release both the money and the space. Thank you to all the offers of help Tony |

Hi Is anybody able to help me with getting copies of the Model engineer article series on “Building the Stent Tool and Cutter Grinder” ? The Online archive doesn’t go back far enough. The table below confirms which year and volume the articles appeared in. If you are able to help please private message me. I’d be happy to pay any reasonable costs for copying and posting. Re: machining experience (zero)... some thoughts The SMEE run courses on “Basic Training for Model Engineers” , “Lathe Tool Grinding” and “Milling”. I’ve done the lathe tool grinding and milling courses both of which I found useful in raising my knowledge base The SMEE run a Building a Simple Steam Engine (“The Polly Course). I haven’t done this one, but those that have give it a ”thumbs up” . The bad news is that the Polly Course only runs one a year and has already started Tony Edited By Antony Price on 17/06/2019 09:46:17 |

Hi JB I’ve just spent the last week sorting out my Harrison T300 lathe...I tried using the Rollie Dads method but found the accumulation of errors (taper adaptor, test bar etc) difficult to resolve, so went for levelling the lathe. Having levelled the lathe, I did a test piece and had an error of 1/1000” over about 6”. Tweaking the relevant lathe foot, now gives me no error over 6” If you would like a recommendation: the level I used was a Moore And Wright Machinists Spirit Level. 12”/300mm. I found it perfect for the job required. My level was second hand, from the well known auction site. I’ve just checked and there is one currently available (buy it now £79.99) Hope this helps Tony |

Hi David I would another reference book along side “Screw cutting in the lathe” . For Christmas, I was given “The Gearing of lathes for Screwcutting “ (Crowood Metalworking Guides). It has two chapters “The Myford ML7 and Variants” and “The Myford ML7 with the David Machin Gearbox”. It has lots of detail and, in my opinion well worth the purchase price

Hi Rod and John The problem might be the different expansion rates of the metal to the insulation. Try SikaFlex 512, which is the product used for mounting solar panels on campers/mobile homes...to quote the manufacturer "Sikaflex 512 is a flexible adhesive to allow different materials to expand and contract at different rates" Most importantly make sure that both surfaces are abraded and cleaned. Sikaflex instructions say 3mm bed minimum. Just one note of caution! Its good stuff, once its set you will need to chisel it off to remove it Tony

My thoughts! Install a damp proof membrane under the slab Minimum of 100mm/4” Check out and agree the mix ratios prior to work being done. In my case what went in was a bit weak on the cement, which resulted in a dusty top layer Tony |

Hi Keith Thanks for the prompt, I'll look into it next week. I'm hoping to attend the CuP Alloys on the Road 2018 Club night at Grimsby, on the 17th April. Hopefully I'll be able to say hello there?
Hi Fizzy Thanks for the offer, I've sent you a private message

Hi I’m hoping that somebody with brazing equipment is willing to help me! The door handle (see photos) is from a 1920’s building and suffered some metal fatigue. I’ve made a repair, which just needs silver soldering into the door handle boss. I’ve tried today with my “plumbers” blow torch, but I can’t get it hot enough to melt the silver solder. Is there somebody in the Yorkshire area (I live in Leeds) who has the correct kit and is willing to help me? The silver solder I’m using (CuP Alloys 455), has a melting point of 630C - 660C Thanking in anticipation Tony
