Thread: Q: Alternative to model live steam?
01/04/2013 19:45:39

For what it's worth a steam engine is not a pressure engine but an expansion engine ie relying on the expansion of the steam in the cylinder and not pressure alone.Just my observation.

For a grand piano take off the legs and pedel box, put the piano on a trolley on its side. The legs are designed for easy removal. 2 blokes can move one bur easier with 3.Used to move a lot of pianos.

Thread: Is an old lathe worth bothering with ?

My first lathe was a very old one (think Noah had it on the ark) it did it's job fairly well after some fetteling.

Thread: Reamers
12/02/2013 19:43:22

Bought a set from an reputable online supplier I could have done a better job with a blunt file. They chatter like a load of sparrows,my fault though I should have bought a decent set in the first place.I have used quality ones in the past with no problems.I now tend to buy the reamer I need for the job as I go.

Stuart don't think you will be unhappy with the WM250,I would buy another if I had too. It doesn't take up much room in the shed,my shed is 8x10 feet got lathe, mill, floor standing pillar drill two benches one with a simat 101 lathe on it a motorbike, bandsaw and room for the dog (just) when I'm down here!

I've got one,had it for a few years now and am pleased with it.It does all I ask of it( and takes a bit of abuse!) only complaint there is no back gear as standard but have made a set of parts for one, to fit when I get round to it.

Thread: Water filter for injector
08/02/2013 19:48:28

I make them from brass gauze. Make a nut to fit the feed pipe in the tender, drill a hole through the nut,put a 20mm dia x 1mm deep counterbore in the top end of the nut, solder the gauze into the counterbore there you have it a filter removable for cleaning. Some on ebay.

Thread: Plating solid lubricants on highly stressed parts
19/01/2013 15:15:23

We used to use a dry film lube on the fan blade root on RB211 engines which had to be baked on,but for the life of me I can't remember what it was called.I doubt that you would be able to source ant for home use.Sorry I can't be any more help.
