The great thing about HSS was that it would hold its temper at red heat, not a situation a tap is likely to encounter. Carbon steel has alot of fans for taking a keener edge than HSS. Taps made from HSS are usually ground after hardening which makes a high quality tap. I do not think HSS is any tougher than properly hardened and tempered carbon steel. What do the metalurgists think? Mike |

Carbon steel taps can be softened if you have the misfortune to break one in steel,EDM is probably the only solution with HSS Mike |
Thread: Another motor wiring question |
23/06/2013 14:31:49 |
Rectifying the mains which if you are in th UK is most likely to be 240v will give a peak voltage of nearly 340v applying smoothing will bring the DC voltage well above the 200/220 the motor is rated at. It may run happily for ever on this supply or may shorten its life. Mike

This has a 100hp variable speed DC motor on the spindle. I think it would take some stalling but it did take some rather large cutters

If it posed athreat to a population centre or other aircraft I am sure it would be shot down. Mike |

It would appear the Align power feed units can be fitted with over travel limit switches, so if a relay is wired to be energised by the motor power (after the contactor and overload) then a contact from this relay could be wired into the overtravel circuit which would stop the feed if the motor power failed. Sensors are available to detect shaft motion and one of these could be used in the same way. A bypass would be useful for the rapid travel and setting up without the spindle running, but the manual handles are always available. Mike |

Cutwel list this holder and supply inserts. It is a Korloy Alpha mill and takes APMT11T3 inserts looks like they are around £5 each so about £135 to fully populate it. Mike Edited By Michael Poole on 23/05/2013 20:09:52 |

I find the biggest irratation with cap screws is that the socket fills with swarf, the larger sizes use square heads and don't retain swarf. mike |

2BA is another thread very close to M5x0.8. Myford use both on the ML7R cross slide adjusment and locking screws be careful not to mix them up. Mike Edited By Michael Poole on 22/04/2013 23:25:02 |
Thread: First attempt at silver soldering :-( |
22/04/2013 03:17:55 |
the components to be silver soldered will need to reach the red heat range. Silver solders melt in the range 630 - 780 degrees which is in the red heat range. The top end of this range may be a bit ambitious for a propane torch. Mike Edited By Michael Poole on 22/04/2013 03:19:46 |

Thread: Enquiry into functionality of NVR (No voltage release) switches for 3 phase and single phase machine tools |
20/04/2013 14:56:22 |
The purpose of the NVR is to prevent the automatic restart of equipment in the event of a supply failure. It is desireable to use an NVR on a machine tool as in the event of power failure the machine will stop, if we rely on the operator to turn off the machine he may not realise what has happened and not turn it off, when power is restored he may not be in attendance when the machine restarts and if any auto feeds were engaged major damage to the work or machine could occur, injury could occur if the operator or third party were working on the machine when auto restart happens. Auto restart is often required on devices like pumps where no equipment or operator damage will occur. On a large piece of eqipment the NVR will kill the whole control circuit. On a device like a motor starter the contactor will serve the purpose of NVR and motor starter, the motor overload unit will often be wired into this contactor. The other conditions like low voltage and phase failure are not the function of an NVR. Mike |

I find trig useful on an almost daily basis. Forty one years after leaving school I have yet to have a need for quadratic equations, simultaneous equations, set theory, calculus, statistics or any of the other stuff that in my case has proved to be irrelavent, maybe other people live in a world where this is useful but it is not in mine. Thread: Inverters and clutches . |
20/03/2013 16:45:57 |
If your lathe has a screw on chuck or faceplate I think a rapid stop could cause the chuck to unscrew. An inverter can stop the machine much quicker than just cutting the power. Robots stop much quicker using a controlled stop rather than just cutting power when the braking will be by mechanical brakes which are only designed to support the arm after it has stopped. If you have a camlock chuck fixing Some savage rates of deceleration can be used provided the regenerated current is dumped into a resistor to stop the DC link voltage rising too high which will fault the drive, this will also cause some attrition to the mechanical parts of the drivetrain as previously mentioned. A clutch has much to recommend it. Mike Edited By Michael Poole on 20/03/2013 16:57:03 |
