The impression that I get is the Chinese manufactures will make what you ask them to make. I spoke to a chap at a model show who had some dealings with the Chinese manufacturers, he said the Chinese view of the British was they wanted the cheapest price possible whereas the Germans were interested in quality. I think the perception of poor quality is what you get at the cheapest price, pay more and you can have better quality. Most of the products we associate as quality items are made in Asia/China. BMW build cars in China, I am sure they and all the other top brands will not risk their reputations on shoddy goods, so the Chinese build what they require. I am sure a Myford could be built in China to Myfords fit finish and accuracy but it would probably only come out a bit cheaper than Uk manufacture. The post war Myfords were not at the bottom end of the market in their day but were so much better than the opposition alot of people scrimped and saved to buy one. The market that was wiped out first was the bottom end Uk manufacturers, the Asian machines for all their faults were a massive bargain and streets ahead of the cheap Uk machines. Eventually the price quality equasion made it hard to justify the extra money to buy British. Us home shop machinists probably had a free ride on the back of educational supply anyway and with the decline of that market no one could make a living out of the Uk HSM market. Mike

Have given up on HiFi now, the Conways are suffering the ignomy of being used as a shelf for Bluray player and Humax until a suitable unit is found. Music is now streamed from Nas drive to Sonos powered speakers and Playbar. Not an unpleasent sound, but it's not HiFi by any stretch of the imagination. CDs now stored. Mike |

I think that the human part of any quality device can be the weak link, after 40 years of aural abuse I don't think my ears would be impressed by a high end HiFi, riding a motorcycle that had my ears ringing after 1 hour and friends refusing to follow me, years of rock concerts and pub rock on a regular basis, ears ringing for 3 days after a Ted Nugent gig. Put me in a Mercedes F1 car and I dont think Lewis Hamilton would be too worried. I doubt that owning a Dean Smith and Grace lathe would make me a first class machinist. My wife, and it seems most other wives are not impressed by Hd TV or HiFi I am often assured that her friend has some tiny speakers that sound good and do we really need my Castle Conways as they take up so much space. The tumbler gears are different sizes, I would check they are fitted in the correct position. Refer to the parts drawing on the Myford site under the ML7 spares section. Mike |

I am a Meddings owner and would recommend their machines. With your budget it will be a used machine, some very good machines turn up on ebay which is where I sourced mine and I am pleased with my purchase. Mike |
Thread: Need a three Phase Motor |
21/07/2014 22:34:28 |
Most motors in the UK are specified for 50Hz , so a 4 pole machine will have a theoretical speed of 1500rpm, the plate will have a value like 1430rpm. The frame size will fix the shaft size, height from base and mounting dimensions. If your current motor is a standard size it should be possible to match a 3 phase one. Mike |
Thread: External Circlips Quality |
16/07/2014 11:05:57 |
Hi Mark, I was the ear with the hole for the circlip pliers that broke off and did the damage, perhaps soft end caps are the safest option to retain a gudgeon pin. Mike |
15/07/2014 23:18:33 |
Despite the advice in the workshop manual to replace the gudgeon pin circlips, I, not having any to hand and anxious to get the bike back on the road, reused them. This was an expensive mistake. Some weeks later a ticking noise started to come from the engine, I ignored this for a while as performance still seemed OK however the trident was an engine prone to rocker box oil leaks so a top end strip was a fairly regular task. With the head off a deep pit was noticed in the cylinder liner. With the barrels off I found the end of the gudgeon pin circlip had broken off and had dug a hole in the liner. So a component worth pennies had done many pounds worth of damage. An expensive lesson and maybe the guys at Triumph did know what they are talking about. For the last 35 years I have not reused a circlip in a critical application. I note that wire circlips are often used for gudgeon pins rather than the pressed type with ears. Mike |

Ken Sprayson is a legend in the motorcycling world. I would be surprised if he has nothing useful or relavent to say to wide rangeing interests of the MEW readership. I am a motorcyclist as well as model builder (as many of us seem to be or have been), I went to the IOM TT 7 years running when Ken ran a frame repair service for the racers to fix the damage the TT course meted out to bikes. Looking forward to his article. Mike |

Schnecken is one to watch out for in Germany, at breakfast you will get a sticky bun, but at dinner you will get snails. I orderded schnecken with garlic butter for a starter, the waiter smirked at my order so I had to eat them. I have not forgotten that translation to this day. They were OK but I have not repeated the mistake. Mike |
Thread: WD40 alternative - any good? |
14/06/2014 20:17:41 |
My son, who was learning to play electric guitar at the time, jokingly said he was going to get some WD40 after watching Slim play at the guitar show. Slim is certainly a talented guy, I like the part of the show when he and the bass player walk through the audience and swap instruments then he swaps with the drummer when they get back to the stage. Slim from the now defunct rock band The Hamsters kept a cloth sprayed with WD40 in his back pocket to wipe his guitar strings and fret board with, must help with sliding the fingers along the strings and stop damage from sweat. Mike |

Down in sunny Oxford we have just had 12,000 solar panels installed on the bodyshop roof, should generate about 3.4Mw on a sunny day, Mike |
