I wonder how many of those Holley planes are manufactured or sold every year.

Thread: Taking the p**s!! |
03/08/2023 17:33:24 |
Bought a second hand Land Rover Discovery 3 about 9 years ago and it only had one key with it, so off to the main dealers and they charged £500 for the key and keyfob plus half hours labour to program new key and reprogram the original one plus of course VAT on top of all that. Had to go to main dealer, seems they have a monopoly on the sale of keys, also had to provide proof of ID and take logbook with me. I guard the two keys with my life. |

Make them a bit slack and over the short length required you may get away with 5/32 x 40 ME. Easy enough though to screwcut, it going out to the workshop to check because it is chucking it down but I am sure Myfords QC box cuts 42 tpi. |

Thread: Recommendations sought for a non-shrinking, non-spill oil pot. |
30/07/2023 18:00:16 |
Wife bought half a dozen of these non spill pots in The Works, used them for the grandkids when they were painting, I nicked a couple for the workshop and they have had neat cutting oil in them for over a year with absolutely no problems, don’t know the spec of the neat cutting oil but it is the stuff that Warco sell |
Thread: Kennet tool & cutter grinder |

Universal abrasives are one of the largest suppliers of grinding wheels, all sorts of grinding wheels, not just diamond. I have just searched for 3 inch cup wheels and dozens have come up, same for taper cups, I suggest you search the internet. |

There should be something to provide some friction so perhaps a wave washer and circlip are missing. |
Thread: Sheet Metalwork |
27/07/2023 12:37:42 |
The 3 in 1 machines are better than nothing, I have a 12 inch Warco version and the vee bender is next to useless, the guillotine works but only on very thin material, I tend to only cut brass shim on it, the roller is perhaps it’s best feature. To sum up I suppose it does the job. |

Have you asked Chester after all they sell the cutter they should know the type of inserts it will take. |
Thread: Tony Seba’s Prediction |
23/07/2023 12:18:10 |
Can we please have a description of the content, Is it just me who gets totally p***ed off at people who just post links to things without any description. I have absolutely no idea who Tony Seba is and what he predicted and don’t click on links without a bit of information. |
Thread: Uncertainty of Measurement |

Maybe you should have purchased it from a company that will issue a C of C with it, you will then know exactly what you have. |
Thread: Blackgates ( ex Southworth) 3" vertical steam pump |
18/07/2023 19:04:16 |
Graham question 1 centre lines are the same, you are correct that drawing does not show shuttle valve centre line. Question 2 my drawing shows .230 centres, no way is that correct, what it should be is .230 either side of centre, .460 apart, the .500 dim is correct. The hole pattern is the same as item 6, a .650 pad. Question 3 I don’t, if your holes are in the right place the top / bottom holes will just miss the portface holes C on item 7. Make sure your shuttle valve is free to move, don’t use any liquid gasket, if you must use gaskets thin brown paper only and make sure all the holes are cut through, I don’t use gaskets all faces are rubbed on 600 grit wet or dry paper in fig 8 pattern until flat, couple of thou plus or minus on thickness won’t matter but not being flat will cause problems. Hope this helps, anything else just ask. These are lovely little pumps, they will go down to six strokes per min easily on about 35 psi, I use one on a small stationary steam plant as the only means of filling the boiler, apart from a hand pump. |

Thread: Do you need an oil change with less than 10,000 miles in 10 years? |
16/07/2023 15:17:33 |
Seem to remember hearing quite a few years ago about American engines that were sealed for life, no way to change oil or filter, and I believe guaranteed for hundred thousand miles. Anyone know anything about them? |
Thread: a machinist making a knife |
15/07/2023 13:25:53 |
I won’t be watching it because knives don’t interest me but I am sure it is a very skilful process. The only knife I need is my dear old Swiss Army knife, a blade for opening packets and parcels, a corkscrew for the odd bottle of plonk and a bottle opener for my beer, alas the thing for getting stones out of horses hooves is now redundant, the daughter had her horse put down. On a serious note I don’t think the video will affect knife crime figures, the scrotes who go round stabbing people are probably not capable of making their own weapons. |
Thread: Nineteen year old magazine |
14/07/2023 20:51:20 |
I went into town this morning and missed the bus home, while waiting for the next one I went in to WH Smith and browsed through the magazines, I purchased a Model Engineer 4721 which was wrapped in a plastic bag with another magazine, couldn’t see the title but never mind I was sure it would be something interesting. Got home and took the magazines out of the wrapper and the free one turned out to be Heritage Railway so made a cuppa and settled down for a read, flicked through to see what delights were in store for me and something didn’t seem right, then I got to an advert for a classic bike show, dated 2004, upon further investigation the date on the front of the magazine is No 62 June 2004. What’s going on, why are nineteen year old magazines being bundled with current magazines, have Morton’s decided its a good way to get rid of a pile of old back numbers or am I missing something? Thread: Sifbronze or silver solder? |

If you are going to squeeze the sleeve tightly together how is silver solder going to flow into the gap? All you will do is melt silver solder over the top of the crack. |
Thread: New IC engine deal |
12/07/2023 12:36:42 |
Like Bill I thought internal combustion was finished, no new cars with I.C. to be sold after 2030? I suppose though that only applies to the UK and while we are all struggling with electric only the rest of the world will be using these new design engines. Only after the government have ripped all the diesel and petrol pumps up will they decide that perhaps I.C. has a future after all. |
Thread: Balancing Bench Grinder Wheels |

Posted by David Ambrose on 11/07/2023 12:23:04: Does a Men’s Shed count as a commercial place? Asking for a friend. Why not enquire at the local Health and Safety department, you will get the answer from the horses mouth rather than ten different opinions from ten different people. One thing that is for certain is that an accident with a grinding wheel will bring a lot of unwelcome attention anywhere away from your house or workshop using it for your hobby. |
