Thread: What Did you do Today 2022
08/09/2022 09:26:11

Hi mgnbuk. The motor and inverter came as a package, which according to the literature which came with it, just needed connecting up as it was all pre-programmed. I will have to check the manual (on a CD) which came with the product, regarding programming. Thanks for the advice.

As for enclosure, I have been searching different component suppliers, trying to find one which is deep enough, but not too big width or height wise. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Today I finally powered up the 3 phase conversion on my Clarke CL300 lathe. The lathe was originally supported on two lengths of 80mm square tube, which brought it up to comfortable working height for me and also enabled me to fit a coolant tank underneath the chip tray. As the new motor was considerably larger than the original one, it had to be mounted behind the lathe. A new longer length of 8omm square tube was fitted to carry the motor and the old motor housing was fitted with a new shaft to carry two pulleys and thus act as a countershaft.

The inverter was mounted on the wall behind the lathe, with a combined NVR switch and emergency stop fitted in the modified control box fitted to the lathe. The switch is fitted in the mains supply going to the inverter. Normally the motor is controlled by the inverters pendant buttons.

The box was also fitted with the RPM display and a switched supply for the coolant pump.

The CL300 specifies spindle speeds of 100 to 2500 RPM. On test, my new arrangement gave me a maximum of 480rpm in low gear and 1060 high gear, with the inverter running at 58Hz. I had read the specification for the new motor, so this was not unexpected. I will try a larger pulley on the motor (40 teeth instead of the present 20). This should not be a problem for the half HP motor as the one it is replacing was only rated at 250 watts.

In my workshop, I replaced the 2 original 80 watt fluorescent lights with 6 standard size LED lamps of 9 watts each (equivalent to 60 watt incandescent). This not only halved the power consumed by the lights but brightness was improved as well. I have also fitted switches so that the two banks of three can be switched on and off as required. 27 watts may not seem much of a saving to some, but every little helps.

The last time I googled "Anthony Knights", I read he owned Farnborough football club.

Thread: mini lathe speed control
28/08/2022 12:32:21

It has been suggested on other threads on this subject, that the control board can be tested using a 60 watt incandescent (not LED) lamp as a load instead of the motor. If the lamp dims and brightens with the speed control, the board is probably OK.

Personally, I am fed up with fragile Chinese electronics. I recently had to change the motor on my CL300, only to have the control board fail a few weeks later. I have now almost completed converting my machine to 3 phase inverter control using a package from Newton Tesla. Expensive, but should last me out.

Best of luck. Anthony

Seems to be getting over complicated here. Peter Cook 6 has the best suggestion- reverse the motor (KISS).

When I was a lad, the population of this country was about 42 million. There was a "pie" called the country's resources, of which we all got a slice. It is now said to be 65 million (that's the ones we know about). Consequently, every body's slice of pie is now smaller, even though it's still bigger that that of third world countries.

It is an inescapable fact, that the more people there are, the less there is to go round. Be wary of making quips about "Logan's Run and Carousel" as you could be nearer to the truth than you think.

Successive governments have continuously put off doing anything about ensuring secure and reliable vital services such as water and energy for this country. The can has been continually kicked down the road in the hope the next lot will deal with it. We have now reached the end of the road and the can has fallen off the cliff at it's end. No doubt we will be shortly be getting a statement from our new Prime Minister which be loudly accompanied by the sound of slamming stable doors.

I think you will find that the Clarke CL300 is the same machine listed as SC2 in the Arc Euro machine spares. That's where I have got bits for my CL300 in the past. ( I am currently in the process of converting to a 3 phase inverter + 1/2 HP motor combination from Newton Tesla, having given up with the original control arrangements)

Perhaps it is the case, especially in the south, of not too little water but rather too many people.

Apparently we are being subjected to hose pipe bans because we are short of water.flood.jpg

Gold as a multiplier is x 0.1 ohms. Gold as tolerance is 5%. That would make your resistor 2 ohms if it wasn't for the 4th black band. Don't know what that is there for.**LINK**

Isn't this country a strange place. People (including myself), spend large sums of money, to go abroad and spend time in temperatures like this. When we get it for free, every body moans. OMG it's so hot, the roads are melting, we're having power cuts and the internet keeps dropping out, etc, etc.

In the winter we only need a few millimeters of snow and the country grind to a halt. Tomorrow we are going to get organised. Famous last words.

Anyone with a bit of electrical knowledge could soon sort that out with an additional switch and some additional wiring.

Are these products safe?

I'm nervous about running software that requires Anti-virus to be disabled and also demands the 'Never Notify' security override to be set. The latter allows an application to install and run other programs without notifying the owner or being given permission. I'd want solid reassurances before risking a third-party Activator: if it's a wrong'un, it will do whatever it likes with your computer.

Dave

The item in question is a 3.2Mb exe file which I have used myself to activate a windows 7 installation for the same reasons as the OP. You run the program once after installing the operating system and it is then activated. I run windows 7 with internet dis-abled and have had no problems. I use Linux most of the time for just about every thing else. Linux can of course "see" the windows operating system and can manipulate the files.

05/07/2022 13:54:05

Mr Tinsley, sir. If you have an installation disc, there is something you can download from the internet, which will activate your installation. As you have already paid for the windows 7, I don't see there is a problem doing it this way. I have sent you a PM.

I have always separated metal lids/caps from glass containers before recycling. We have four wheelie bins. brown for paper/cardboard, green for garden waste, blue for cans, glass and plastic and grey for anything else. Any food waste goes into a compost bin in the back garden. Presumably, the contents of the blue bin are relatively easy to separate.
