Thread: Looking for some help / guidance / training in the Chepstow area
08/09/2013 17:02:24

Hi Denis, I too was like you, many years ago ,woodwork and metal work teachers were all taken to fight in the war and we never got to learn these crafts. When I retired I had the wish to make something, and like you bought a lathe ,Saw some books in the "Workshop practise series "

Now have most of them, and very slowly sitting in front of the lathe with book in one hand have managed to produce , from castings ,a Stuart mill engine ,never steamed but it works on compressed air. If I can do it so can you ,do not give up .The joy I felt when that started to turn I will always remember. He who never made a mistake ,never made anything.!

good luck Maurice

Thread: Cutting gauge glass to length
19/08/2013 10:19:36

Hi Mike . Never make the cut all way round ,only a third will be better. Put the mark on top, bend glass down and pull at same time. If you have a diamond tile cutter that will do it but more trouble.

I have broken many tubes the first way and no problem .Was a lab tech for many years

Good luck Maurice

Thread: Carbide grinding wheel
16/07/2013 21:07:17

Hi Ossie as you have now bought a wheel look on internet for GRINDING WHEEL DRESSER

get a bar one not a single stone one. GENTLY feed the dresser ,holding square on the rest so that it just brushes the wheel until the re is no vibration. Do check ,as previously mentioned, that the centre has the spacer fitted'properly and the cardboard washers are fitted each side of the wheel.

Good luck Maurice

Thread: Silver soldering, I still don't get it.
15/07/2013 11:31:22

Hi Bill again, See(Workshop Practice Series No 9.

ISBN 0 85242 845 6 NEXUS Secial Interests. Also ( MODEL ENGINEERS handbook). by

TUBAL CAIN .A mine of information ,It s not let me down yet

Maurice.

15/07/2013 11:04:44

HI Bill are you using the right silver solder? these are the melting points of jewellery grade silver solder

ie for assaying.

EASY 705-723

MEDIUM 720-765

HARD 745-778

All of these can be used on brass ,copper ,and some iron, and steels .but are very expensive. There are others to be had called silver brazing rods,a lot less silver and cheaper. Ifyou have TUBAL CAIN hand book on page 6.3 there is a list of all grades of silver brazing alloys and their melting points As all previous posts very good advise ,in silver smithing ,big jobs ,bushy flame, small ie jump rings needle flame .Fluxes I have used are DIEWERSOL ,BORAX ,and fof silver ARGO-TECT(this stops fire stain)

Good luck Maurice

Thread: Turning tool ?
14/07/2013 15:53:40

Hi Gordon I would cut bar in half, fix in chuck and fixed steady turn down end. do likewise with other half .Centre drill each half and put in a pin to line it up .Weld or braze together Asyou said that it need not be accurate .Just a thought but I have no idea what you are going to use the bar for ,it may not work

good luck Maurice.

Thread: "salt bath" to soften metal
22/06/2013 15:48:01

Hi Re salt (sodium chloride) bath ,tried adding same to boiling water and it does raise temp, the amount I managed to get away with (some one elses salt) it raised the temp by 4c, not much but adding a kilo of sugar the temp rises much higher ,the temp of jam.I only managed about a table spoonful of salt in a pint of water.

Takes me back to Beery my chemistry master many eons ago.

Thread: "salt bath" to soften metal
19/06/2013 15:15:31

Hi all,Perspex sheet can be softend by adding sugar to water and heating .can get over 120c.

I have not tried salt but I think it would work. There is more even heat so you avoid bubbles.

I know this is not salt bath ,molten salt (sodium chloriide) melts at 801 c not nice!

03/06/2013 10:11:40

Hi , I have used pen kits from AXMINSTER TOOLS . every thing supplied but the holder, which can be made of anything .I know this is cheating ,but I am not clever enough to do what you are trying .

The kits are good ,I think they are from U.S.A. and use a standard roller type ink cartridge also a pencil version.

best wishes Maurice.

Hi Stuart I have used an inverted jig saw clamped upsidedown in the vice ,Abit dodgy but it works.

I extended the table by screwing a sheet of ply onto the foot of the saw. I dont think that I would go to 800mm
