Thread: XYZ1500 Belt Head Turret Mill

Hi,

Has anyone any experience with an XYZ1500 Belt Head Turret Mill, either good or bad!

Many thanks

Thread: Live centre bearing replacement
13/03/2023 15:25:11

I have been given this live centre, some thing I needed, but it has a problem with at least one bearing.

It has one large, loose, grub screw in the front centre with a plate/shaft end close to inside (5mm) and a small grub screw holding the plastic backplate.

If some one could tell me which bit to push or pull I would be very grateful.

Thread: 4140 - general discussion
01/08/2022 10:45:39

Jason, thank you for your explanation of stressproof - it makes perfect sense and explained why the grade of steel is never mentioned as it is clearly implied.

The 4140 discussion suggests to me that Australia uses the AISI system of steel grading (which is why I couldn't find an AUS one). The use of the term 4140 is therefore completely normal.

Thanks to all

As a far too avid watcher of certain YouTube channels the use of 4140 whenever a stronger, tougher material was required seems very common.

Even Kurtis of Banana fame is guilty.

I know there are exact UK and EU equivalents but no E number obviously.

EN19 has been suggested as an alternative but seems only available in a few sizes.

Another thing that confuses me (not difficult now) is "stressproof"

In spite of a lifetime of dealing with Boeing English (a checklist is a read and do thing, NOT a list to make sure things have been done etc. etc.) this one has me stumped.

Any thoughts you esteemed Gentlemen have will be of interest.

Thread: Over 70 Driving Licence Renewal
04/12/2021 15:41:01

Re. Brake lights - many moons ago one of my university professors told us, during a stress analysis tutorial I think, that when he designed gearboxes for RR, first gear was only stressed for full power for a matter of minutes - he went on to say that whilst manual gearbox selectors were designed for millions of selections, those for automatics were not and should be left in Drive as much as possible.

Many many moons have passed since then and it may well not be relevant now may well it still be taught?

Thread: Lathe run out
13/05/2021 12:58:46

Alignment bars from India - yes it does depend.

I took a chance and paid £80 for an MT5 one with Express delivery (Arrived in 5 days)!

There seemed to be several suppliers and I was lucky.

Mine measured OK and the results matched those done by a professional, with an ex Harrison works real thing, on my M300 the week before.

My only criticism would be the lack of proper centers in each end, but still worth the money I think.

Thread: Fiber change gears
17/07/2020 13:09:12

Sorry Gentlemen it,s the fiber gear I am more concerned about. It came from 600 group as it was an original gear but missing from my S/H machine.

For the price I expected a metal one....silly me! and then the lubrication advice in the manual would make sense and be followed.

Hi,

When I get it up and running I will have a change gear set on my Harrison M300 that will comprise a combination of metal, fiber and Delrin gears.

Do I lubricate the set, and if I do, what do you more experienced machinists suggest I use.

I seem to remember reading somewhere that nylon should not be lubricated, is Delrin the same?

Thread: Harrison M300 single phase from new
26/05/2020 21:42:25

Thanks Gentlemen, very quick replys.

I did originally think it was a one off until I read the post by Tony on lathes UK fully, then realised it was, maybe, a desire by Harisson to make a lathe that could be plugged straight in to a normal (in the old days) 15A spur.

My question should have been phrased more towards the headstock than the power supplying it. I have done three VFD conversions so am happy with that it is more "are all M300 headstocks created equal".

Was it reasonable to assume that it would make no sense for them to build a more fragile gearbox for a limited run 1ph machine. Can I safely double the power I put in. I guess the designers are no longer with us so we can only make an educated guess. The slower motor and a slightly smaller drive pulley would halve the input speed, and therefore spindle speed, without having to change anything in the headstock.

Clive, I will look into your drive suggestion with the "backgear", that maybe is all I need. I bought the M300 manual and noticed the 110v switching system that I could well do without. Give me a VFD control circuit with 24v @ 50ma any day.

Thanks again all,

Lee

Hi,

Has anyone had any experience with a single phase M300?

I am considering buying one that has had an easy life by the looks of things.

The motor is only 1.1kw, half the usual and the speeds halved as a result.

I am guessing the only difference is a slower motor (960 on the plate) and different belt pulleys, the headstock being standard.

A new motor and VFD should give me back the normal speeds.

Have I missed something ?

Thread: Snooker Que thread size
29/07/2015 10:29:11

I have been asked to make an extension to a friend's snooker que.

One end requires a standard UNC thread, the other, this one.

The que, at this point, is a little over 1" dia., the thread measures 0.362" OD, 12 TPI sort of matches. maybe 13!

ACME threads of 3/8" dia are 10 TPI seemingly (not that I have had anything to do with this type of thread).

Any ideas anyone?
