Thread: Re-organisation of website |

Possiblity of being in the wrong place but isn't it about time the posts are all standardised whereby they all fit the screen instead of having a vertical line of adverts in them, most of them appear to fit the screen but a lot are very wide and also losing part of the text means that I cant be bothered trying to read them. Thread: This website is working very slow today, Anyone else having problems? |
09/05/2012 22:57:47 |
Gentlemen Very bad with talktalk today but due to being in the wilds every time it rains down goes the speed and sometimes the connection disapears, copper wire and wet insulators a good conductor do not make, I remember when I had a crystal set, when it rained the signal got very weak, seems technology hasn't advanced as far as you think it has. stopped raining now so back to normal. ps not only me but my neihbours have the same problem. Thread: Online subscription renewal |
15/04/2012 11:00:46 |
David I know you are trying your best to keep this magazine going and I am sure that everybody appreciates this, but it would help (especially me) if you could make renewing subscriptions easier, I received my renewal form and as the phone lines are not open on sunday I proceeded onto the online option, after spending 10 minutes chasing around the Model Engineer site I noticed the subscriptions .co.uk address halfway down the page, this helped considerably until I was informed that this offer had expired, I then found the current source code tucked away like a naughty boy down in the right hand corner of the renewal sheet. Can I ask you to make it clearer on the renewal notice letter ( because that in effect is what it is ) the subscription renewal site address and the source code, the last time I renewed was over the phone and it took just 2 minutes and was easily done. Thread: One screw two directions, same time |

Gentlemen
I used to have a fixed spool fishing reel that had a reversible handle, you screwed in onto the reel on the left hand side turning it to the left, if you wanted it on the right hand side you tightened it by turning to the right, left was a LH thread and right was a RH thread, the screw thread on the handle was not biased to either thread, unfortunately I disposed of it a few years ago so no photos im afraid.

Thread: Machinable Ceramics |

Gentlemen
Having aquired a pulse jet I found that the insulator on the spark plug was badly chipped, the plug is composed of 5 pieces, 2 parts are the main body 1 ceramic insulator and a 2mm central condutor and screw on cap, being a model engineer doesn't mean I have loads of money but I have an enquiring mind (something my school teachers regarded as a nuisance in my day), anyway back in my early days as a TV engineer we used 10 watt wirewound resistors which have a ceramic body, I just happened to find one with a 2mm hole right through the middle, I made a 2mm mandrel to hold it place between the chuck and the rotating centre and turned down the outside to 4mm using a dremmel mounted on the topslde with a diamond grinding wheel going at slow speed and using the leadscrew and 5thou cuts, the reason I did it this way was because the last one I made got crushed in the chuck because it was so fragile at that size. I did think about alternative materials but as the body of a pulse jet gets a bit hot I thought ceramic should be ok, and yes I know pulse jets are banned but all I will do with this one is run it up for a few seconds for the hell of it and then flog it.
ps Diamond bit sets from Arc Euro Trade, indispensable in my book, no connection but a satisfied customer. |

I was talking about an incident that happened over 30 years ago, and I now do exactly as you do, you cant see or smell electricity but you can certainly feel it, that also goes for hydraulics and pneumatics, immense power stored in a small place ready to trap the unwary or stupid.

Gentlemen
All very interesting, Clockie, Your hands are precious, they are not hammers, if you want controlled impact use a soft headed hammer held close to the head ( the head of the hammer not yours ), most of all use common sense and think about your actions before carrying out any task says he after asking the lad in our shop to disconnect the power before I start work on the mains side of the board, BANG theres me all a tremble on the other side of the room and him laughing his head off, that is when I used my hand as a hammer, he assumed that just switching off at the socket was enough, he soon learnt that when I said disconnect I meant it. When you have finished with the centre rotating or not remove it from the taper and put it away, not only does it save it from damaging the point it also saves you getting stabbed.

Gentlemen
Many thanks to all concerned, ordered said book plus screwcutting in the lathe from amazon, probably need a new grinder now to go with the other two, (one is for rough grinding with a wire brush on the other end) plus the 4.5" and the 9" angle grinders not forgetting the very useful dremmel tool, just a thought , I will now have to make more shelf space or cupboards to put all my stuff away, just how many tools do I really need?
and before anybody says you only need the tools required for the job in hand I defy anybody to say they have all the tools they need, you can never have enough tools, that is what SWMBO has been told,( and she believes me).
Regards to all

Many thanks for that,I used to subscribe to MEW from the beginning but I found it bcoming typecast what with scale models of lathes and drilling machines etc, I seem to recall that when this site started there was something about subscribers of ME & MEW having unlimited access to the archives, I dont recall any mention of extra charges for this service. I dont suppose I am allowed to ask if somebody can email me the appropriate pages as dont have access to the archive.

Gentlemen
Does anybody out there have a simple way of touching up end mills and slot drills without the use of a dedicated machine, all i am looking for is an easily made jig that will allow me to bring the edge back, obviously if it is too far gone then a new one is the answer but I cant warrant the cost of a proper machine let alone the room taken up by it.

sorry to be a pain but actually MASH was based around the Korea conflict, superglue is brilliant for broken nails, you know the one that breaks just on the edge of the pain barrier and you catch it on everything, just cut it back a bit with sharp sidecutters and apply a small amount of glue to form a blob over the top, the medics do use a form of superglue that eventually dissolves in the body but i dont think its the same as the stuff we use, just had some work done to my shoulder so i shall be inspecting this site for the next four weeks aka Victor M just to keep you on your toes.

Thread: Steam engines |
29/01/2011 13:47:02 |
Gentlemen
concerning the link fromStick, it says it is a valveless steam engine but if you get a continuous flow of steam into the cylinder as per the link surely you need to admit steam at TDC only otherwise it wont work which means that you need some sort of valve system, sorry about the typing, i have one wing out of action at the moment. |

Please enlighten me, I dont dispute any statement regarding the working pressures stated for our friends gas tank but the aerosol and gaz canisters I have handled have been made tinplate or aluminium, neither canister capable of handling 300psi,is it me or am I missing something?

Gentlemen
Back in 1967-8 my colleague and I were driving along an A road near Radlett aerodrome in an austin morris J2 van on a summers day with the sliding doors open and not a seat belt in sight when this b----y loud noise deafened us, looking up we saw the underside of what we thought was a Vulcan Bomber and then the van was thrown in to the other carriageway by the exhaust, you couldn't see the runway as it had a big fence all around,
I also remember when we were erecting an aerial on a house close to Bovingdon aerodrome, we were both on the roof when we looked up to where a Spitfire was shooting down a Heinkel , this was when they were filming The Battle of Britian and if you want loud just stand within half a mile of an F111 as it takes off, saw this in north devon at an air show in 1989.
