Thread: Am I getting an irritable old git? |
09/07/2018 01:02:43 |
At one work place a youngster declared emphatically that anyone over 50 is an Old Git (house style?) The manager and I laughed and kept the joke to ourselves. 12 to 15 years later at another place I asked a colleauge age 40+ if he thought another emloyee was over 60. Pause," Certainly he's crabby enough to be over sixty" So by proxy I know what ........ John H |
Thread: Daisy wheel motion works by John Wilding |
27/01/2018 13:38:36 |
Thank you John. Mr Reynerd had the same problem; the answer seems to be keep filing. JH |
26/01/2018 06:33:52 |
In M.E's 4336/38/40/42 John Wilding describes a daisy wheel motion works as an alternative to the normal geared motion works. Even after making a new cam and filing the tops of the petals, the petals still stick on the pins of the pin wheel. Any guidance please on where I have gone wrong. JH

Thread: MEW 239 Boring Head FreePlan |
30/10/2017 12:31:08 |
Thank you to Robbo for the Link. Before posting I did do a seach for Boring Bars; in this case left off the the key word MICROMETER! In the Jon Gibbs posting, How do you open these photo bucket logos. Guidance on setting the carbide tipped boring bars (as in Set of Nine) would be welcome. Neil, what type boring bar areyou using? The thread i did pick up, Neil your quip " a boring subject made interesting", One contributor recommended using a slot drill as boring bar. Yes it works fast and the flute gives a smooth finish. There was also advice on the crbide tipped cutter but I couldnt follow it on first reading. John H. |

Has any body else made this Boring Head? And did they succeed in fitting the lead screw assembly into the slide and body? Chinese Puzzle? I failed the test. My solution was to rework the Leadscrew Nut. remove the the M5 stud and in that position drill and tap M4. The M6 hole is made without the need for orientation. The nut screw and support are assembled and dropped into the slot. With the dovetails engaged the body will then slide over the the slider. An M4 cap head screw is dropped through the hole ( intended for the M5 stud on the leadscrew nut) and screwed into the top of the Nut. John H |
Thread: ME Magazine 2nd Sept 2016 no. 4542 |
02/12/2016 14:08:51 |
As an overseas subscriber I accept delays but like Mike Malleson I have not received Issue 4542 Nor have I received issue 4543. Issue 4544 arrived the first week of October. Since then no ME's. Add to which MEW 245 the last issue of MEW received . Before responding on the matter I checked out The Moderator's "see this thread" On an exchange of correspondence with me.secureorder.co.uk dated 19/11/2016 I did ask if there had been any distribution/postal problems. Answer a tactful silence but they did offer to send replacements for those missing! I will forward my email and reply to Editor. JH |
Thread: Possible new ideas for Model Engineers' Workshop |
07/09/2016 02:24:32 |
Suggestions for articles: Using Angle Grrinder, with cutting disc and grinding disc plus any other types. This suggestion comes from witnessing an accident (NB NOT IN THE UK) using a cutting disc ...caused by operator being UNaware of KICK BACK He received TWO gashes in the upper arm which happily did heal quickly. If the safety guard had been fitted it may have prevented the accident. One question; should the guard be repositioned for use by a left hander? Articles on tools such as the Dremel reviewing especial what each model has in way of chucks collets, arbors. followed by the range of accessories and their range of use. JH |
Thread: Condensation in workshops |
09/02/2011 16:04:32 |
Hi, the best route to preventing or removing condensation is good ventilation. As those of you fortunate to still have a bathroom with a window opening onto the outdoors will know that opening the window soon clears the condensation. The standard 4" fan is pretty ineffective; if using a fan, install a 6" or 9" fan and provide a matching size inlet on the opposite end of the workshop. If the workshop is heated only while working in it, then before quitting, it might be worth leaving the door open for a few minutes to flush out the warm humid air. Past experience taught me that insulating a suspended floor makes a really difference. On this occassion I had lined the roof and walls first with polythene to draught proof and then with polystyrene, followed by hardboard. It was only by covering the floor with polystyrene that the shed would hold the required temperature. For several years I stored woodworking tools in all plywood cupboard standing in a garage. Tte cupboard size 4ft high x 3ft x2ft required just one night light bulb of 8 or10watts, which would last all winter. The bulb stood on the floor of the cupboard. I started with 40 watt and then 25 watt bulbs which quickly burnt out. Regards, John Harding |

Thread: Recommend oil can for oiler ports (on lathe) |

Many thanks to Messrs Foster and Wilde for their advice.

Regret photo won't on my line. For a Harrison lathe I was advised to use a simple grease gun. One where the business end telescopes into the body.
Following the topic of lubrication for lathe and milling machine gear boxes, are there any suppliers of the correct grades of oil and grease available in 1litre and 4 or 5 litre containers?
