Thread: Digital Issues
26/08/2011 20:15:16

Interesting reading all this but... nobody really was bothered when I reported that the
Gorgon ship engine (two issues) in Model engineer was missing.

I can't remember exactly the reply from Dave Clark but I think it was along the lines
that they (?) didn't have the PDF.

So what am I paying for a digital subscription for?

Left me in a bad mood since, so glad for the excuse to rant.

Regards to all those who have the time, energy, to rant for most of us, who tend to
go in workshop and say 'ah well'. Nick.
Thread: The Cambridge Turning Trials

'Cambridge trials'. regards Nick
Thread: Digital Edition 2

David, thanks for information I suppose in the fullness of time.......

However can anybody sell or PDF ( if I am allowed), the article I'm looking

for? I can't tear any more hair out, cheers Nick M.

Still no copy of 4275 in archives, my observations and request still stand.

Regards, Nick

Nick, thanks for info, I'm afraid I got a tad annoyed! Nick M.
07/04/2011 18:38:16

Any chance of getting the issues 4274 and 4275 into the archives? I've tried ebay and

the Toolbox - but no avail, would buy issue 4275 9th June 2006 if anyone can help.

Regards, Nick.

I am planning to build the Gorgon Steam Ship Engine but ME 4275 appears

missing ! Yours, Nick
Thread: Classified advert problems - how to overcome.
01/03/2011 01:20:40

Belay the above info. If I only tick the right box ........!!! Yes it works! Thanks Nick.
01/03/2011 01:17:14

I am getting the same problems as John, is it only two of us? Running windows 7,
no other problems other than the adverts are printing on top of each other. Have tried the compatability dodge as above but no avail. cheers, Nick.
Thread: Lubricate or Not?
21/02/2011 00:14:51

Thanks for the replies. I've been in the workshop tonight and dry cutting really works.

I think I was getting confused with mild steel and I presume some lubrication (as you state) here is useful. Thanks, I've buried a prejudice. Nick

I am converting some old cast iron by hand. What is the recieved wisdom
on lubrication of hacksaw cuts? I was taught to use light oil. This seems to work fine - but most authorities suggest dry cutting to avoid a sliding of the hacksaw. Any thought? Regards, Nick.
Thread: Rimless wheels
19/08/2010 23:47:57

Iam,
Not sure about that, I remember the lecture was fairly technical, I kept the handout for years then .......

I also remember the TV program on the self steering bogies, was it tomorrows world I wonder? Somebody will know I'm sure, got me really wondering. Nick

HI Sam,
Years ago (about '69), I attended a lecture on the developement of the Advanced Passenger train. Some detail was spent of describing the the profile of the wheels without flanges, instead a conical section was profiled on the periphery.

This was the research into the cause of hunting at speed - pity we ditched it before developement was complete. Hope helps, Nick

Tomk, many thanks - what I was looking for,

Nick
28/07/2010 13:49:17

I am trying to find some information on the 2.5" steam locomotive society/association or similar.

I feel pretty sure I found a web site some time ago, any help very appreciated.

Thread: The use of adjustable reamers
13/07/2010 23:45:25

Gentlemen,

I am very grateful for your replies regarding reamers,it certainly has given me a lot of food for thought. As advised I will practice with very sharp tools and take it very slowly.

Thanks also for info about the time out.

Regard, NIck

Jason - sorry I didn't really ask the appropriate question. I wrote (twice) a nice long description of what I am doing - or hoping to! I keep getting timed out and loose all my hard well thought prose.

I will work my way out of that via word as there are a number of queries at the back of my mind.

Dusty, I think you  must be phsycic a number of my question answered, I have a set of metric reamers so now will use those.

I'm going to make a number of plain bearings is phosphor bronze. The reason I am going a reamer route is the bore of the bearing is only in the order of 1/4'' or so. The application is high speed approx 14000 revs scale woodworking planer/surfacer.

I will get this off and again thanks - lets hope it only posts once. I'm a good typist . . .but!

Regards, Nick.

I have recently, in retirement returned (so I thought) to model engineering. I have found two major problems 1) I don't know as much as I thought I did, & 2) As mentioned in this forum time and time again it takes a lot of money! I don't consider myself a newbie (whatever that is!), but a near rank beginner.

I have some small imperial adjustable reamers - how do I use them? Do I measure and then ream or ream to fit - this is how I replaced king pins years ago. I wondered if there are any publications that would be useful.

Any advice, tips or pointing in a right direction would be appreciated,

 regards, Nick.
