Thread: Chester Conquest lathe just gone 'pop' !
15/10/2012 13:01:38

The board can be bench tested radily using a 100watt light bulb connected to the A+ and A- connections. The field winding is just energised with rectified ac...

Connect your AC supply to the board via another 100 wat light bulb ( adds a degree of protection against blowing scr's and the like), connec the other 'load' to the A connections as above and add a pot to the P1,2, and 3 connections..Varying the pot should vary the intensity of the load bulb.....If you ned further help then pm me, I also do a repair service/exchange scheme for these boards...

Simon,

I also fly r/c models (I've also flown with and know Clive the prev poster)...

So what he said.....Brown paper covering with diluted pva...us modellers use it all the time.... A fellow flier we both know as Mac, swears by it and paints his with the small sample pots obtainable from the likes of B&Q....

I get my cutting fluid from Chronos..

Aidan,

I like many others have bought from Drives Direct. I spoke to Dave on the phone, found him very helpful and informative. The motor/vfd package he supplied does the job for me..( Chester 9*20 vfd conversion) I'm really pleased I went that route.
Thread: Disassembling of Minimill / X2-clone / XJ-12 Ballbearings
09/06/2010 12:49:01
Marcus,

I changed the bearing out on my X2 clone (Chester Conquest) when I moved over to a belt drive conversion...Taper rollers from a local bearing supplier (SKF brand).
I didnt bother with the smaller bearings as I didnt replace the countershaft.

My mill is much quieter post conversion.
23/04/2010 12:08:37
The first job I did on my minimill when the gears broke was to add a belt drive...

I also changed the bearings to taper rollers. Never looked back since doing the conversion.

BTW, the kit from LMS does not necessarily fit all the clones. I followed Jerry Rollet's conversion but had to make some changes to the dimensions...nothing too onerous.

Thread: Warco Mini Mill Drive Belt
14/02/2010 15:25:14
Posted by gary w on 04/02/2010 23:34:15:
After reading so much about the benefits of converting a mini mill to a belt drive, I ordered a kit from the Little Machine Shop.  I would just like to say that this kit will not fit straight onto the mill due to lots of differences between the Sieg model of mill.  Has anybody else come across this problem?.
Edited By gary willcox on 04/02/2010 23:39:16

I had my own feelings about the Sterling Steele belt drive conversion which is the one sold by LMS...Hence my chosing the Jerry Rollet plans....even then I had to make adjustments and 'turn on the fly 'to ensure the parts were going to fit my Chester Conquest mini mill which outwardly looks the same as the Warco offering...

I also opted to remove the lay shaft assembly and other unrequired bits..I also changed the bearings out for taper roller items all for the better.....

Most micros these days have bult in comparators that will do the job as well as or better than an LM393,
Neil

Sure, the 16F628A has a couple of compartors built in...but iunless you know how to use/disable them they are not much value to those that wield a turning tool...

Guys...Lets not get hung up on the why/wherefore etc of this project, just accept that someone has come forward with a worthwhile project....If electronics isnt your bag then dont criticise the OP for his offering..

For those that have experience, let's not criticise Les for his efforts to make life simple...

I too checked the website...Couldn't see any pic code so gave up..

Personally I'd have used an LM393 or similar comparator for the pre conditioning cct...As for the remeote read on a pc...Superfluous imho...

Clive,

Got your pm on RCMF and sent the info..

Cheers

John

BTW when you strip the gears out, go for the taper roller bearing conversion...Well worth money and I havent looked back..Machine is soooo much quieter...
20/01/2010 18:53:21
Peter,

What Clive is saying is that it's the third time he's broken the main gear in the mill head.....

Clive, apologies if I got it wrong...
19/01/2010 21:22:08
Hey Clive....its you...Fancy seeing you here

I made a belt drive conversion based on the Jerry Rollet design..I can email you the pdf or you can download it from the Minimill group on Yahoo..

Nice to hear from you...

regards
