Thread: Drawing Projections |
17/05/2013 11:58:42 |
Posted by hawkeyefxr on 17/05/2013 06:31:07:
When i was doing my apprieticship in the 60's i had a spell in the drawing office, i was told one was the American view the other English view, Which was what i can't remeber now. I think 3rd angle projection is american and mostly used. If you ever got a ist angle (english) drawing it became misleading and you had to read it with care to avoid misinterpretation. The comment "If in doubt ask" was often cynically restated " If in doubt don't ask" you got no help from nobody. Alan |
Thread: Geoff Sheppard - sad news |

Very sad to hear the news, I only had one short conversation with him at the ME exhibition but found him to be an enthusiastic inspiration with a generous spirit. He will be missed My sympathies with Gill and family. |

Good stuff Jason if you keep this up you could turn us engineers into poets who machine to reason and ryhme. Alan |
Thread: MEW 199 |
21/01/2013 12:44:09 |
The originals I sent to MEW were clear and defined pdf copies of the original drawings. I even suggested posting prints of the original drawings because there was a slight loss of presentation due to pdf conversion but that was not wanted. I have no idea how the MEW drawings are so washed out. Regards Alan Jackson |
Thread: An announcement from the Editor of Model Engineer. |

David, Tony,
"I believe David said he was continuing as Editor for MEW...it is ME that is changing editors..." Oops sorry Alan |
10/01/2013 10:47:25 |
Good Luck David and well done with MEW. I hope the new editor of MEW has a machine shop background like yourself. Regards Alan |

Happy Christmas to all of you, hope you have a nice warm workshop to enjoy it in. Alan |
Thread: Building my own lathe |
22/12/2012 12:23:03 |
Hi Siddley,
"The stepperhead isn't a lathe, it's a work of art I am not sure what you mean but I will take it as a compliment. I can assure you that it is a very useful machine tool, with all the capabilities of a similar sized lathe plus additional capabilities that are not available on a conventional lathe. Despite it's stylised appearance, which I am quite pleased with, it makes no sacrifices to achieve this versatility and is as rigid as a similar size lathe. You are welcome to come and try it if you want to see for yourself. Best Regards Alan |
Thread: Am I living in a different world ? |
15/11/2012 10:48:29 |
Richard Its not you living in a different world its the BBC tribe. You are forced to subscribe and the consequence of this is that they do not have to work hard like you because for them your money grows on their trees. Alan |
Thread: Chris Stevens' parting tool |
06/11/2012 10:20:04 |
I found that with my vertical parting tool it needed side clearance in the vertical plane as well as in the horizontal. With no clearance in the vertical small chips can get dragged and wedged in the decreasing side clearance between the vertical sides of the tool at the exit path of the tool and metal being parted. Once I made clearance in both directions it all worked well. http://www.model-engineer.co.uk/forums/postings.asp?th=67935 Regards Alan Edited By Alan Jackson on 06/11/2012 10:41:11 |
Thread: How Britain Worked |
31/10/2012 20:22:39 |
Hear Hear Michael, "Even the few programmes that do appear like Horizon episodes about cosmology , particle physics and fusion are presented against a background of crashing music by some drop out from a rock band wih a squeaky voice and in such a way that the average person would lose interest in a few minutes" These programmes seem to be nothing more than a launch pad for wannabee superstars who have managed to get in front of the camera and are not going to move away until the camera stops. As to content its at best glossed over as technical, nurdish, boring etc. Alan |
Thread: Drawings - which way up? |
22/10/2012 15:43:41 |
In the engineering world I worked in the drawing was always read from top to bottom and from right to left i.e.bottom of drawing at the bottom of the page or to the right. Perhaps the EEC has changed this in one of the committee findings. Regards Alan |
Thread: 5 speed toothed belt drives |
20/10/2012 22:28:59 |
Andyf I have replaced the plain bearing at the base of the pulley with a ball bearing but have not yet run it for any length of time at the top speed possible so I would not take my theoretical max speeds as a reliable basis for design it is just that it is possible but for how long? Regards Alan Edited By Alan Jackson on 20/10/2012 22:37:10 |

Andyf This is what I wrote in the Tom Senior group about pulley sizes. In use I have never changed the belt from the mid range
This is what I have made. I chose a max pulley size of 5" just for |

Clive. I had my workshop door open yesterday and a great big green dragonfly flew in to check the lighting etc. Managed to open the window turn off the lights and help him out, don't like spies checking out my bodging, probably even now having a laugh with the other dragonflies at what he was up to in there. Thread: IMPETUS METALMASTER COMBINATION MACHINE |
08/08/2012 10:06:56 |
Michael W & Michael G, I agree with what you say about a small error at a small radius being magnified at a larger radius that is why I have added a secondary column at a larger radius to say back up and ensure the alignment. Alan Edited By Alan Jackson on 08/08/2012 10:07:30 |
