Thread: soluble cutting fluid

I don't know if it's just me, but when I mix up a pint or two of the soluble oil you get from Chronos, I always give the neat stuff a sniff as it smells like a ripe dead whale....and I just have to remind myself how bad it is...

Yeh, I know, that's weird.

Mixed up is fine though, makes the garage smell like a proper workshop !

Fitting a Leak Troughline tuner chassis into a new case with a stereo decoder, new power supply, regulated heaters, extra choke for HT smoothing...etc etc...

Bit of a waste as sooner or later, FM radio's going to be pulled but it's giving me something to do !

Hi all.

Thanks for the tips - I'll probably not bother for the amount of use I'm going to give it !

Thanks.

Last time I did cast iron, I saved a large jam jar of the stuff... Dad was talking about making a wireless cohera ( that's not in the spell check ! )

I rather like the thought of making a firework by adding naughty ingredients but that's probably not a good idea. ...

What has struck me suddenly - is that 'we engineers' ( note italics that could and does mean anything...) have had endless problems getting these jigs to work - usually without much success.
And yet presumably they've been sold across the world in their millions by now for years. ....so what hope for those not so 'engineeringly savvy'....

Somebody, somewhere, with a bank full of money from making the wretched things must be laughing his head off as if ever a device was 'not fit for purpose', surely this was it !

Absolutely.

Made me click on the links, read Harold's and others MEW articles and stretched my brain cells a bit.

I'm happy it's done that, even if my jig remains on the shelf ( but open to reasonable offers. ...).

I've a 2hp on my Harrison l5a which is sort of student size and that's just fine.

The original was a twin speed 1.5 / 3 hp monster that I replaced with a new one and a home built vfd. Occasionally, on a nasty parting off dig in, the vfd overload will trip, otherwise it's fine even when taking prolonged heavy roughing cuts - the temperature controlled fan on the vfd heatsink has never come on

So basically I think 2hp would be just right !

Hi Nigel.

This is true - although I've switched to diamond wheels to try and keep the dust down...

It would possibly make a bit more sense to have another go at my 'universal' tool holder to take a partong off blade at the right angle.. or even a holder just for them.

Milling out a complete Dickson type is startingto look like overkill - esespecially if the grinding dust problem is added...

Thanks for the thoughts !

Thanks Nigel - useful stuff !

I like the idea of hardening a few en8 items I've made - do you think this is worth doing - not so much for bearing use but as a general hardening process for workshop tooling to make them a bit more durable ?

John Stevenson mentioned Tuftriding in a post a while back - it sounds a useful process !
I'm aware of it being used for crank shafts but has anyone got any practical pointers for 'our' use - such as suitable grade of steel, does it need further finishing for a bearing surface etc ?

Brief net searches (for me) have mostly resulted in crank shaft applications...

Thanks.

Alas, it's going to be a milling job. ..friend next door with a shaper moved house and unfortunately took said shaper with him !

Modern vacum motors appear to have plastic commutators - not mica ones - and it doesn't take much to carbonise them and burn them out....

I know !!

Hi Barry.

Cast iron it is then - as I have a lump already lying around..

Hi Jo.

I do have some' of the Union tool holder - the graduated base and collet holder for end mills - and made up a slightly oversized holder that will take lathe tools etc.

But it's slightly awkward for parting off tools - I can't clamp them with the direction of grinding along the front of the blade

So I thought a single tool post that bolts onto the graduated base would present the blade at the right angle - and take other tools already in hoders.

It will be a bit quicker too - a simple swap to put a better edge on a tool rather than having to remove it ftom it's tool holder.

I shall get dirty with the cast iron !

Thanks guys !

I'm thinking of making ip a single Dickson type tool post to go on a Union cutter grinder - it's mostly laziness so I can regrind tools without removing them from their holders !

Any reason why a chunk of cast iron wouldn't be ok instead of steel as per the original ?

Thanks.

I usually stick a shim ofscrap ally between the bolts and the tool to avoid marking it. And I think the bolts have the threads turned away slightly so if they do get mushroomed, they can still be unscrewed from the holder.

What's it like if you manually feed ? I'm not familiar with your lathe but my l5 has a rack and pinion drive on the saddle that can be used to take cuts - the trick is to always keep one hand on the hand wheel so it's always moving at a consent speed with no stoping.

If that's ok, then it's something to do with the feeds - and I'm still thinking a gear that's been bored off centre somewhere...

Chatter you can usually?hear - I once bored out a 3" diameter stainless bar and that rang like a bell - continuously !! I've generally found that chatter produces a finer pattern but that could be dependent on the lathe, tool geometry, speed etc etc so wouldn't guarantee it...

Thread: Precision diameters

Hi Neil.

I was but others might not be so it's worth a post !

If you use a magnifying loop and try to set the angle to 5.7 degrees, the ratio of cross slide feed to actual movement is pretty much exactly 10:1.

I remember the angle by thinking of Heinz bakedbeans -57 Varieties !!

It's definitely cyclic.

Could you not work out the frequency from the diameter, rpm and spacing of the pattern ?
If it's a multiple of 50hz, then I would have thought - like Bikepete - it was motor related.

Or... another idea.... a off centre cog somewhere in the feed gear train ?

Ringing you'd probably hear.

It's a bugger to cut !

I've found a thin metal cutting disc in the angle grinder best - but will need flushing out to remove any cutting debris
