Just for the record if you have the problem again try reversing the die in the holder maybe the die is stamped on the wrong side. i have had this problem with dies before.

What about The Best Of ME and MEW have you thought of selling them as digitised issues maybe could be done as a pilot scheme.

Thread: Current Issue?

On this subject of recieving issues that are late or for some other reason you have not seen it a time of issue is the "Classifieds Section" of the Magazine.

Dave Could you consider entering the For sale and Wants section of the magizines into this site on the day of issue.  This would give all the opportunity of making an offer at the same time. It could be that you put this in the subscribers section of this website.
Just an idea!!!

Thread: TurboCad v 6.5 version
28/08/2009 04:42:13
Barneyboy
I dont have the turbocad on this computer that i use just now do you have the manual that came with turbocad? It explains everything.
I think you want to set up a template by the sounds of it so  you can use it for all drawings open a blank drawing and set up your page, from memory if you go to the top of the page there is a pull down that lets to set grid, units etc. the layers are there also. then save it as master drawing setup or something like that.
I will have a better look tonight and come back to you on it. as i am a bit vague in my explanation.

Thread: BA Threads or Metric Threads?
16/07/2009 07:55:55
Jason
My Apologies On further research i see the tie up with the metric system.

Nick
BA threads are not metric based they are imperial in all dimensions and the thread form does not even match metric.
For the dimensions of the bolts the manufacturers of the fixings have reduced the dimensions accross the flats on the hex of the fixing and nut to make them look more dimensionally correct, I am not sure if they are reduced to scale to any particular model scale maybe they have taken an average of 3-1/2", 5",7-1/4" guage maybe some of the other readers can add to this.
To answer your query BA has had the cross flat dimension reduced by the model engineering fixing manufacturers and probibly match the ME dimensions or are close to the dimensions. So yes if you go to the normal hardwear store and by BA nuts and bolts then buy more from a Model Engineering supplier you will probibly find them different, but the dimensions from each model engineering supplier should be the same.

This might help you Colin has covered each thread form in detail

The model Engineer's handbook by Tubal Cain covers just about everything and may even have a table showing the dimensions of fixings used by ME

They might have been declared obsolute by BSI but in model engineering and other engineering activities they are still very much used.
I suppose it is up to the builder if he wants to aquire BA to build as per the original drawing then ok if he wants to convert to Metric or other then so be it also.

In experience any model engineer I have met who builds many models or is in the process all have most thread forms in their collection of tools. If someone is just going to do a one off then it would be highly unlikely that he would collect all forms.

Another point broached in and earlier post is what is available in model engineer supply stores. You will find that it is all BA nuts and bolts that have been scaled to suit the model engineer. i have not yet come across metric that has had the nuts for instance scaled. this does not mean you cant scale down your own and make them yourself if you want to go metric, but it is a lot of work if you have many sizes and numbers of fixings.

If you are trying to cut down on the amount of tools that you buy then why not find a local model engineering club and join it, you will find that they have usually got a full stock of taps & dies handed down from previous members and you can usually borrow from the club.

Thread: Rivets and Riveting
09/07/2009 04:50:07
This might be an intresting tip for those fitting a great number or even just a few rivits.

I seen an old friend of mine with a step wedge and in each step he had a number of holes to suit different diameter rivits. he selected the step that was closest to the material plus the 1.5 times the diameter of the rivit and pushed the rivit through.
Using a little cold chisel he could sheer the rivit at the correct length and all the rivits would be the same and the correct length for the job.
Hope this was of some help

Thread: New Subscription Freebies
09/07/2009 04:36:05
There are a number of Mag's that now publish the Mag. online, you download a reader onto your computer and they send the subscription on a monthly basis.

It is a good idea and it is of very good quality for both the picture quality and the readability aspect.
I think this sort of thing would be very good for overseas readers as it would cost them less and it would get them their monthly copy quickly.
I think the only downside might be the copying and printing of certain pages that you might want to copy or print for use in the workshop.
And I believe that their has to be some sort of protection for the publisher otherwise sales would drop and copies of the Mag. would be flooding the net with few subscribers.
There might also be some merit in a subscription annual system where you have access to a archive and the capability of downloading back copies lets say 1 or 2 years prior this is limited to so many copies depending on your annual subscription. i.e. you could pay a subscription annually that allows a download of 12 copies per year or multiples depending on the archive subscription you choose.
This would allow me to clear out my loft my wardrobes and cupboards and save a marriage.
What about for long term subscribers giving them access to download these best of editions now and again or wall charts that sort of thing?
Or what about your onsite partners getting involved by providing a code number to use when ordering tools etc. that entitles the long term subscription reader to inviting discounts.
Back to you Dave.
