Thread: Stuart 10V rebuild |
11/10/2022 11:43:50 |
In the bottom two photos, I have three issues to deal with. 1. The seatings for the Main bearings are hand filed and are oversize, in order to ensure that they are both in line I will probably machine out the seatings so they have square bottoms this will allow me to machine a suitable piece of brass as the main bearing journals. 2. The holes on the seating for the main bearings are not aligned, I will drill these out and plug. 3. On the left side there is a step on the engine standard seating also on measuring the height it has not been filed even giving varying heights, I will re-machine this soleplate just enough to clean it up around .5 mm(.015" Edited By Jim K on 11/10/2022 11:48:05 Edited By Jim K on 11/10/2022 11:48:32 |

Hi All, I acquired a old Stuart 10V and on inspecting it in preparation to run I realised this was not likely to happen due to the very poor workmanship. I hope to show you all the issues and what I done to rectify the faulty parts, I will welcome advice from you all during the rebuild. there will be decisions I will have to make in the early stages whether to work in imperial or metric although I think there will be a bit of a mix in the dimensioning to allow me to use available material. we will see how it goes. |

Hopper and Jason, Thanks for the links, on looking into what I have found up to now I think the best way to go is by purchasing the book as I believe there will be more information and any size errors should be noted in the book also it's cheaper lol. Now all I have to do is identify and purchase replacement material for the many duff parts, should be fun. I might keep a log of it all on here my errors in the rebuild might just save someone else.

Hi, I have inherited a Stuart 10V unfortunately it is in a bit of a sorry state due to badly made parts etc. I would like to refurbish this engine and remake a number of the parts correctly including the plugging of wrongly drilled holes. In order to proceed, I will require drawings of the parts so that I can know the correct dimensions. Does anyone know where I can source these plans, recommend a book or where I can aquire a scanned copy just something to give me all the correct dimensions? |

I am in Scotland but I had found Dragon saws from wales good and cheap they were HSS and were as I say very good I am curious in what you say about the teeth facing the wrong way being easy to rectify can you explain.
Chris Gabel
I have bought a vertical band saw for cutting wood so this is why I need new blades, So it is not the metal cutting horizontal one which are fine if set up properly they all have their good and bad points. I have one for sale if anyone is interested.
On your Evolution range those tools really impress me on the videos but I would like to try them myself I don't know how they would do on solid bar I will go search youtube now to see if they are doing that.

Thread: Template Paper/card |

Hi
I have a friend who is a carpet fitter i will have a word with him, I never knew they used such a thing but it all sounds logical that it should to cut the ply etc.
What had been in my mind was when I was an apprentice in the training school we used an orange template paper in the plating shop for drawing out developments etc. I am sure the stuff the carpet fiters are using is very similar.
Thanks

Yes i have thought about craft shops and picture framers but i thought the card would have beed too thick and expensive as it is for decorative purposes.

I agree Jeff the stone must be in god shape and the way you describe sounds to me like easy WITH PRACTICE.
When i originally heard the story i was thinking that the fute is rested on something and although i said freehand i wonder did he have something to give him a guide to certain angles. You know how these lads used things to make a job easier. like for example the thickness of a sixpence to give a certain height.

I have heard that it is possible to sharpen small drills on a grinder freehand, it was told to me by a friend who doesnt remember how he was told to do it. (by an old toolmaker)
What he remembers is that it was a very logical and simple way with no jigs or fancy set up.
Just wondering if anyone know of this technique. |

I am sure there are owners here who have fitted this conversion to an under drive lathe,
I am thinking of adding this modification to my lathe or simlar so please recommend other options. My question is when fitting the conversion do you fit the motor in the original position and use the same pulley drive system, or do you rip it all out and modify to have a more direct drive.

I have often wondered about these and also for using it in my Boxford. What i was wondering is, do you still use the pulleys for the different ranges of speeds or do you configure the pulley system so that you have a sort of direct drive?
Has anyone ever done it to a boxford.?

Metal Supermarket
Yes i insist with them to give me a quote first but and i dont hesitate to question it if i think it high, I understand that they are a franchise and they use a main database to get the prices so they should be sold on weight or size. Speak to the owner also they usually have a bin of offcuts.

Hi,
If you are buying small or large amounts of metal almost any shape try www.metalsupermarkets.com they are in most cities and large towns in the UK they cut to your size from their stock. So you can give them a list of materials and get a quote then order when you pick up all the bits are there cut to size this includes sheet metal.
A lot cheaper than B&Q
