Thread: Myford chuck 'oiling point'
24/01/2018 20:52:22

Have just come across a 'lost' Myford branded 4" three jaw chuck (Toolmex made in Poland) which I had totally forgotten about. There is what would appear to be an oiling point - recess with ball in centre on the front face. Am I correct and if so what grade/ type of oil should be used?

Any one able to give a price guide as, after doing without I probably do not need it. It is complete with key, seem to have had little use and is undamaged save for some very light surface rust acquired in 'storage'. The jaws move smoothly.

Thread: Advice on rotary burrs for cast iron use.

Many thanks to those who offered advice especially Ian who would appear to ‘speak’ with practical experience including when things did not go according to expectations. All are very much appreciated.

I intend to open the ports of a BSA Bantam cast iron cylinder for a parade racer. Have got a die grinder but would like, in addition to general advice guidance on stem diameter, length, head profile of suitable rotary burrs ? Also possible suppliers of half decent burrs.

Any and all advice would be appreciated. Should add that I have a spec for port size/shapes.

Someone ducking the question, then?

Hi Brian

The ref to duck boards was made in humour - as you probably realised. As ducks enjoy water, how/where did the term come from? Another of the great unknowns! Like what I did last week.

Thread: George Punter of Queensland

Thanks to all posters. George would seem to be not only a wonderful model engineer but also a very nice chap. Ah, then again, he is a motorcyclist!

Thread: Safety matting - today's Screwfix offer.
18/01/2018 10:12:21

The Screwfix special today is ‘extra thick heavy duty work station matting 1500 x 900 @ £29-99 a discount of £10—00’.

Rereading the blurb,

'Holes allow drainage of spilt liquid or debis leaving a dry, safe top surface'.

should these mats be placed on duck boards to allow for drainage?

Thread: George Punter of Queensland
16/01/2018 15:23:27

Looking through a Dec 1991 copy of Classic & Motorcycle Mechanics I came across a piece by George Punter on his restoration of a 1957 Lilac 250cc V twin. In the text he mentions that model engineering was his other hobby and I was wondering if he is still enjoying the wee bike? His address was given as Avenell Street, Bundabert, Queensland 4670.

Can't locate the last thread on this theme so have started another.

Wife to husband '... and the doctor said children are exposed to many harmful things while watching TV, but welding flash burns were a new one on him..."

Thread: Toolstation -all orders ov £10 inc free p&p
21/12/2017 09:42:17

Received great service from Toolstation. Living in N Ireland we, like many others in far flung parts of the UK usually have to pay extra despite the business offering ‘free deliver in UK’. With Toolstation any order over £10 is delivered free. Recently got a loft ladder, reduced from £80 to £50 and it came free p&p– and on the day expected as well.

Thread: Drawing board v CAD
11/12/2017 10:47:45

These in our hobby who still used drawing boards are in good company. In his autobiography, ‘How to Build a Racing Car’ Adrian Newey the F1 designer writes ‘I’ve stuck with my drawing board. Call me a dinosaur, but I think of it as my first language; for me it represents a state of continuity and I like continuity; it’s something I strive for. If I were to convert to CAD I’d have to learn something new, and not only is there a penalty to doing that, but there’s the question of whether I’d be as fluent in my new language as I was in my old.

Besides, what I value about the drawing board is that you can have everything at scale in front of you, whereas on a CAD system you’re limited by the size of the monitor. I also like the fact that I can sketch freeform and change it quickly.’

He, of course, has a team which converts his drawings into CAD for factory use.

I am not much of a reader but this book is so enjoyable to read. I feel that I am in a comfortable chair listening to AN reminiscing about his life. To me! I am almost waiting for him to say ‘now where was I, ah yes, next I ……..’ Add it to your Christmas list if you have any interest in the racing scene.
