Thread: Workshop thermal gloves- advice please
27/02/2017 19:13:47

Update. Thought I would start with the simplest idea which was Dwayne's suggestion of chemical finger warmer type product.

Was in £land this morning and bought a 'penetrating heat action patch for back and shoulders'. When home secured one on my left wrist using insulating tape. Being r/h I choose the left as it would be getting little exercise to allow it to stay warm.

Cool but sunny afternoon so into the garden to carry out research. Half an hour later the l/h fingers were much happier than before and the veins on the back of the hand were quite noticeable compared with those of the r/h. With larger veins, greater blood flow, so warmer fingers. After two hours when I came indoors, the left fingers still had minimal discomfort while the right were distinctly unhappy.

So many thanks to all 'advisers' and especial Dwayne for his simple, practical input. I will now think of a IR heater, perhaps on a mobile stand, so where I go, it goes.

Many thanks for all suggestions. Should have added that my request was for bench work only. Some 55 years ago my m/w teacher may sure his instructions would not be ignored a second time re clothing and things that revolve.

I recently visited my GP who, after seeing my collect of 'finger chilblains,' decided my problem was caused by "a lifetime of smoking resulting in narrowing and damaged of the arteries". After I said I was a non-smoker he recommended in cold weather I should stay in a warm environment and wear good quality clothing!

I have tried all kinds of industrial gloves, ones which keep me warm are too thick for practical work. Despite being well wrapped up down to the wrist, with fingerless ones the fingers start turning grey and are numb within 5 minutes. The nitrile ones much the same.

So warm environment it will have to be. Perhaps a move to some sunny land - following a lotto win.

Can anyone recommend lightweight thermal gloves suitable for workshop use. I suffer from poor circulation and, when the temperature is less that 15C my fingers go numb. The obvious solution is heating. I have tried pig house bulbs, radiant heaters, fan heaters all with little success as the workshop is part of a single brick garage. It is also too small to divide into two units

Cheating is so much easier than the time consuming practice of accepting nothing without three different sources which can be independently verified.

Here in Ireland we suffer from a great lack of such information with the destruction of much of the birth, death and marriage and other records in the early 1920s.

Spent the past hour working on the family tree and now realise how similar it is to our hobby. Where a 'component' does not fit, it would be very tempting to tweak it until it does. Wonder how often it happens? Especially when you share a name with a famous person.

Among the Q & As is:

I have just bought this drill and the dimensions are:

290mm wide including the 3-bar plunger (320mm including the table crank handle)
995mm high
610mm deep (front to back)

The throat depth is 165mm (not 80mm as shown)

Don't accept all Screwfix specifications as being accurate. Item 1428G, pair of water pump pliers, weigh in at 375kg. Could some 'reader' please check if I should go to that well known provider of reading glasses.

Why bother with a boating pond when you have a harbour.

Anyone experience of the Titan 700w pillar drill on sale at Screwfix for just short of £170? My use would be strictly DIY. The 16 speeds range of 210/3040 makes it tempting along with the 2 year warrantee. Item no 17463

We (in that oasis of peace and good will called Northern Ireland) pay annual rates. Our bill is about £1200 a year for which we get 3 bins (household waste, paper and food/garden waste collected every 2 weeks. Access to the 'tip' is free and the council will collect up to 6 (?) items from the gate for around £15. In addition library services, water etc are said to be included in the rates bill.

Near to our dump is a scrapyard outside which a sign had recently been erected which reads 'we apologise but due to a change in regulations we can no longer sell scrap to the public.' However they can still sell parts from scrap cars!

02/02/2017 20:05:31

Having been told yet again by the Council that 'we' must increase the amount of food waste and green matter collected as, instead of going to land fill, all road side collections are converted into high quality organic compost certified to BSI PAS 100, I decided to check what this illustrious standard is.

'Compliance with BSI PAS 100 or another equivalent quality standard accepted by the Council shall be independently verified on an annual basis by a suitably qualified third party organisation.' Seems another of those wonder systems where, when the paperwork is correct one day a year, everything is an outstanding success.

With no certainty of its contents or whether the composting process was correctly carried out on the other 364 days, I don't think I will be rushing to buy it at my local garden centre just yet.

Any other views?

Hi Clogs

Many thanks for your thoughts - very interesting to say the least and a great guide to those who are thinking of taking up the 'art'. Sadly me hands are past using much more delicate tasks than a hammer!

Allan, remember the old saying ' a teacher never retires early - it is always too late'. Wonder why?

13/01/2017 20:37:55

Back to the mm v cm discussion. Called into a Polish dressmaker to get trouser's legs shortened by 5 and a half cm. "Sorry" she replied reaching for her tape. "could you show me?" I pointed at 5.5 CM and she replied " you mean 2 1/4 inches."

I think I will give up trying to make life easier for other folk!

Thread: Electronic mouse trap
08/01/2017 20:52:46

Hi Folks

Our daughter lives in an old tenement building and has mouse problems for over a year with little success at catching or killing the beasties. The 'mouse man' (professional pest expert) said that rodents are wise to almost all traditional design and form of traps, sticky sheets and poison as she has found out. I am thinking of a diy trap design on which the bait is hung from a hook positioned above a copper strip, the mouse acting as the switch by completing a circuit when it grabs the bait.

Any ideas about the requirements would be appreciated.
