Thread: What did you do today? (2014)

Well my first day of retirement has produced a 2 cavity lead head sea fishing lure mould, approx 2.5 oz

A bit rough in comparison to what i have seen above but I am pleased with it.

Tomorrow I will make a 1.5 oz then i just need to cast some ready for the good weather.

If he is into RC he will know of the RCME magazine. Alex Whittaker designed and severl people have successfully make his " Firefly " 2 stroke glow.

Do a search on their site and you will find out more. I think there was also a thread on here.

Plans are available as are metal kits although as you are in OZ you would probably be better off sourcing the stock material locally.

The design is all from bar stock etc there are NO castings. Its a nice looking thing and as the component count is about 30 there will be some easy bits to start with first.

I bought 2 stock kits and just need the time to no build them, after I strip fettle and re tram the milling machine

Thread: Compression Ratios
07/05/2013 20:52:38

I hve just remembered that you need to pick the glow plug carfully as well as they have differnt temperature ratings Hot plugs for engines that run cool and cool plugs for engines that run hot.

They can also alter the comression ratio slightly ie. if you fit a longer reach fourstroke plug it will up the ratio slightly. and yes they work perfectly ok in 2 strokes

Good starting point for plugs is an OS no 8 ( 2 stroke ) or OS F ( four stroke )

A good idea might be to find a local flier who has several different types you can try out before you shell out a £5 per plug of your own.

I think you will find that glows are at least 8:1 and very often nearer 12:1

I 5% nitro is a good sport fuel The GX you mention is 100% castor . Many model fliers avoid this now due to the patina that builds up on the engine VERY quickly and the glaze that can bild up inside the engine.

There are now good synthetic oil fuels available that give a cleaner burn and residue and yet still smell good.

Model Technics Formula Irinve is on such at 5% nitro, 16 % synthetic , 2 % castor.

Thats what i will go back to once i finish the last 3 gallons of home brew I made from some free methanol.

Thread: Small cast iron bar supplier?

The Burgess will do it but it will need to be VERY slow feed.

You nee to true up your blade guides and have a close fit to mimimise the inevitble wandering at this depth of cut.

For me it would have to be a Bimetallic blade 30 -42 tpi.

Thread: Arbor press base plate dimensions
04/04/2013 21:20:09

Neil it wasnt armour plate but it was remarkably flat for cold rolled.

Only had to take 0.3 mm per side to clean it up. And most of that was cos the first time i didn't get the feed right and had a rough finish in the centre third.

Any way it's done. pin in and mounted on the press and a nice chunk left over for something else?

Now I just need to strip out the MDS 48 and pull its bearings.

Thnaks guys. When I went to get the bar for the real job they had an offcut of 160 x 300 by 20 and they just gave it to me.

Excellent. Chop in half and turn up in the big lathe at work and it job done.

As it says. I aquired a 3 ton arbor press but the base plate is missing.

I just need the dimension so i can make one. I have looked online but they dont appear to be an after sale item where i have looked.

I suspect it is 180 mm dia and 20 mm thick can any one confirm that and also tell me the width and length of each of the slots.

And above all else some form of dust protection by way of face mask AND extraction.

A lot of wood dusts both hard and soft can cause respiratory reactions and problems.

Often long after the original exposure.

Balsa, mahogany and to a lesser extent Cedar are now problems for me in close proximity.

Charnwood have a good range of equipment worth looking at.

Thread: Arbor Presses.
11/01/2013 20:21:45

to get any real pain on the object in question they need to be very firmly bolted down to a VERY rigid and strong bench / location.

They only have a 2' lever arm which, IMHO , can not deliver the presses stated max even with my 16 st hanging on the end. to get punch type pressures you need to extend that with bar or pipe to 4' ish.

If you have space and can find one as Martin says a fly press is better. They require much less effort to use.

Although heavy and needing a solid bench they are self contained and there is a lot less leverage being applied in the direction to try and tip it over or off the bench.

The pressure is infinitely variable by a) how hard you swing it and b0 how many and how heavy are the balls you add to the arms.

If you are only doing light stuff like pressing bearings out of shells or 200 mm thin sheet bending then an arbour press is the cheaper more compact route.

I hope that helps you make a decision as to what you go for.

As David says just cross out the leading "5" on each of the dimensions in the centre drawing only and all is OK.

I did mine last night and was just going to post now but you beat me to it.

Try this at Charnwood

W680 High Filtration Vacuum Extractor

It is a lot more at £119 but it has a 4" hose that you can throttle down to 2" with one of their adapters.

BIG capacity approx 450 dia by 600 high very good suck and easy to open and empty.

I am very please with mine. Nylon string balls, long turned springs, wood turning shavings Whoosh gone!

I'm with Steve not top dollar for a just in case but I would say 300 mm min purchase to make it worth the companies while to put the cost into selling it, i.e packing , invoicing etc.

£10 per 300mm plus carriage, say £5 would seem to be about right.

They make more than scrap price we pay less than by the inch.

Win win

Thread: Kiln - should I buy it?

Of course there was an article within the last 12 months to make a gas furnace froma 25 lt can and kitty litter and fire cement. That was a top loader so it is obviously workable with care.

You nee another project to make bent tongs ot T shapped ones with a curved gripper and lip on the pot.

I did hear the stainless steel tea pots etc from the sale rooms make good crucibles.
