Thread: Meet Up at Doncaster!
21/05/2016 19:54:20

Meet up at Doncaster - sadly I don't think so - that's a round trip of over 500 miles for me and, nice though it might be, that's just too far.

Hope those of you who do make it have a great time, struggle home with loads of tools and castings, manage to sneak these past the wife un-noticed and make a start on them before the next show. It is some years since I last went to a show and I still have several unfinished projects!

ps I note that the guy in the photo above the Rob Roy has the same haircut ( and jumper ) as me!

Thread: Boxford as a wood lathe?
19/05/2016 19:34:02

For my money I would spend a bit of time " renovating" the wood lathe - that you have a metal lathe should help that process. I guess you will be using hand tools to shape the pen bodies and that process is surely just like wood turning.

Having said that however I too have looked at a bit of pen making - and I passed my wood lathe on to my son in law some years ago!

If I do proceed I will then be in the position of HAVING to use my metal lathe..........so let us know how you get on!

He Replied " I know it's a beaut isn't it" several of the visiting party were laughing fit to bust for a long time afterwards and the young doctor went away very red faced."

I trust the she added a strong laxative to his daily medication!

Oh dear Michael - you too eh?

I'm always looking for this sort of thing - hard as I try to break myself of the habit! ( Car number plates are also another useless diversion - combinations of letters suggest words/ phrases etc. My dearest also takes part - we are a sad pair - but I guess it's harmless!)

Thread: Brough superior
12/05/2016 17:57:11

I'm very pleased to see this replica of a Brough Superior. I remember my Dad enthusing over such a machine -although he never had a motor bike of any description. ( Were he still alive he would now be 116 ) so Dad - now I know what you were banging on about - and I fully agree with you!

Very strange approach fizzy - so you set yourself a "trap" to remind you to be safe.........

Would it not work just as well to make a big notice saying "CHECK SETUP" and hang it on the machine?

Norman

Thanks Nick - I think I am probably past "seasoned" ( lets just say "matured" ! ) but, despite frequent visits to Tony's site, I'd not come across those pages before. I think they deserve a bookmark of their own - so I've added one!

Norman

P.S. I see that he says that " hair should be tied up" - I wish that I needed ( or, indeed, was able) to comply with this!

"I'm sure Aston Down used to launch by car and reverse pulley, but having just looked at their website they now use conventional winches."

Quite right Andrew they did - I had such a launch on a visit there many years ago. It was all a little sedate as I recall - but then I was used to winch launches of the " sat there at one moment then, at the next, flat on your back going straight up!" variety.

That looks very smart Mark.

I agree with the QCTP Buy the post and a few holders to get you going and add others as you go along - it's only " Quick Change" if you have lots of holders!

"I tend to agree with that. I find subtle introductory comments like - "this is my first wife"- is enough to keep them on their toes "

It is this sort of attitude that puts a strain on the NHS and costs all of us money.

I don't know if you've come across this but Tony at (http://www.lathes.co.uk) is asking anyone who has one of these machines to contact him. I understand that he is a bit short of info. on this make and is anxious to fill in any gaps!

The first is a shot of Tarr Steps and, I believe, Amelia. Shock horror how did he know that!???

Well ( apart from knowing the location quite well) when I hover my mouse over the images a title appears!

Now what is the prize?

Well Martin

" Norman, we too have had visits from Jackdaws over the last couple of weeks which we haven't seen before."

Interesting - we are in Mid Devon - which is not too far from you - and I certainly hadn't seen Jackdaws before. Seems they are spreading!

I have been watching a pair of Jackdaws nest building in my neighbours barn - they don't seem very good at it! They have been selecting twigs which are far too large for the opening and they then fiddle around trying, for some time, to get them in. Finally they discard the twig and go off to find another unsuitable example!

Just noticed today quite a number of Goldfinches in the garden - regular visitors and welcome colour after the drabness of winter.

New this year though we have a lot of Jackdaws about - I don't remember ever seeing one before. Has anyone else seen any?

Russell

That is beautiful work throughout - something to look at everyday and get pleasure from.

BUT....."the case is now ready for varnishing:"

Please don't VARNISH it! Instead take the time to apply successive coats of button polish, with a rubber, to build up that lovely deep, smooth, shine.

I can imagine many restful hours in the company of your clock as it plays you its peaceful and comforting song!

......of course what are you going to do with your spare time now ? frown

Dave I suspect that is why you were given it ! I have one and have used it once or twice on my pillar drill when a series of holes are needed .... but only because there was work set up in the vertical mill. If you do manage to fettle it to good health let us know how it goes.
