Thread: Hints and tips
12/11/2009 15:30:38
Mr Stephens et al, your notion of a hints and tips thread is most laudable.  Your wish to promulgate your expertise should be welcomed by most especially by beginners like myself.

I don't wish to detract from your 'fire-power' but I have recently discovered the articles by Geometer and Artificer in the digital archive and thoroughly recommend them.

David C: I would have thought that publication of the Geometer series in book form would be a worthwhile exercise.

Meanwhile tipsters, if you have a moment or two, please address the following related queries:
(a) I have a second-hand Griptru chuck and despite having the original instructions I'm finding it difficult to adjust so that material runs truly;

(b) I have similar problems in adjusting a 4-jaw to hold round work truly; and

(c) in Tubal Cain's book Building the Overcrank Engine Georgina the following advice appears  regarding chucking a flywheel (p.19), "Set up in the 4-jaw gripping by the inside and adjust till true in the usual way with chalk and patience".

Please excuse me if the answers to my queries appear in the very archival information that I am recommending  -  I haven't read all of them by any manner of means just yet.

Any elucidation would be most welcome.  Thank you.

Thread: Digital inexing

J.Malcolm Wild on page 65 of his book Wheel and Pinion Cutting in Horology says: "Finally we come to the ultimate in dividing in the lathe."  He goes on to show how these(1) products may be attached to the rear of the lathe mandrel using, I presume, a component similar to the one to be found in his kit for attaching a traditional Myford dividing head in the same position and shown here(2a).

There is a British equivalent  shown here(3)  making use of a Vertex rotary table.  Similarly I guess these(4) tables might also be suitable.

My questions are (a) whether all rotary tables have a hole all the way through their centre so that they may be attached to the mandrel and (b) whether any horologist has experience of using such a set up?

Thank you.

I don't doubt that this is not the right forum for responding to your last sentence V8Eng but, yes; Tim Andrews and Ashraf Hanna to name but two more.
I think in the early days of this forum there was a thread which asked members to state whether they had any other interests, at least you and I know what one of ours is!!

Enquire also from these people about a kilo or two of ceramic chips but I suspect that  insulation blanket would do just as well.  Pursuing V8Eng's post I've seen temporary pottery kilns made largely from blanket (& an angle iron frame) at ceramist fairs.

Look out for a four part article by Mike Haughton entitled Insert Tools.  I suspect I saw it in one of the MEW issues in the digital archives of this forum.  I further suspect that it will answer your queries.  Regrettably I can't exactly remember in which issues it appeared.

With regard to wheel crossing, you might want to stretch the budget a good deal by purchasing the very comprehensive hard-back book authored by J. Malcolm Wild himself entitled Wheel and Pinion Cutting in Horology (ISBN 1-86126-245-0)

Yes of course, it is a lot more expensive than a couple of back issues but then it contains far more information.

Thread: Brass and Paint
20/10/2009 17:35:27
The following advice is to be found at:

Brass, copper, aluminium and nickel silver, in fact all non-ferrous metals should be etch primed before applying any subsequent coats of paint. These metals have an oxide layer which paints do not adhere to very well. Even if abraded with abrasive paper, the oxide layer reforms within 2 or 3 seconds!! Etch Primer has an acid in it to microscopically eat through the oxide layer and into the metal thus providing a key for the paint.

The home page of MyHobbyStore has a special offer for the Workshop Practice Series in the top left, namely, Buy 3 get 2 FREE!  How can I take advantage of this special offer?  There seems to be no difficulty in availing oneself of the buy 2 get 1 FREE offer.

Ian S C,
You seem to be managing well enough without PTFE String but in case you would like further information it is a Loctite product.  Loctite is, in turn, owned by Henkel (Dusseldorf, Germany) but they have an Asia-Pacific arm.  Henkel N.Z. Ltd, East Tamaki, 2 Allens Rd, Auckland.
Screwfix is a British company which until a couple of years ago was mail-order only:
with very competitive pricing.
Usual disclaimer.

PTFE string: surely, you must mean: Screwfix product no. 42142 Pipe Seal Cord, £2.93/50metres

You might find a reading of Mr Willson's account of his M300 in the latest MEW beneficial.  It appears that he custom makes a cradle to fit under each of his heavy machines to which can be attached wheels for single-handed movement.
His machines sit on the cradles which in turn sit on adjustable anti-vibration pads supplied by: farrat.com although I'm unclear about this last point.
