Thread: Draft Site change of status and program down load not working
17/11/2020 11:13:29

I've been using draft site free 2D CAD for quite a number of years for those of you who follow my articles in ME and ME Workshop will be familiar with my drawings which were all done using draft site.

Draft Site caught up with me when my free licence expired No Problem I thought I'll just have to part with some cash for the basic licence at £100/year including fat its not as expensive as other drawing packages and I'm familiar with it.

Not wanting to part with my cash too soon I decided to try the 30day free trial down loaded the program fine, loaded one of my drawings up to try it out and non of the drawing features would work I didn't even have a cross hair cursor

After messing about for I bit I registered for the online chat room this didn't work either it wouldn't recognise my user name or password I tried resetting my password but I've had nothing back from them.

I deleted the programme and tried reloading it but this time I've got nothing.

I've contacted the help desk but so far nothing.

I'm afraid I'm quickly loosing confidence in the system

As any one else had similar problems

The best and most accurate way to produce the formers is with an end mill of the desired size. Mount the former in a spin indexer or other similar device on the Mill and with the end mill of the requires size simple advance the end mill into the former and at the same time slowly rotate the indexer keep advancing the end mill until you've got the required depth you'll end up with a perfect radius of the correct size in the former. No messing about grinding forming tools

Thread: Vertical Injectors from America
19/09/2020 17:40:47

Along with a friend we've been experimenting with vertical injectors with mixed success, we can get them to work but the problem is they are a bit bulky we want to get to a neater design..

There is a company in America that markets vertical injectors called eccentric engineering this is a different company than the UK company of the same name. From a sectioned photograph of one of these injectors you can see that they have sliding washer around the combination cone that closes when the vacuum starts. Full size injector use a similar system

My question is has anyone got any experience of using these injectors on 5" or 71/4" G locomotives in the UK

Thanks for the tip Eric readers sourcing a fly wheel was worrying my. Did you build the Grasshopper I know you’ve built the other engines.

Cheers

A big thanks to the editorial team for publishing my grasshopper article.

Anyone following the article and are interested in building the model will know that it uses a Laser Cut fly wheel. I've been in contact with the company that supplied my wheel "Laser Master" to warn them that they may have some enquiries for the fly wheel and they are more than willing to supply them they can be contacted at [email protected]

I don't have any commercial arrangements with them just a happy customer.

Just to remind you her's my video of the engine.

Hi Philip

As Jason said the Grasshopper plans are currently being published in the magazine I hope you enjoy the build and the article.

If any one is having problems sourcing the laser cut fly wheel I can give them details where I got mine from I don't have any commercial agreement with my supplier just a very satisfied customer.

Stew

PS  I've just emailed the company who made the fly wheel for me to say that they may have some inquires for fly wheels I've also sent them my flywheel drawing the company is [email protected]

Thread: pottyengineering small holes centring tool
07/08/2020 08:54:10

I been having problems getting the small holes to run true for injector cones from this post it seems like I'm not the only one to have problems **LINK**

Have come up with this idea its probably bin done before its so obvious and it seem to work well basically its a piece of 5mm HSS with a 60 deg point ground concentric on the end and sectioned like a D bit this is held in a handle then a light spring and a cone with sliding fit 5mm hole. the cone keeps the tool centred on the bar and you simply compress the spring and the tool cut a nice centre perfectly in the middle of the bar.

Her's a cheep and simple way to keep you Brazed TC tools Sharp
Thread: Starting Small Holes
30/07/2020 07:28:15

I've been having problems centring brass bar for injector cones I've tried various methods but still don't always get it correct a friend uses a little hand engraver it looks a bit like a D bit with the front angled I tried this but that didn't work for me, I found the best way is a spotting drill. I've got a high speed drilling attachment but that doesn't work with a spotting drill, I found the best way is to run the lath at top speed and use the spotting drill, then fire up the high speed attachment and start the drill off with both the high speed and the lathe running then when its going in the correct direction to switch the lathe off. I've started using those circuit board drill to rough the holes out they don't drift off line the only problem is they are a bit short, but get enough of the hole drilled to get the number drill going in the correct direction.

The small drills drill like high speeds they go through like a hot knife through butter with the high speed drilling attachment, only problem I've got is getting them on centre and stopping them drifting off line this is best done by pecking the drill. even though with the high speed it will go straight through.

Well i would be surprised if your thread was locked because of a mention of Bang good & ebay. How does anyone help another if he cannot say where to get an item from. I had already seen your youtube vid before i saw this post. Obviously i did not know you were not just a member , but also a moderator on this site. Well done with the work. I have watched a few of your video's & you have done some nice models. Great site , great video's . Keep it up. yes

Thanks for your comment Steve

I don't know the exact reason the thread was locked I just assumed it was because I mentioned the supplier of the parts in the video. I know that there has been some issues with some of the advertisers who support the forum because some companies have been getting free exposure for their products I've no idea just what this exposure was I can only assume that it was from pop ups on utube videos. I don't get any financial reward for my video this is despite being asked to join the system quite a few times, I simply ignore the advances. if any pop ups do appear on my videos it is without my consent.

In stating where the items came from I was simply answering a question that all of us must have asked or answered many time:- "where did you get that from?". I know that people are aware of the problem of companies getting free exposure needs a gentle hand, other wise there is a risk of losing many interesting threads that draws in people to join and contribute, without people participating advertising exposure will reduce a case of throwing the baby out with the bath water.

That's all I have to say on the subject:- I'm off down the workshop to enjoy some more time at this fantastic hobby.

Just unlocked the thread not sure why it had been locked any way I've deleted the video in case that was the offending parts and updated it.

Use to do a lot of small hole drilling at work we always used Titex drill from Germany there expensive but are very good. some followed me home. I've tried the cheep Chinese stuff and they are rubbish some of the sets you can buy at shows are not too bad, some one in China must make good small drills with the stuff that they make I guess they keep them for them selves.

Small drill really need high speeds to work really well so why not make a high speed drilling attachment like this one I made

Stew

I’ve had a few comments about the video that the unit is out of line bending the drill I’ve taken this criticism on board and checked the alignment and yes it was slightly out and I’ve corrected it.

I’ve used it today to make an injector using drill number 63 56 and 68 from the cheep kits under the eye glass they looked okay. I started them off with a spotting drill and they went through at high speed like a hot knife through butter. To give small drills a fighting chance you really need high speed my unit was doing 3000rpm

I hope this helps if any one wants details of the unit just drop me a private message

Just found out that this thread had been locked probably due to the video mentioning a non contributory supplier:- sorry about that chaps I've deleted the video

Anyway her's an update on the project:-

What I was aiming for:- is the ability to flip the unit over and for it to be still on centre, but my first build failed with this aim I eventually traced the fault down to the bearing housing the holes for bolting the unit down were not symmetrical around the centre line of the shaft over 1mm out and they were not square to boot, its partly my fault as I made the assumption that they would be symmetrical.

The corrective work gave me the opportunity to dump the box section and replace it with a 2" square of ally, I've know got the spindle dead in the middle and I can know flip it round to any orientation and it will be plumb on centre, as a test I just cross drilled a 3mm hole through bit of steel, flipped the unit over and used the other end of the fixture to mill a 3mm wide key way see picture.

I'm happy with it know.

The unit is capable of

1 Cross Drilling

2 End milling a key way

3 Cutting a screw driver slot in a screw.

4 Regrinding a fixed centre

5 Sharpening centre punches

6 Truing up the jaws of a four jaw chuck

and no doubt many other things

Her's some pictures
