Thread: Where to buy a new CE stamp? |
24/03/2018 16:07:14 |
Fizzy, why not get some name plates blanks with the CE mark laser cut in and stamp all the other info on before fitting. No need for a big punch then. Chris Gunn |

ndiy, it is running if you study the picture, you can see the sparks. Ian, it looks a fine job, but I would not risk it even if you think the sparks are going downhill. Some welders spats might be handy as well if you value your socks. Chris Gunn |

Ian, if it can make sparks, why are you not wearing safety glasses sharpening your axe? Chris Gunn |
Thread: Portable steam engines |

I am aware of the patterns and drawings for a 4" Ransomes portable, PM me if you are interested and I can put you in touch. Chris Gunn |
Thread: Glass cutting ! |
04/03/2018 12:42:26 |
I just paid £35 for a unit 900 x 550, and fitted it in 2 or 3 hours, the worst bit is cleaning out the old putty. This was bought from a local small glazer, I found the companies that advertise on the web much more expensive. Chris Gunn |
Thread: Metal spinning |

NIce job Jason, I wish I could do such good work in sheet metal. The 4CD guard in question is a straight sided cylinder with an end in it, it was saucepan shaped, and the use of a saucepan provided a nice radius on the end. Chris Gunn |
Thread: Colchester bantam mk1 single phase |
09/02/2018 11:10:29 |
Jon, I have a similar Bantam, in original condition, but mine is 3 phase. On the front of the lathe below the suds tray there is an electrical enclosure with a red emergency stop and to the right of that is a 2 position switch one position points to a red square and the other to a blue square corresponding to the 2 blue and red speed ranges shown on the plate. Mine still has an original 2 speed motor and is connected to a Transwave phase converter so I can use both speed ranges. Once the main motor is running I can also use the suds pump. If yours really is an original single phase machine it will have a single speed motor, and the 2 speed ranges will not be available to you, and I imagine it should have a different speed range plate fitted so you know what the speeds are. They may not be either the blue or red range. The Bantam manual clearly states, 1ph single speed motor or 3ph 2 speed motor. As far as the joystick goes, it does have 6 positions, I rarely move mine as it is set to the finest feed rate, and they can stiffen up, try some maintenance spray around the lever and also try moving it when the main spindle is gently rotated back and forth by hand to help the gears mesh. Neil, it is not a stupid idea, I am aware of a modified saucepan being used for a gear guard on a half size Garret 4CD. |
Thread: Alexander Master toolmaker mill help !! |
07/02/2018 20:01:01 |
Jerry I have a copy of the Alexander manual, but it is not very detailed when it comes to the mechanisms. I also have a copy of the Deckel manual which has a bit more detail, the Alexander is a copy of this so maybe this would help. PM me with your email and I can send copies of the relevant pages. Thread: Iscar face mill |
07/02/2018 14:22:04 |
Andy, I used to buy my Iscar inserts from Cromwell tools, there may be a branch close to you who can help. Chris Gunn |
Thread: Stuart Model delivery |

Matt, bought a Victoria engine kit from Stuart Turner at Ally Pally yesterday, maybe you should talk to them again. Chris Gunn |
Thread: How should I PROPERLY move a Senior mill and Colchester Master? |
21/12/2017 20:26:24 |
Dave that was in 1988, and lucky I had a camera handy. I used up one of my 9 lives that day. I had to get the miller up a sloping floor in my garage, and then over a step into the workshop. It was the step that caused the problem really. NEVER BALANCE A MACHINE ON PALLET BLOCKS. Chris Gunn
|
21/12/2017 20:06:41 |
The biggest problem is getting the machines off the pallets, both will be top heavy. The Stevenson method using angles is OK, or use a suitable engine hoist just to lift the machine enough to slide the pallet out, and lower it onto rollers without attempting to move it. The picture shows what happens when you lower the machine (a Tom Senior by the way) onto pallet blocks under each corner. The pool of blood is mine, the machine toppled off the blocks trapping me underneath, I was lucky in that my father lived nearby and was alerted to my plight by a neighbour, and he used the block and tackle shown in the picture to raise the miller enough to let me out from under. Rule number 1 is never get under the machine or in a position it can fall on you if things go wrong. Chris Gunn |

Thread: Further question re large drills |
16/09/2017 21:26:45 |
Why not make a split brass bush to suit the drill, and support the shank with the centre if it is still there. It may not be so easy to hold the 2 flute drill with is spiral flutes in a 4 jaw. Chris Gunn |
Thread: English dialect |
13/09/2017 22:23:15 |
I have often heard the term used and I am in the midlands. For example when installing machinery, if the machine was installed "on the squint", it needed "scunting" over a bit to get it in the right position. Chris Gunn |
Thread: Surface grinding without coolant? |
12/09/2017 12:25:06 |
When I spent 6 months of my apprenticeship at Timsons on a Jones and Shipman 540, the coolant was used 100% of the time, to avoid burning and extend wheel life as well as keeping the dust down. The same applied to all the grinders in the place, surface and cylindrical. Chris Gunn |

+1 for camlock, especially if you change chucks a lot. I remember a thread on one of the forums showing how to do it together with drawings, it may have been ME. Maybe someone else remembers where it was, but it showed that it can be done. Chris Gunn |
Thread: Pinning topslide on ML7/Super 7 |
04/09/2017 17:08:13 |
Clive, taper pinning a swivelling head is common on industrial machines, so no reason why it would not work for you, I would suggest a taper pin with a male or female thread depending on diameter so you can extract it when required. Chris Gunn |
