Larry- you are right, but these pallets are heavy duty, I think were carrying concrete lintels. Where we live is a 15 mile round trip to buy anything, so save what we can. In the depths of darkest winter you will be thankful for those bits of naily pallet. |

Iain- Kitchen stove for heat source ? Look in the cheap shops- often have small torches at good price. |

Well- my trip for essential vitamins was not wasted- got 1/2 sheet of MDF for w/shop cupboard doors and 1/2" or so core drill. This one has a hex on top about 1/2" a/f. Will pick up later , find a deep socket and try it. BTW I have tried wrecking bars etc. I have one about 5 ft long and all they do is break the wood. Maybe the nails are rusty. I need these boards in best condition I can, going on a car ramp and used as jack base and seating etc. If that fails will try rawlplug modifying as never done before. |

It is pure luck. I was given 4 just a week ago. Cut into them with the angle grinder, one was good, the rest rubbish, so well worth the price. |

Wow! That's fast. Just back in after raking about, found an old 1/2" saw, will try welding an ext. tube on it and a shank. If that fails will try making one from tube. My mistake was thinking I would need a clearance so I could poke the wood plug out, of course the nail will hold it, cut of later with angle grinder. Sadly I don't have an air hammer, just a saw and wrench. I have a big crowbar and they won't shift, breaks the wood. Must rush, haver an offer of a lift to the pub and back, I need the vitamins. |

I need to dismantle some heavy duty pallets, 2" thick timber, held by ring nails. After reading about drilling out broken taps with a hollow drill I had an idea. Drill out the ring nails, only I can't find a suitable hole saw. I need at least 2" deep plus clearance, 1/2" or so diameter. Any ideas on making one for use in a battery drill ? Needs to be quick and easy. I'm only doing this to recover the timber. |

Just find a bit of already square bar of the right size aprox. Door handle bar is ok for a lot of smaller chucks. Does not need anything exotic, not a lot of force needed. |

I was told that Vaseline was first discovered by the old oil drillers in USA. The drill rods sometimes came up covered in a white grease and they used it on burns etc. So assume it is mineral based. Maybe one of our US readers know ? |

Second all that, one of the most interesting articles yet in MEW. I don't pretend to understand the musical side, thrown out of the triangle group aged 6, been bought drink to stop singing etc. Very interesting and useful techniques. |

Our water is very acidic, taps don't last very long. I regularly have to dismantle and clean and polish them. I used copper grease (because I had some ) works very well and no ill effects after 25 yrs. the grease does not come into contact with the water. |

I use a car scissor jack under the table when drilling the bigger holes. Works well, not ideal but free and easy. |

Sean, it is a bit far south but have you been to Thainstone ? North of Aberdeen. Car boot on Sundays, sometimes some good stuff. Also auctions about once a month, look it up in google to see what's on, everything from combines to drills via machine tools. |

If that hammer has a taper spike it may have been used on the lead pipe, belling out the end to connect to copper pipe. I used a podger for that job. |

when I started as an apprentice, many years ago, there was an man who was a top welder. One of the men said to me " see that chap- he'll never get to be foreman. He's too good at his job. " Stuck with me all these years. |

Why does nobody use NiCad cells now ? They would be my choice for your requirements. Not that I know much about the subject. My electric fence uses cast -off car batteries and a solar panel, seems to last years, but very low current draw. |

Well, live and learn. How do FWD get the power to the wheels ? Now I see-- prop shaft / half shaft. |

Well I'll have a guess at broken prop-shaft , no noises etc. |
