Two possible solutions - 1. buy a Berlingo - fixed quarter light is ideal fixing point and no problems with opening windows. 2. Shape a piece of Perspex, or similar, to fit the width of a dashboard storage pocket and wedge it into position with the ubiquitous heavy duty white foam. Can also be used as a small drinks table (while stationary!!!) Have both of these ... 2. in VW Passat. rgds Bill |

Thread: Which Digital Compact Camera? |

Many thanks, gentlemen. Sounds like the Panasonic is much favoured. Norman - nice thought but it doesn't work like that!! I did, in fact, lean towards the TZ70 except for the pixel count - 12mp as against the 18.2 for the Sony. I do understand that the pixel count isn't the be-all and end-all of it. (I have one of the original Minolta EX 1500s and the output from that 1.5 mps is still outstanding!) A major requirement is low light photography - as in 'moon-on-sea'. Her present Canon compact is, similarly, 12 Mps and can't 'produce the goods'. Could very well end up 'coin -tossing' ! Thank again rgds Bill |

G'day all. SWMBO has decided that a replacement digi camera is required for Xmas. Doing the on-line search bit offers several with (at the moment) the Sony Cybershot HX90/90V and the Panasonic Lumix TZ70 as the likely best bets. Do any members have experience of either or both and any recomendations in this area, please? rgds Bill PS - MUST be Compact, NOT Bridge!! B |

Norman - +1 for the Sebo. Had one in the old house which went down with the storm. Now have two - one for up and one for down ... can't hack the stairs plus carrying cleaner anymore. The bigger (downstairs) one has an odd asymmetric shape for edge cleaning and, like the others, built like the proverbial. rgds Bill |

At least those acronyms quoted use existing words ... then we come to NICAM - Near Instantaneous COMPANDED (???) Audio Mode. Apparently a combination of COMpressed and exPANDED. It's origin from across the pond, no doubt. where they, apparently, are going to make America grate again. Still, we can't say we weren't warned rgds Bill |

Thank you so much to everyone for their replies. I am now sorted - as suggested by Bob Stevenson, not for "not very much" but certainly much less than the new price. MichaelG - sounds ideal and may well still try to make replicas. Chris and Rik - just to clarify, the 'surge' was the 2013 N Sea destructive variety, not electrickery JS - Yet again, I wish, wish, wish that I lived next door to you!! Ady - Great minds etc. - have had several glue guns over the years and two days ago picked up one of Lidl's latest offerings. Your point about their usefulness in this sort of area is well made. rgds Bill Edited By Cornish Jack on 10/11/2016 11:50:06 |

Hi all. I have managed to resurrect my Minolta ScanDual 3 from the survivors of our 'surge' damage. Even found the matching power supply and downloaded the manual and XP drivers BUT the slide transport is missing. In essence, it is only a divided strip of plastic with cutouts for the slides. However, the dimensions are fairly critical. Does anyone have such a machine and, if so, could they measure the item. Even longer shot, does anyone have a spare which I could buy? Alternatively, what would be the opinion of trying to manufacture the thing out of thin plastic card and are there any recommended sources for this material, please? rgds Bill |

Silly O D - The Homemaster was, (in its day), well thought out and had the versatility to make the B&D or Wolf or Stanley DIY drill into a much more useful machine. The mounting was adjustable through 360 degs in pitch and rotation and could be set to quite accurate limits (Home woodworking levels). Its Achilles heel was the pressed steel base which could flex under heavy pressure but I couldn't find a better drill stand until I bought the Wolf version with a built-in 2-axis table and hexagonal column. Yet another victim of 2013 rgds Bill |

That advert also shows the Homemaster and Benchmaster accessories - drill stand etc. Probably the cleverest of the drill holder designs and excellent in use. Yet another of my bits and pieces which succumbed to the 'surge' rgds Bill |

When I first got my Myford, it was loose mounted on a large steel plate on 3/4" chipboard. A bit prone to rock on occasion. Second installation was on 2" x 4" bearers about 3' long loose mounted front to back again - similar result but improved with installing a 3 phase motor. The latest will be on the Lidl castor boards (as mentioned elsewhere) which makes for very easy movement and (needed) extra height. One notable point re. the Myford cabinet - the mounting lugs are VERY tight to the cabinet sides, such that drilling pilot holes for hold-downs is very difficult!! I found that it was considerably simpler using a heavy duty flex shaft off the drill. rgds Bill |

Ian - "Arcoy were based in Liverpool ..." Aaaahhh Arcoy - the Buccaneer, if my brain cell is still working? I lusted after Arcoy tools when I first started DIY-ing. Couldn't afford them then, so B&D it had to be. Years later, I managed to buy an Arcoy dovetailer and used it (with the B&D drill! rgds Bill |

Muzzer et al Thank you for your concerns, which were, indeed, taken on board. I've just completed the move, no dramas (or crises!) and the Myford is now safely tucked up in its proper place. Now to see if I can get the VFD back into operation ... THAT really does worry me rgds Bill |

Sam L 1 and Bob R - points re. stability (lack of) well taken!! The intention is not to make this a constantly mobile operation, but to allow me to move it from carport to garage/workshop on the level on my own. Once in position, it will be solidly attached to the structure. One-man endeavour has, on occasion, to modify the best of H&S! rgds Bill |

Decided to 'bite the bullet' and make the Myford mobile, so I can more easily get at the VFD/motor setup , to reinstate it ... so and Now securely mounted on a pair of Lidl's 'Pensioner's Skateboards' - excellent value MDF boards with 4 castors on each. Can now move it into the garage, from the carport, to work in comparative comfort. The hardest bit was erecting the engine lift - 80+ years and a knackered knee and back are not a good recipe for heaving large section metal about!! By my reckoning that's about .001% of the workshop reinstatement completed! rgds Bill |

Thank you, Dave. The point re. crimps is well taken. It's the first time I've used this particular type and they are necessary because of the tiny fixing sockets. I intend to approach this problem with a deal of caution - the second attempt at operating blew the Garage/ workshop breaker! rgds Bill |

Ian - Inverter direct to motor but pendant is wired into inverter to provide Fwd/Rev and speed variation. Connections made into inverter sockets using proper sized crimp pins (took a fortnight to source the correct size!!) Will check individual wires with a digimeter. rgds Bill |

Much belated update. First, the good news - NO magic smoke (yet!!) Next the bad news. Switch on, operate direction and speed controls (on the pendant) produce noises like motor running, accelerating and stopping but NO movement on motor output pulley! Now having coffee and biccies to restore nerves but unsure (totally foxed) as to how to proceed. Suggestions from wiggly amps experts very welcome. rgds Bill
