V8,

I was reffering to the shunter, re your road steam, a couple of weeks ago the National Traction Engine Trust had their 60th Road run and the short route was through my village so I spent an excellent afternoon photographing fifty three of the one hundred and eighty engines http://s47.photobucket.com/user/martinperman/library/?sort=3&page=1 which took part on the three routes.

thanks again

Gentlemen,

I usually go to the Exhibition but I'm laid up with suspected broken bones in my right foot, can a kind gentleman take some pictures please, particularly of boats.

Thank you.

Thread: Wm 14 Suitable machine vice

Bernard,

As an apprentice many moons ago one of the things we learned was that after we had clamped the job in a vice we had to tap the work piece down onto the parallels to make sure it was seated properly, I have done this ever since with what ever vice I have used, you could also check the keep plate underneath and see what the play is between the jaw and the slot it rides in and reduce this a little.

Pete,

I've just seen your posting on the IF forum, please be aware of two things, Forum members do take a while to respond and if nobody does respond its not that we are ignoring you thats just the forums way of saying we dont know.

Pete,

If you go to one or both of these sites there is likely to be somebody that may be able to answer your questions http://www.stationary-engine.net/forum/ or http://www.internalfire.com/index.php they are both good sites but Internal Fire is the better and is a museum.

Peter,

My hobby is collecting Stationary engines and from what I know of the Senior it is like the Hartop and other engines you could buy in casting form the ignition systems and carburation were often sourced buy the buyer so you could find Villiers carburetors found on these engines.

Just done a quick search and found this old advert which lists the carb and ignition as extra's when buying the engine  http://www.howardengineerium.co.uk/Images/Tom-Senior-5.jpg

Thread: Revitalising a lathe - but what is it???
10/10/2014 20:18:03

Iain,

Not knowing the lathe but looking at your pictures I would suggest that the parts your missing would have been an optional extra that were not taken up when it was bought new.

Gentlemen,

The industrial washing machines I repair and service have contactors between the inverters and pumps, the inverters are sitting in idle mode until the contactor is closed and allows the inverter to start, it wouldnt be that difficult or expensive to fit a contactor in line with the inverter and motor.

Thread: (UK) Which Prescription Safety Glasses
03/10/2014 18:29:00

according to my optician there are three grades of varifocals lens which are £50 dearer between each grade, he described the lens pattern like a T shape, the cross bar at the top tapering down to the bottom as the magnification gets shorter, the cheap pair have a narrower T but as the lens gets dearer the T shape gives a wider field of of view through all magnifications, I opted for the dearer pair but had to settle for the mid range but because I wanted transitions as they could add transitions to the dearer lenses, if the glasses slide a little way down my nose I aslo get the motion sickness movement smiley

Kwil,

It maybe just me but I do have problems when wearing over glasses and googles.

Each to his own, I have to use over glasses sometimes but find that they mess with my prescription.

Russ,

I have safety glasses for my work and I wasnt aware that there are differences, I just ordered a pair from my opticians, safety lenses and side guards. As to bifocal against varifocals, I've been wearing bifocals for years and found in the last year a problem with mid distance so asked the very same question as you and the responce was for varifocals so a few weeks ago I had my annual eye test and then ordered a pair of varifocals, it took a couple of weeks to get use to them as you have to turn you head instead of your eyes but I wont be going back to bifocals.

My Grandfather built two scale tugs and a traction engine on a Brittania treadle lathe, not to sure what his maximum cut was, my brother has the lathe well wrapped in his loft.

I was there with my Lister A, not in the main area as when I turned up early Friday morning there was no longer any space so I and others were put between the Rally office and Craft tent.
