Thread: Refurbishing my bench
09/08/2022 15:57:40

One of my mobile bench's has 19mm ply with 1.5 mm steel sheet folded over the edges to protect them, the bench rises and fall via mains powered screw jacks so that I can get a stationary engine on without to much lifting.

Thread: You think you've seen it all
30/07/2022 18:59:00

This morning I had to go to Warwick to another one of the companies Chemists to exchange our delivery vehicle for a replacement, I left Bedford at 9:00 and had a pleasant ride up the M1 and along the A45 arriving at 10:20,the switch was quick and I left at 10:40 for the return trip, as I approached the M1 the boards started flashing 40 mph and not long after we were stopped with the inside lane closed, we were then there for well over an hour whilst several police cars went by, three ambulances, two fire engines and two recovery trucks. I happened to look in my nearside door mirror and about 100 yds or so back from me there was a group of lads playing cricket, there's never a policeman when you need one.

Thread: Secrets of the London Underground
27/07/2022 08:18:56

Gentlemen,

I also like the series and enjoy the presenters, I lived with my parents in the Suburbs, Selhurst, until I was thirteen when we moved to the sticks, Bury St Edmunds, because of Dads work. Most of my family lived in or around London so the Underground was the way to get around, my Grandfather had his own taxi in London and he lived in Thornton Heath and he took his then young grandson to the Science Museum, apparently he struggled to get me inside the building and then struggled even more to get me out at the end of the day, all those knobs and switches as said kept me busy. My mum said that from eight years old I was allowed to catch the train from Selhurst station into the city on the Green coloured Southern railway and the Underground then spend the day in and out of the museums and other sights.

When my daughter was old enough my Brother and I took my Daughter and his Son up to London to annually visit the Museums and Hamley's during Xmas, my Grandson will also make the journey with my daughter and I when he is old enough.

In my later working life until I retired I regularly took the train into London from Sandy and then the Underground to where ever I was working that day, mostly in Universities and Research Facilities.

The one thing I really enjoyed as a small boy was riding the Escalators particularly the deep ones, you could spend the whole day on the underground and not be bored, even the artwork today is worth a look.

I find easing off the throttle a little gets them to take the hint and I've recently fitted a rear facing dash cam which makes a big difference.

Thread: British Homes Have Air Conditioning ?
20/07/2022 07:39:08

The only air conditioning my house has is to open the windows except this last few days where every window has been shut and curtains closed, only one of my cars has aircon.

You can buy portable aircon units but it seems a waste of time when you have to shove the exhaust hose out of an open window.

Spent yesterday afternoon delivering medication, I wear a baseball cap which I soaked in cold water twice during the afternoon and kept my head cool, I also consumed 2.5 litres of ice cold water, the thermometer at home peaked at 37Deg C, same routine again today and tomorrow..

Thread: Filing rest - hardened guides ruining files
12/07/2022 09:46:40

Hopper, thank you for your description of filing buttons.

Larry, I'm sad to say that I've never heard or seen them even during my engineering apprenticeship they never popped up, I dont do model engineering, my grandfather did, but I restore old engines and have my own workshop and have always filed radiuses using radius gauges and following scribed lines.

Thread: Quality of 316 stainless
01/07/2022 18:16:29

Until I retired I spent the last 14 years of work working with an Italian company who made large and small industrial washing machines, the largest big enough to take a car, everything including pipework and the machine bodies were made from 316 and all welds etc were cleaned and polished for finish, the washing chemicals used were Alcaline or Acid depending what was to be washed, the machines didn't tarnish or rust.

Can somebody tell me how to disconnect from this totally out of topic thread please.

Nobody reply please as I've just found how to do it.

As I've said before I restore and show Stationary Engines and this year I curtailed a couple of rally's that I would normally attend because of the cost of fuel, I'm the only driver in our house and I own two vehicles, one is an adapted Renault Kangoo which carries my wife's mobility scooter and I have a Subaru Forester which is used for distance work and towing my trailer to carry my engine(s), my mobility scooter and camping equipment etc. I'm now sticking to small local rally's as Newby hall this year cost over £120 in diesel and I cant justify that every time I go to a rally. Before the cost of fuel took off I'd already made the decision to not show at the Great Dorset Steam Fair anymore, if I hadn't then at the current cost I'd have been looking at £160+ in diesel for that.

Thread: cutting a square end on a round shaft?
13/06/2022 16:56:35

For the ultimate toy in your workshop you could buy a WERA Profilator which can turn squares, triangles, octagons and other external shapes, the only thing its not good at is turning round, will set you back several thousands but is fun to watch.

Thread: Re-boring Grind Wheels
14/05/2022 17:01:16

In a mould with the rest of the wheel around a former as told to me by a sales engineer when I was an apprentice.

Martin P

14/05/2022 14:04:13

After reading the above I'm amazed that some suggested that opening the hole of a grinding wheel would be ok, as a retired service engineer I've had to repair centreless grinders and cylindrical grinders after a wheel let go, if they can bend metal then god help anybody daft enough to do it.

Thread: Inverter Tripping RCD
02/04/2022 16:50:09

My last job before retiring was installing industrial washing machines in Universities and Research facilities, the wash pump and drain pumps were run by VFD's and we had to change the 3 phase RCD's to B or C class because of tripping.

And we (insulin dependent diabolics) lost our 7.5 class more than 20 years ago. crying

That I didn't mind as I lost access to my brothers 7.5 TK when he swapped it for a 11 ton truck, my only annoyance is that I had to de rate my Ifor Williams trailer from 2.0 ton to 1.5 ton as the towing vehicle is 2 ton.

My wife and I will be 76 in May and last week we got the reminder to renew.

Renewing online was easy and straightforward, the main things was to get some details together before starting - passport number, NI number and driving licence number and working out how long we had lived here. Having these to hand first made the process painless. We had no medical issues to slow things down either.

Chris

That's all well a good, I don't have a passport and ended up sending it by post and getting my licence back in a week, I'm not 70 for exactly two years but I'm on a limited licence because I inject Insulin.
