Thread: Parkside (Lidl) Cordless Angle Grinder
21/02/2020 10:51:45

Gentlemen,

Once again a resonably interesting post has turned into a barrack room brawl, does it always have to end this way and spoil everything. We all have our opinions whether right or wrong but dont spoil the post, do it somewhere else.

John and MichaelG,

Thank you for your rapid responses, I have had a quick look at both of your excellent suggestions but feel that they are well out of my league and I'm unlikely to ever use the wealth of information available.

Due to health reasons I've decided to have one more season with my current hobby, I've always been interested in clocks and recently, over the last year I have purchased two, a wall clock of undetermined make and age and a French carriage clock whose make and age I know. On Sunday my wife and I went to a local Antiques fair which we regularly attend and saw a couple who restore, repair and sell Mantel clocks which I took a great interest in and my wife got me to choose one as an early Birthday present so I now own a 1909 Seth Thomas model Kent Mantel clock and I feel I should now learn more about the maintenance and care of this lovely clock and my others past and future, there will be more smiley

Would either of you know of books to assist me in their up keep.

Good evening all,

Can anybody suggest a good magazine on vintage clocks please, I have a new interest, not to make one but to maintain and research histories.

Thanks,

Thread: Adjusting an M&W level
19/02/2020 17:08:53

It would appear to me that the two vertical screws top and bottom would be the ones to adjust, dependant on wether you raise or lower that end by releasing one and adjusting the other.

I've just had a look at a M&W els level and I can only see a vertical screw at one end and a horizontal screw at the other, am I correct.

Thread: What Did You Do Today 2020
19/02/2020 08:55:17

My wife and I live outside of Bedford and we have at least four pairs of Red Kites in the area and in the breeding season their young can be seen taking food from the parents whilst flying.

I'm currently preparing the new VFD and Motor for my lathe, I've built the panel and now need to mount it and the remote to the lathe, have to make a bush for the motor as its a smaller dia than the pulley hole otherwise going well.

The safest most secure and convenient place is inside your head

Edited By Ady1 on 16/02/2020 08:00:21

Sadly I have to disagree that your head is the safest place, many a time I've stood in a shop because I cant recall my card no, I have my own method of recording the number which doesnt involve pen and paper apart from the master kept at home.

Thread: Metric V Imperial Measurement
08/02/2020 13:59:27

I did my engineering in metric and following employment but my hobby of stationary engines has me working in imperial as I did at school. The one thing I find in metric is there are less decimal points to work with than when using imperial.

Thread: J'accuse
07/02/2020 14:44:01

It seems I hace the better half of all, if I placed a series of tools on the kitchen side and asked her to identify any of them she wouldnt have a clue what they were or how to use them, the only tools my wife knows about involve cooking, cleaning equipment is down to me because of her lack of mobility  smiley

John,

For less than £400 Transwave will supply you with a 3/4 hp 3ph motor, remote control and VFD.

Thread: Left handed lathe.
01/02/2020 21:06:14
Posted by old mart on 01/02/2020 20:40:27:

I am left handed, but only use my left hand exclusively for writing, otherwise it is whichever hand is more convenient. The only thing which I think is essential if you are left handed are scissors. One day I will buy one of the left handed digital calipers, but only because they are easier for anyone using a lathe. I feel sorry for anyone, right or lefthanded who cannot manage 95% of things with either hand.

To answer your last comment I can hold tools but dont have a lot of coordination, put a knife in my right hand and I become dangerous smiley

When in the ATC we had .303 rifles whose bolt was on the right side, when I used one I sighted with my left eye, stock in my left shoulder and right hant supporting the barrel, all well until I had to reload as passing my arm and hand over the top to operare the bolt was not easy.

I'm right handed but I have used a left handed monkey wrench ...devil face 20

Geo.

A friend of mine collected over 600 hundred adjustable spanners over the years, all different and from all over the world, and he had a left handed one, as a left hander myself life has been a pain, particularly with electric hand tools, that has to be endured but then we are supposed to be more artistic and creative.
