As previously stated I've started collecting clocks, I've bought a couple of books about upkeep and maintenance and two of the clocks need a little TLC but all the clocks keep good time.

Two of the clocks came from a couple who collect, repair and restore clocks and they both are keen to help with my interest.

Sorry for some of the side shots, they are the right way up on my computer and cant see how to turn them on here.

this is a 1925 German mantel clock whose name escapes me.

a 1970's carriage clock, French, made by Bayard,

A 1909 Mantel, American made by Seth thomas.

A french made wall clock, approx 100 years old.

A1890 Seth Thomas Mantel, American, this needs a little TLC but its time keeping is excellent.

I took a ride up the A1 to Newark Aircraft Museum on Wednesday, I'd never been there before and was most impressed with the exhibits, their theme seems to be late forties and fifties exhibits with a few sixties as well, I took 106 pictures so must have been good.

My soon to be 96 year old mother is in a care home, so my brother and sister and I and our families were organising a visit for mothers day and her birthday the following Sunday, I've just had a call from the home effectively saying they are in lockdown and all gatherings have been cancelled for the forseeable future, well understood by us of course but because mum suffers from vascular dementia and is not sure of time and events it wont be much for her to worry about,

Has nobody noticed that a Health Minister, Nadine Dorris is now in self isolation after proving positive on Tuesday, one of her assistants has it and miss Dorris felt unwell last week whilst in the commons and in a meeting with the PM, she also held a clinic in Flitwick.

How do these probes work, does the small dia pin/ball move when it touches the job or is it just a circuit thats created to switch on a light.

I always thought dock leaves were the go to wiper to use.

My Sister and Husband are in Bulgaria at the moment and she received an email today from her work telling her she is to self Isolate for two weeks before returning to work, my daughter and her co workers are going to be issued with laptops to work from home for upto two weeks whilst the company deep cleans the site, nobody in the company has the virus by the way, the world has hit the panic button.

As Ian reminded me they contain thus stopping transfer to patients etc.

Sadly I would disagree, I have a part time delivery job for a local chemist and the counter girls are constantly "telling" customers in no certain terms fo stop coughing and sneezing at them, one of the girls almost has a permanent cold through the winter.

Apologies Ian, they do contain but they leak at the sides so can allow stuff to get to the mouth and nose.

Before I retired I worked in an indusrtry where face masks were mandatory, I had to do a face fit test regularly when visiting different customers to make sure that my nose and mouth were sealed completely. The test involved wearing a air hood and an amount of foul tasting spray sent into the hood, you were then given a face mask to wear and the hood was put back on and the spray injected in, if you couldnt taste it all was well if you could another mask was tried.

The masks you see people wearing in the streets in the news are totally useless.

Recently my wife managed to weld her poacher lid to the grill heating element, the poacher is stored in the grill and she turned the grill on forgetting it was in there. Anyway I couldnt remove the handle because it had melted around the element so a new element was required but I did manage to make a new handle from nylon I had in stock. I've repaired my children toys over the years as well.

Gentlemen,

My books arrived over the weekend, Practical Clock repairing is a very good read as it talks about virtually every part.

A project arrived yesterday in the form of a 1890 Seth Thomas Mantel clock in need of a little TLC, the dial needs repairing and the case needs cleaning but it keeps good time.

My inspiration came from my Grandfather, for over 60 years he made all sorts of things on his treadle lathe and would never allow my brother and I to put an electric motor on it, as very young boys we made wooden whistles on the lathe or fire up his two coal fired tugs and his 2" free style traction engine. My brother and I both took up engineering and both have workshops to make and tinker what we will because of him.

I'm also inspired by anything mechanical and particularly if it moves, yesterday I watched a Wheeler Dealers program about a Ford Cosworth 4 x 4 Escort they were sorting out, I was amazed to see that one of the drive shafts passed through the engine sump and oil to get to its front wheel, imagine the chap who thought of doing that and then convincing management that was the way to go.

My missus doesn't think they should be chained down - it's just that, whilst I'm chewing over the real value to my sort of activities of this tool or that, she's calmly piling toys and clothes for the grandkids into our trolley...

Funny that, my wife is the same, spend on our Grandson is likely to go exponential soon, ask if I can buy a tool and its what do you need that for

My Daughter and wife bought so many clothes for our first and only Grandchild he is going to have to stay one year old for another year
