I live in Bedfordshire and go for several days at a time, our opening for the new year is next Easter Sunday and the museum is open until the end of October, during this period there is a sign both north and south direction just north of Tan-Y-Groeson the A487. It is well worth a visit if you are into large industrial engines including a working Proteus Gas Turbine Generating set removed from Festiniog.

Gentlemen,

I volunteer at a Museum called Internal Fire http://www.internalfire.com/ at Tan-y-Groes about 25 miles south of Aberystwyth where we restore and show big diesel engines built by Allens of Bedford and we use a Torque Multiplier to tighten the big ends of the engines.

Thread: Clarke cl300m motor
17/03/2012 17:01:58

Tony,

I'm about to change the motor on my Clarke CL500M from single to three phase and the only motor I have found that will fit foot and shaft size is the original manufacturer, any other motor would need modifications to the pulley and foot plate to fit.

Transwave stock the motor I need.

Thread: Er 32 Collets ?
04/03/2012 19:44:56

Bob,

I was given a set of ER32 collets, I looked at making a back plate for my Clarke CL500M but then decided to use a taper chuck similar to your description and then made a draw bar for the lathe. I dont make long parts so it suits me.

Thread: Small workshop projects for 8 - 11 year olds?
12/02/2012 19:16:59
Gentlemen,

How you all bring back memories, my Grandfather taught both my Brother and I to use his lathe, the lathe was a Brittannia Treadle lathe which my brother still has, he got us making wooden whistles which involved turning, drilling, the use of a hacksaw and files.
My Brother and I have spoken of this recently and we are both sure that we were no more than five and three and a half, I being the oldest when we were first shown how to use these tools. What followed was how to fire model steam boats and traction engines and we used to attend Victoria pond in London to help him with his boats.

We both now are engineers in similar jobs and both have our own workshops for our various projects, not modelling but restoration of Stationary engines and Tractors. I attend ME shows because I like to see what you gentlemen get up to and for tooling etc.

Thread: wind up torch
11/02/2012 17:20:03
Gentlemen,

My Grandfather was a chauffer before the Second World War and travelled with the family he worked for so I assume he bought this torch it has a patent no dated 1918 and 1924 and it was made in Switzerland by "Nonox"

Thread: 3 Phase Tripping
04/02/2012 21:23:13
G entlemen,

I install very large walk in industrial washing machines which have 3 phase pumps driven by single phase inverters, we specify to the customer, from memory, a C class 300mA RCD otherwise everytime the machine is turned on it takes a phase out when the inverter powers up.

Thread: Issue 4422
28/01/2012 12:20:12
Gentlemen,

I show Lister Stationary engines driving pumps and generators with flat pulleys and convex pulleys on uneven grass which means the engine and pump pulleys can be at odd angles to each other but as long as they are in line with each other the belts will not come off untill I pack up to come home.

Thread: London Model Engineering Exhibition
28/01/2012 09:29:36
Gentlemen,

I went on the Sunday with two friends, left our car at Sandy Station and caught the bus from Ally Pally Station, we spent four useful hours wandering around and I managed to get everything on the list plus a few other bits. Enjoyed talking to the people on the Victoria pond stand as this was my Grandfathers boating pond and they always have photo's for me to look at.
I went to Sandown a few years ago and it was spoilt by trying to get there, I regularly travel around the M25 with my job so dont want to do it for my hobby and there I find is to much space. I much prefer the London show.

Thread: Cleaning T slots
13/01/2012 18:51:11
As an apprentice one of the tools we made were Tee's the shape of the slot with a tang welded to it which then had a file handle attached which you then drag through the Tee to clear the swarf.

Thread: More chat about sheds
07/01/2012 12:49:20
Bazyle,

When you have a very limited budget bespoke shed builders were way out of my league, For a 12' x 8' I was being quoted £1500 and soon as I mentioned I needed a double door the price leapt another £300.
One suppliers price was so I high I suggested that the one mortgage I already had was enough
