Thread: Combined Mill/Lathe |
03/01/2013 18:28:04 |
Gentlemen, I have a combination lathe and a round column Mill/Drill and they both serve me very well. Everything has limitations as do my machines but once you learn how to use them they do what I want. By the way my lathe is a Clarke CL500 and I make parts for restoring Petrol powered Stationary Engines, I've made some basic mods to it but it gives me no problems. Martin P |

Gentemen, My brother has recently fitted a small heat pump into his double garage/workshop, the idea is to see if it does the job and if all ok fit another. So far he is very impressed with it, it has taken the chill out of the building he reckons. Martin P

I have a CL500m Lathe, a round column Mill drill and a Centec 2A Horizontal mill with a grinding attachement. I also have a 10" Bandsaw which a mate gave me as a thank you for moving his workshop to its new home. I restore stationary engines and am able to make and repair everything so far.

I own a CL500M and often wondered about power cross feed, would obviously have to be electric. I must admit it when I first bought the machine, not from machine mart, it needed fettling but as a machine tool fitter by trade I enjoyed the little jobs that needed doing and over time have got a machine that is quite accurate. A simple thing like fitting lock nuts on the gib strip adjusters made a difference as does keeping it oiled, I'm about to finally fit an inverter and three phase motor to give me a greater range of speeds. I have all of the tools which go with it and have even gone to the expense of ER32 collets and chuck. When I have contacted Machine Mart for help and info they have always been very helpful and no I dont work for them.

Gentlemen, I would say that hand tools come first for me because without them nothing would have got to the lathe, steam engine and tractor etc Martin P |
Thread: If you had 2 hours in the Science Museum |

Neil, If it was me I would walk through the museum from top to bottom and take in everything so that you can plan a proper return visit in the future. In the time you have I think you will see very little in detail.
When very little my Grandfather took me to town to go to the museum in his own taxi, unfortunately I woudnt go in but when he got me in his next problem was getting me back out again Martin P |
Thread: Motor |

Wolfie, If you intend using the pump then please dont use a grommet, you need to use a cable gland which will screw into the bottom of the cable block after as mention you have knocked out the one of two dummy holes, the gland has two purposes and they are 1. makes the internals water tight and 2. gives the cable support as there will not be any cable clamp in side. There is likely to be a connection plan inside the lid to help you attach the cables. Martin P

wolfie, To make use of this pump as a motor you will need to remove the pump, this will also bring with it the the bearing casing for the motor as they are all one casting, by the time you have machine the pump away it wont be worth a lot. the motor shaft will need modififying as this isan extended motor shaft to support the pump impellor. Neil, I've been using these De Burrer's for years in both work and hobby, I tend to use one tool for every thing from plastic to steel with no detrement. I also have two ceramic tools which look like knives with square cutting edges which are also quite good. Martin P |

Gentlemen, The two main scrap yards around me require you to have a hard hat and a high vis waist coat which I personally think is a good idea wether taking in scrap or looking for the odd piece of metal. Loads of vehicles and grab cranes moving about make them dangerous places. Martin P

Thread: Raglan vertical milling machine 2MT chuck removal |
04/08/2012 17:23:07 |
Robin, My method is a bit major but did work and will need the spindle removed and put in the deep freeze for a few days, remove and heat the spindle, not the chuck and hopefully it will expand away from the chuck tang which followed by a sharp tap will remove it. I did this to my lathe tailstock which when I bought it had a tang less chuck stuck in it. Martin P |
