Thread: Welding wrought iron
29/12/2018 11:17:52

It wasn't only Edinburgh, Glasgow and Paisely lost all their iron railings too. The same thing happened here in NZ, but before WW2, then during WW2 the Japanese tried to give it all back.

Thread: 9" junior hacksaw...?
27/12/2018 09:53:12

Are you sure it's not a Coping-Saw blade, maybe not just went out to the workshop , and that is 7" long. Wood workers used a thing called a Bow-Saw tensioned with a bit of string across the top Spanish windlass style, thes saw came in a number of sizes.

Thread: Welding wrought iron

You need a forge, an anvil and a big hammer, and some sand for flux. Yes wrought iron is a bit of a beginers trap when it comes to welding.

I'm no musician, but I love the sound of the old instruments.

Could say I played an ancient keyboard, not too long ago I was on Windows 95, and 98 (thats about that).

Thread: Forum under constant siege

Thanks HughE. The above site gets large write ups for things like Adidas shoes etc. I usually end up reporting them in to be deleted, but on three occasions we have been swamped with hundreds of these things, and arriving on site so fast that the only cure is to shut down. I don't think there are any official moderators, only Boydhouse the site owner. It seems as though it is a problem effecting all on the internet.

Thread: Christmas disaster
26/12/2018 09:59:33

Ah, for Christmas dinner you need the Kiwi tradition of the BBQ, then your only worry will be "did I get the gas cylinder filled", or like ours yesterday, the drizzle of rain and a leaking O-ring, and a replacement hose and regulator.

Thread: Oxy propane guidance
26/12/2018 09:49:58

David, I'v done 3 conversions from OA to OP, on one I think we used the regulator from an old BBQ, the other two were rush jobs with no regulator on the LPG(the last one will get one). For brazing use a larger tip than you would with acetylene. The Oxygen is set fairly low, can't remember what pressure. It is a bit more difficult to get the torch to light up, but once you have the LPG lit, slowly open the oxygen, then a bit more gas. Once you have it set up you;ll love it.

Thread: TEST THREAD
26/12/2018 09:08:07

Usually after you have joined in with some postings in the forum, maybe a question, or suggestion about some topic you have interest in. I think the idea is to have new members with interest in one or more of the subjects on the forum. Welcome aboard John. PS one of the moderators will probably pick up on this and tell you the real story.

Thread: Forum under constant siege

On another forum, "The Stirling Engine Forum" that I frequent we have had big problems over the years, big enough to close the site, and have to change who provides the site(don't know the correct term), the site is still running but we lost the photo galleries that we had.

Keep up the good work Neil, and best wishes for the New Year.

I believe that safe manufacturers such as Chubb by used tungsten carbide to pack into the case of "Drill Proof" safes.

Thread: 3 cyl Pip engine

Have no fear of broken taps in alloy, they can usually be dissolved with a solution of Alum (there are a few threads on the subject). Thankfully not needed here, lovely little engine.

Thread: Lathe crash!
20/12/2018 15:27:41

You have probably broken the lead screw sheer pin, it's not hard to do. In my early days with my 1326 belt head Taiwanese lathe I broke mine, I got muddled up, and in the process grabbed the carrage feed hand wheel just before the tool post hit the chuck. In the tool box that came with the lathe was two spare sheer pins.

Thread: Eccentric's "Turnado"
17/12/2018 10:23:21

I think the colour of the cast iron is not caused by the lack of carbon in the metal, but by the excess of free carbon, what ever, I like the colour, hope it is durable.

Thread: Baldor Bench Grinder wont get to speed
17/12/2018 10:16:52

I was going to say that the start switch had stuck, and the motor as running as a 4 pole motor, you finding the windings over heated more or less confirms that.20 or 30years ago there was a story in ME by a guy who ran his pillar drill using the start windings to reduce speed, this gave him double the normal speeds. Then one sad day the magic smoke leaked out , and the motor died.

Next is to build a traction engine, same scale to tow the gun. Then probably find a military museum that might display the pair.

Thread: Colbalt Lathe tools
15/12/2018 11:17:44

HSS wood lathe tools have a great advantage over carbon steel when it comes to sharpening, you don't draw the temper if you get the edge just a little warm. I feel that a well sharpened carbon steel skew chisel, scraper, or gouge cuts better than HSS, but the HSS holds the edge it has longer.

Thread: How far to be off tool centre before a turned finish becomes poor?
15/12/2018 11:07:07

My height gauge is a 6" engineers square, I sat it on the saddle, and scribed a line across the blade at centre height. There are actually two lines about 3 mm apart, the other is for the Vertex rotary table,

Good source of shims is the I laminations from an old transformer, drink cans off cuts of hot rolled steel. On my lathe some tools may need up to 1/2" packing.

A boring bar should be from 0, to a few thou high.

Thread: What did you do Today 2018
14/12/2018 11:55:59

Perko 7, I must get some photos of my hitch, the hitch part on the trailer is 2" long with a 3/4" bore, the part on the bike is in two parts, one at the top, and the other at the bottom, ie double shear. through the three parts is a 3/4" dia pin(tube actually), head at the top, and a R pin through the pin at the bottom or the main pin tends to work it's way out. The set up must be ridged vertically. You should have no stability problems. You could try having the main beam of the trailer an inch or three lower than the axle height. My trailer with 16" wheels has 6 1/2" road clearance.

This is also towable, it is a home built alternator with a 3hp Kawasaki motor, mounted on a home built sack barrow. when hitched up the wheels at the Lh end are removed. Total cost $NZ10 for the motor, $NZ26 for the main wheels.

Thread: It's not rocket science

I'd think space would be an ideal place for welding, no oxidation, no other nasties. Weld anyway,no gravity. I wonder if anyone has tried?
