Sorry Andy, got a bit mixed up with another Laura. It might be worth having another bit of a go at yours sometime in the future, it's good to get it up and running. Ian S C |

I use a Skoda live centre. Here is a quote from the note in the box of a new centre: According to the Czechoslovak Standard CSN24 3303, the live centres are only preserved. Lubrication of bearings to be done through the holes covered with a screw and plug. The screw is the one on top, and the plug is at the end of the MT. My first centre died after about 15 years of over work (its an MT #2 size), although the agents offer a repair service it was cheaper to buy new, so centre no 2 has done over 10 years, and should see many more. The front grub screw locks the front retaining ring in place, undo this and you can take out the screwed ring to change the grease. The rear plug needs a pin wrench. Ian S C |

About the old type meters, back before the 2011 earthquake in Christchurch NZ Whispertech, the manufacturer of the Whispergen Stirling Engine domestic power supply had one of their units set up in the workshop with an old rotating disc meter on it, and most of the time it rotated backwards with the hands on the dials moving backward. For black wax filling the wax is mixed with lamp black/carbon black, this is easily obtained from the flame of an ordinary candle, this can be mixed with epoxy glue, and that used instead of the wax. Ian S C |

John's pretty well covered the Stirling engine. I'v been looking at your build thread from 2 or 3 years ago, you were going well right up to the end, then you pulled it apart to clean things up, then you had alignment problems, I think if you fix that you should be OK. One thing that I like is the displacer rod guide, but it could be trouble if not dead on lined up. |

Things must be different here. It's easy to change supplier, you could do it any time you like. Gone are estimated power bills. I think you get charged extra if you don't have a smart meter, and every alternate one will be an estimate. The meters were at no cost, and a lot of the old ones were getting old, and past their use by date, and would have cost more than the SMs to replace. Most of what I see in the News Paper link from the UK is utter BS in my opinion. 1kwh is 1kwh smart meter or not. Ian S C |
Thread: Every Tea Room needs a toaster topic... |

Our first toaster was a bit more streamlined than the one in the Bert Monro photo, trying to think of the make, possibly Necco, or Zipp, it would have been made in NZ, we would have got it about 1958/59, I think it lasted into the 1980s, I don't think it ever had a new element, the policy in our house was just fix the old one, if you lose an inch of heating wire it doesn't seem to matter. I did a similar repair on the pop up about twenty years ago(it was about ten years old then), and its still going strong. One thing with the old ones was that they had only one element, where as a pop up has three. Ian S C |

Jason, Is there some obstruction in the burner design that prevents a complete ring of burner holes? Not important as the burner seems to be doing its job well, how does it go in the chimney. Ian S C |

I'v made one into a Robertson driver, too hard to file, ground it up with the Dremel, it was a Philips so the original tip was a good guide for forming the square free hand. Another was made into a 3 flute driver for a special screw. A couple more have points on them, the first one was for aligning rivet holes in aircraft skins. I have thought of using a redundant screw drive for a crankshaft for a hot air motor, but I'v never got round to it. Ian S C |

I did have, many years ago, the Revell Visible Aircraft Engine, I was at the time a bit disappointed in the quality, allthough I may have been biased as I was doing an apprenticeship as an aero- engine mechanic, and though a P&W R-1340 should look like an R-1340. I would say go for it, they are mostly held together with screws and little nuts. Ian S C |

Welcome Paul, to start with you probably don't need much of a workshop, the greatest amount of model engineering goes on in the design department situated in the top two inches, once that starts to fill up then is time to turn it into something solid. Keep working on the management. Ian S C |

Out in the workshop last night, needed more light, switch on portable LED flood light, nothing happened. This morning Opened the lamp unit, and found the 36V LED driver was dead, hunted out a 32V power supply ex HP lap top, took out the dead power supply, wired in the new one and we have light once more. On the cylinders I make for hot air motor (what ever type), I lap the piston after lapping the bore until the piston will just slide through the bore under its own weight, and if the end of the bore is blocked off the piston should virtually stop, if it keeps going, make another piston its too loose. Thread: Micrometer woes |
27/01/2019 11:02:47 |
Last year when I joined up with the local Menz Shed, initially just to get the Box-Ford A lathe up and running, I found that someone had taken a block of wood about 100 mm x 75 mm x 300 mm and drilled holes in it to take all the drills next to the drill press, I wanted a drill, but had a hard job getting it out of the block, the shank had rusted, as had the shanks of all the other drills. I soon got rid of the wood, and made a drill stand from steel. Got a number of different cases for micrometres, the one for the old Starret is some old type of white plastic, mabe Casien, it's warped. Another has a steel spectacle case type container. The 1" to 2" mic has the plastic box it came in, and my ex Russian fishing boat 50 mm to 75 mm mic has a fairly large wooden box with a sliding lid. No problems with any of them. Ian S C |
