If the concrete is being relaid and the hardcore is 2' deep remove the hardcore and relay it in 4" layers compacted. It is not sensible to relay concrete without doing this as the hardcore will keep sinking down.In the drought of 1976 whole floors left the skirting in properties built on clay which dried out and shrank letting the concrete sink. hardcore was tipped in without compacting in layers before this date and the regulations were changed after this.

I have had experiance of this Allen and I pumped oil through and it flushed out the grease.

Peter,if you have a face plate you can clamp both to it so long as the plates miss the bed you can centre and bore.

Thread: What did you do Today 2018
09/02/2018 21:12:15

I had made a mistake with my choice of aluminium for a cylinder with an aluminium piston. As advised by others on the forum I have taken their advice and bought a stainless steel tube to form a liner.Today I bored for a press fit and after trueing up the outside of the tube I loctited the cylinder after heating it then cooling the liner in the fridge,I used my large joiners vice and it went in no trouble .I have now got to set up again in the four jaw and bore to size.I am well pleased all thanks to this helpful forum.

I prefer carbide inserts for most of my tooling.

Thread: delivery

Sam, the reason I was pleased is that two suppliers could not even pick up the phone and any supplier who dose the business might be of interest to other fellow members.

I have no connection to this company.I sent an email order to metals4U before lunch on the 7th and I recieved the stainless tube mid morning today the 8th.You can't get any better than this.

Thread: ward 2A lathe
03/02/2018 21:05:21

I bought a 2a to make the wheels for the traction engine I was making in the 80s .It had a 5 horse single phase motor and when turned on the power wood trip the fuses,I had to let the clutch in real slowly to keep the power on.It was a treat to use.I advertised it for 300 pounds and was suprised when a local engineering firm called me and wanted it for their factory.Whilst it was being loaded onto the lorry I got a call from another factory wanted it,I told him that it was just sold and he offered me more money than I was asking but unfortunately it was gone.I didn't realise how sought after these machines were.

Thread: piston allowance in bore
30/01/2018 15:35:41

Ian

That sounds like a good idea,I will see what i can find .I never considered that the piston might bind on the skirt,It's what I like about this forum one is always learning from others experience, thanks Ian.

Jason, thanks for the information,I wiii be using a 1' adjstable reamer and finish with lapping.

Ian, the reason I am using aluminium is because I could not find a small supply of 2 1/4" stainless and aluminium will not rust as the engine is water cooled.

I am building Brian Rupnow's Rockerblock ic engine and I would like advice on the allowance to leave of the the piston diameter in the cylinder .The cylinder and the piston are aluminium. There is an O ring for the piston ring and I would like to know if I leave a cirular bottomed groove or a square one and side and bottom allowance. It is a 1" bore.I have made cast iron rings before but not fitted an O ring or worked in alluminium.

Thread: Spalding model engineering showOn
23/01/2018 22:35:32

On trying to download an entry form for the spalding show I was suprised to see that it has been cancelled, but is still showing in the events page.Dave Webster started this show and it has gone from strength to strength better every year for the past 4 years and it is a credit to his familys efforts. This was a much needed show in this region as we are a long way from most shows and it gave the eastern region hobby engineers a chance to show at a good exhibition.I for one will sorely miss it.

Thread: loctite
18/01/2018 09:35:41

Hi all

I need to glue in my valve cages on the rockerblock engine I am building.I have some loctite 603 will this be acceptable. The cages are direct into the cylinder head.

Thread: Boring a hole in brass
14/01/2018 16:59:27

I have bored a hole with a cross hole through and the deflection when boreing over this hole made the bore slightly tapered.I would bore first and cross drill and use either a reamer to debur or an internal scraper.

Thread: In-line Diesel Engine Model
14/01/2018 16:50:02

Akroyds engine was a hot bulb oil engine but I was told by a Hornsby trained fitter circa 1900 that a true diesel engine had been developed but the complexity and cost of retooling the factory was too great as they were selling lots of oil engines which could run on any oil that would go through the injector and any untrained labour could work them. The Statue Of Liberty used one to power the light.

I'm with Russell on making a slotting tool that feeds the top slide ,it will relieve any pressure on the rack. The tool will get a lot more use than you think.

Thread: Milling very hard steel
05/01/2018 00:14:29

The hole visible houses a screw which stops the collet twisting and you can just get a c spanner to hold.I usually use an ER 32 chuck but I have had a cutter work down and ruin the work on one job so when using large cutters I use the Posiloc chuck

Thread: Recommendations for a quality milling vice?
31/12/2017 07:45:48

I made my own from an article in an old ME magazine. Fixed threaded block with hold down T bolts a movable jaw with a hold down into the T slot pushed by a bolt through the fixed part and a movable jaw that travels the length of the mill giving 10 " working space with Gauge plate screwed to the working faces.I seldom use any other vise and it is onle 2" high.

Thread: Myford cross slide bearing mod
29/12/2017 08:05:47

There was an article on taking up backlash I think in a Model Engineer magazine, where the slack was taken up with a copper pipe slid over the leadscrew from front to back allowing enough space for a strong spring to act on the rear of the topslide .The copper was slightly bell mouthed to keep the spring central. It was in a recent magazine and someone will have seen it and can comment on it's use in your situation.

Thread: What Did You Do Today (2017)
10/12/2017 18:50:57

squared up to size two blocks of alluminium using my small horizontal stub miller before reducing to size on my sx3.It's nice to machine but a pain to stop carting the swarf into the house even after changing my work clothes. There was even a piece in the bed and I didn't find it, you all know the the bother this caused.
