Thread: Another Smart Meter thread.
10/11/2022 16:46:59

I have just be quoted on a Group Buy package 16 PV panels and batteries for around £14K. Green or not that is a lot of cash up front and a very long payback time.

Yes there is a downside, by setting different charge rates at different times of the day, I can be persuaded to do my washing (for instance) in the evening so as to make it cheaper. This may not fit in with the pattern of life that I live.

OK guys, advice please. I do not want or desire a 'smart meter' & thus far have resisted my suppliers pleas to have one installed, they are now saying I must have a new meter installed due to safety concerns as my old meter is 15 years old! Can I still refuse, I'm guessing not ?

Tony

I had the same message, ignored it and they have not followed it up (yet). Just trying it on as far as I am concerned. I believe less than 50% take up of so called Smart Meters so far.

They are known as Laydown Threading Cutters. Whitworth are 55 degree threads so you can use a single tip for a wide range of thread TPI, but of course as the threads become lower TPI there is a limit.

You can buy specific cutters if you wish.

Look at www.apt.co.uk they are specialists

Look at the condition of the slots where they begin to stick, possible slight damage, but enough to stiffen.

Micheal,

What an interesting reference. A lack of basic engineering experience also caused him problems, but he persevered.

Thread: Harrison M300 Lathe VFD and motor options

I would suggest sticking with the original motor as I have, I run on a dedicated radial. I wrote up a detailed conversion of my M300 in MEW some time ago (2009), using all of the original control functions.

Yesterday I made the mistake of updating to the latest Win 10. Disaster.

Microsoft has taken control of my Lapton, Wants me to open a Microsoft Account, leaves a voice operation,(I rejected Cortana ages ago).+ other unwanted items.

How do I escape and remove update?

A much better option than risking the gear teeth. If the back gear SHCS broke, it would be unlikely to be difficult to remove and replace. It wouldn't be wise for a super 7 owner to try a similar fix. After I saw the first of the 3D printed spindle locks on sale, I got a 20mm thick nylon plate and made a copy on the mill for the Atlas lathe, not as pretty, but very strong and it has to be slid sideways into position as the forces are spread over 13 teeth.

Thread: Missing part for ml7 qu gear box
11/10/2022 15:49:01

Part Number is 196 A2286 Thrust Block. The sqare part fits into the movalble gear shaft below it and the round pin on the top of the Square is a fit in the 193 A2272 Quadrant Plate that is moved by 197 A2511 Upper Lever.

All part numbers are the same on QC Gearbox for ML7 and Super 7 Lathes

When made the part is a snug fit with between the Quadrant and Shaft location.

Thread: Milling:Holding a plate
08/10/2022 09:49:35

I recently saw the use of Blue multi surface masking tape for holding down an aluminium plate on a mill.

Tape the underside of Al plate, tape the top side of potentially sacrificial mountiing surface, superglue the two taped surfaces together using a weight. Then mill

When finished, split the two tapes with a chisel. Not tried it yet but it worked OK

Thread: MEW 320

Just received MEW 320. Recently I criticised an issue, but this one is the best for a long time,Wide range of items and all of interest even at a general level. Please continue with the practical workshop projects.

I also subscribe to other Morton mags, I think to new owners bring a much better approach to MEW and ME.
