I talked to them at Beaulieu autojumble in May. They certainly plan to do further shows this year.

Southampton water is extremely hard and I have had a water softener for a number of years. Very well worth while! When we last replaced the boiler I kept the loft cold water tank (supplying the HW cylinder) fed from the softener as it made it easy to arrange a softened cold feed to the upstairs bath and shower pump. Unfortunately the geometry made it impractical to run the downstairs electric shower from the softened supply, but it doesn’t get used as often anyway.

It will not work if you have an older computer without a tpn module. Older motherboards like mine have a socket and you can install one, but it may not be worth the cost.

I used to have a book of microscopy techniques for amateurs. It described subliming realgar (arsenic trisulphide) on to a microscope slide for mounting diatoms. It was the preferred medium due to it’s high refractive index for counting the dots. Not something I would do without a fume cupboard!

It was also used as an artist’s pigment - must have made a few people rather ill.

I have to dispose of a large number of back issues of Model Engineer from a deceased friend's workshop. There are about 30 complete volumes between 81 to 204, and about 55 part- and almost-complete volumes from 80 to 220. The condition is mostly good.

The complete collection is available for a donation of £100 to Tools for Self Reliance. It would need to be collected from Southampton (it would need an estate car or small van). It must be taken as a lot - no pic-and-mix!

It would be a shame to put them in the recycling bin. If you want a more detailed breakdown of what is available , PM me and I will send a spreadsheet, although it will not contain details of individual issues, only volume numbers.

It’s a variation on this theme, but the last time I broke down a compost heap I found three vegetable peeling knives - and they were still usable after a trip through the dishwasher!

The traditional way with large diameter copper is sand filling, tight plugs at each end and lots of heat. I imagine this is still done in continental Europe where copper is used for rainwater downpipes on historic buildings. Real craftsmanship!

It would be worth contacting Jenny Blackwell at JBCuttingTools.com. I have bought similar inserts from her at shows, and their postal service is super-efficient.

Amazon list a pump for use with electric drills which is allegedly suitable for oil and costs £10.99 - not a lot to gamble!

You could also consider the Jarno taper series - they also have smaller increments than the Morse series.

Stark used a unique collet size. I bought some old collets thinking they were 3C, found they were not and finally identified them from the table in Machinery's Handbook 10th edn. I do not know if the tailstock is the same taper, but it could be one of the Brown and Sharpe ones - they vary by smaller increments that Morse.

I did advertise them and got no takers - if they are of any interest send me a PM and you can have them for a charitable donation to Tools For Selfreliance.

This thread reminded me that I used to enjoy seeing the stainless steel bull in front of the Avesta steelworks beside the M1 near Sheffield. All gone now, but the bull survived and Google tells me that it is now outside the Magna Science Adventure Centre at Rotherham. It was too big for my front garden anyway!

Thanks for the information DC31k - perhaps it's all a home job! I'll stop bothering with it and treat myself to an ER set to add to the Autolock for non-threaded cutters.

Only one slot is complete (see the picture of the tail end) so it would have a limited closing capacity. It may be home-made as it is not fully-hard, but the chuck does look professional although scruffy. There are no identifying marks at all.

I cannot find dimensions for the obselete Schaublin E or ES series collots, but it does look similar to the photos I found. It may have the same taper as the ER series but I don't have any to make a comparison.

Thanks for the suggestions - I'll try searching on-line. The collet came with a 3MT chuck, so some more sizes would be useful.

1) 2 off stepping motors. I do not have drivers to test them but the windings check out and they were removed from working equipment.

2) 2 off large air-damped relays. 240 V AC coils; contacts rated 10A break, 20A make @ 240V. They are heavy - 1.7 Kg each!

3) 2 off solenoid air valves. 24 V DC coils. Made in USA so may have NPT threads.
