Ok, so the latest ME 4408 is now available in digital editions - but using the OLD reader, not the new one as was with 4407. What is happening, are the digital editions going to have a new reader or not!! regards Graeme |

Strange David, it seems like ME doesn't hit the digital issues until AFTER it hits the news stand yet invariably MEW is available in digital issues before I get my subscription issue which is rarely before it hits the shops!!! |

What's going on with the digital issues, I have had issue 4408 for over a week now but it still is not available as a digital issue!! CB |

Mike, that looks like a good basis for the design, I've been pondering this for some time, looks like you've hit the nail squarely on the head here. Look forward to seeing this develop. regards Graeme |

Please can we have a proper forum supported by a proper BBS engine so that searches postings images etc etc etc can all be easily managed and not this clunky pathetic attempt at a forum. |

The new reader is certainly a huge improvement on the old one. Just printed MEW179 to a PDF using PDF Creator and it has produced a very clear readable PDF in lightening quick time. I am running Windows 7 Home Premium 32 bit on a 4Gb Asus notebook and running Firefox 5 with no issues at all. DC1 - ![]() cheers Graeme |

Thread: Oil or Grease? |
27/06/2011 19:30:35 |
Whenever I clean my chucks, I use a fine brush and apply a very thin film of copper grease to all mating surfaces. I find that this does not fly off at high speed and also is thin enough not to attract significant build up of debris. regards Graeme |
Thread: Tapping a Blind hole |
27/06/2011 19:25:19 |
Hi, If your taps are of good quality and are sharp, you so should be able to grind them to facilitate tapping to the bottom of a blind hole. I have several taps ground in this way. I always use HSS taps rather than the cheaper carbon taps for this purpose as they keep their edge better. regards Graeme |
Thread: Free drawings |
27/06/2011 19:15:28 |
Hi David, Can you expand on that statement regarding the free drawings? Whatever you are proposing, will it be available to both paper and d igital subscribers? What will be the format? printable PDF's or some other? regards Graeme |

Thread: Whittle V8 - Crankshaft |
20/06/2011 17:21:37 |
Hi Steve, My first crankshaft looked pretty much the same as yours ![]() I machined up some eccentrics which clamp to the crank whilst finish machining the throws, these are then held in bearing four point fixed steady. Using this method, I was able to produce a straight finished crank. That said, I have now abandoned the project and am embarking on a X2 scale version of the same engine for various reasons. The other option would be to set up the crank on the ofset centres and then use a toolpost grinder to finish the journals. A good quality mini flexi shaft can be used for this, just check that there is minimal runout in the bearings. I have used an american built Foredom flexi drive with reasonable success although, I have replaced the bearings with higher spec than original. regards Graeme |

David, your response is somewhat gib, 'I doubt it' is not the most helpful response! Why are the publihers not giving consideration to upcoming technologies. Many of us are now adopting IPAD or Android. The publishers should be looking at providing suitable apps to accomodate viewing of the digital issues on the various platforms. regards Graeme |
Thread: milling vices |
14/06/2011 22:44:07 |
I too baulked at the cost of a decent milling vice and made the mistake of buying on a budget. I have since ditched the 'budget' vices. For small to medium sized work, I have been using the DH1 vice from Warco, and with the soon to be available high jaws, I suspect this will become my vice of choice. Its capacity and holding capability belie its modest footprint. For larger jobs, I invested in some extremely heavy duty vices similar to those supplied by Kurt in the USA, these are used for heavy milling of large components. For a smaller Mill, the vices produced by Soba or Vertex are a suitable alternative. Avoid vices which offer multipkle axis of adjustment unless you have a specific need to machine compound angles, as each adjustable angle adds to the instability and flexibility of the vice. For small parts, the precision vices sold by ArcEurotrade and Chronos amongst others are very useful, and can be held in a larger vice where necessary. regards Graeme |
Thread: Quorn Kit |
10/06/2011 13:20:24 |
Hi Terry, I have just checked my drawings and parts list, here should be 16 castings for a Mk2 kit. Despite the fact that there seems to be a lot of completed parts, I think the price a little high considering there is no motor or grinding wheels included. It certainly looks like the base castings are missing, I can't make out what others but as the book is included, the seller should be able to confirm all the parts that are missing. Keep in mind that a suitable motor will cost you upwards of £60, I think there are better bargains to be had. I paid £200 for a complete kit with the motor. Here are a couple of useful links to building a Quorn which has some good info in them. regards Graeme |
Thread: Living with the digital copies |
07/06/2011 23:15:12 |
Posted by John Stevenson on 07/06/2011 22:59:48: Why are we having to jump thru hoops ? We get or pay for the digital issues, they do allow is to print them out even if it's one page at a time. The problem is print quality which to put it mildly - sucks. If My Hobby Store put a printed issue out in this format it either wouldn't be sold or there would be complaints. So why do they do this with the digital issue ? it's paid for, it's goods under contract and not fit for purpose. End of story, no limp excuses needed - sort it. John S. Absolutely agree John, I am so fed up with lame excuses for what can only be described as abysmal copy! The digital issues for me do not replace the printed materiel but provide a useful, quick reference to past articles. That said, If we are provided with a digital copy as part of ourt subscription, then it should be useable. That also means that we should be able to print out parts of articles that are of readable quality. Of all the test prints that I have done, the quality varies from barely acceptable to totaly unuseable. I appreciate that this site is still in a development phase and is in all respects quite immature in its technology, that said, with all that is available for the publishing of digital content, there is little excuse for the poor publishing quality. In this era of technological ability, there really is no excuse for the quality we see in the digital issues. |
06/06/2011 17:11:54 |
Not a poke at you DC1 as I know you are the middle man here. But for the publishers to say ' We are looking in to why they cannot print the entire issue or feature and only one page at a time.' ?? As regards the print quality, if it is readable on screen, then the same quality should be available in the downloaded copy. If it is not readable on screen, then they need to up the resolution at which they scan the images into pdf for presentation. I do hope that the new software under test improves the situation, If it does, then I think they should undertake to improve the archives as well, I accept that with some of the very old archives this will not be as succesful as more recent issues but, I am sure there is something that can be done. How about an appeal to owners of older issues to submit Hi Res scanned PDF's of their magazines, maybe under the incentive of a reduced digital subscription for a period. I for one would be happy to scan any issues that I have and submit them as PDF's regards Graeme |
