Thread: Old White Piano Key wanted!

Martin King 2:

Not sure if you posted the excellent photos in response to my request but many thanks for them anyway. Previously, I had only ever seen the rectangular style which is probably more convenient in pubs where space may be limited

Many thanks. I might look at a simple rain alarm, rain being my interest at the time I bought the Maplin device.

I have one of those which has stopped talking to the internal weather station. Did you find a satisfactory replacement, please?

My local TS and SF exist quite literally next door to each other.

Now I know why their catalogues look so similar.

Thread: ER Collets
21/12/2017 17:24:23

I enjoyed the video but it was sobering to be told that as little as 0.010" oversize on a tool shank would damage the collet. Instinctively, it seems better to spring the collet ever so slightly than to close it down by as much as 0.030".

By the way, are Rotabroach cutter shanks 19mm or 3/4" dia? I prefer to use them in a (shopmade) standard holder equipped with two side screws. Their intended use is not high precision, I believe.

A suitable tap can be used in lieu of a screw pitch gauge.

The first photo in my Miscellaneous album shows the similar guard I made for my standard S7.
This became redundant when I upgraded to VFD.

PM me if you are interested.

Thread: Rear parting off tool
14/12/2017 11:33:04

BOB BLACKSHAW:

I can't claim to be a beginner but I am certainly no expert; it's your own experience that matters.

GHT's Mk1 device dealt with your point by having one of his blades set horizontal but he later found this unnecessary for brass (as I do). The beauty of his rear toolpost is that any number of turrets can be made and quickly exchanged so that you could have zero or negative rake if you wanted. I used to use the KIT-Q-CUT blade and insert in a dedicated turret until the blade failed when I happily reverted to the standard turret with two HSS blades.

BOB BLACKSHAW:

You could consider the Hemingway kit based on the GHT design. The latter incorporated two p/o blades set at 7 degrees in an indexable turret; the smaller is used for up to c. 1.25" and the larger for up to c. 1.75". The blades are 1/16" and 3/32" thick respectively.

I agree that there may be times when the ability to adjust for diameter is useful but in practice the two-blade design works well. The effect of the 4 or 7 degree angle is to avoid the need to grind top rake on the tool which only has to be sharpened on the front face.

Apart from suggesting ivory substitute, I can't help but would be glad to see a photo of the cribbage board.

Sad to think how may pianos were smashed for fun in competitions!

SillyOldDuffer:

Sorry to hear about your setback.

Did you try putting in a new insert to see if the problem lies with the existing? I have no experience of this blade but is there an aluminium-specific insert for it?

That said, it does look as though the blade has yielded under the dig-in. What about the other end of the blade, assuming it is double-ended? I guess they are made this way because the blade pocket does not last indefinitely.

It would probably help to run the tool upside down in forward, the idea being that the chips then fall away from the cut (I don't think you should be aiming for a continuous ribbon, by the way).

Finally, can you mount the tool with minimum overhang in the Z axis?

As well as LH Sparey's "The Amateur's Lathe" it's worth getting his little book "A Man and His Lathe" as well.

Plus one for that and it reminds me that it would be worth checking that any fitted chuck, etc is not stuck.

Thread: How would you make these

What is the material and have you got plenty of it?

If you have enough to practise on then you will probably end up with two that are sufficently alike - I am assuming the use of miniature hand-manipulated tools, although the main features could be established with a conventional parting tool.
