I thought I posted THIS LINK to Edward's popular mechanics earlier. .......unfortunately it doesn't appear to be downloadable.. I have a pdf of it in my files so it must be around somewhere. No idea where I got it though. |

Michael, I don't think anyone has mentioned this but there is a construction article of a small, simple hand shaping machine in ME #2681 (Oct 9 1952). See pic. If you're interested and don't have that issue, PM me.

There are many advantages to adding an online link as mentioned above I think perhaps you are overlooking one difficulty for the publishers. Many people would be quite capable of constructing the machine simply from the drawings. Simply putting all the drawings on an open website is tantamount to giving away the design to all and sundry. It could be done by limiting access to the website to those with current magazine subscriptions but that means another level of complexity. And it would still fall into the same paranoia category that sees the publisher, rightly or wrongly, restrict the printing options of digital issues lest they show up on the internet. And that doesn't even address the author's rights. Some people are vary wary of letting high quality copies of their designs get around lest they be used inappropriately. Problem of using a pair of wedges (If not used in the hole of the quill) is that they can remove the chuck from the morse taper tang, leaving the tang still stuck in the quill. I thought that but he did say it was a collet chuck |

Thanks for the workaround.
Sounds like that old dichotomy from the working days: You can either work around a bad system and get the job done. The powers that be will sit back happy that the system works and you'll be "working around" forever. Or you can work exactly to the bad system, showing it up for what it is, and probably getting it corrected in short order. Short term pain for long term gain. Bear in mind that this problem is eminently fixable - it can be set up to require smileys to be pulled from the drop-down only. The reason it isn't is because some ("texting-types" Edited By OMG on 13/10/2013 17:26:03 |
Thread: Book mark Email notification not working |
10/10/2013 17:15:50 |
I don't have any problem with email notifications and I haven't seen anyone else complaining which suggests that the email is being sent but not ending up in your inbox. Probably because it's being mistaken for spam. If you are using online mail e.g. gmail/hotmail (MailLive/Outlook)/Yahoo etc I would suggest you go into them online and check their spam boxes. Same thing if you are using an email client such as Outlook or Outlook Express or other which picks up from any of those services. If you are using your ISP's email service then perhaps your email client has its own spam trap. Failing that you could check with your ISP to see if he's running an overly aggressive spam filter at his end. |
10/10/2013 01:35:03 |
It's certainly working for me (Windows 8) which suggests it's not a website problem. If you've just upgraded Windows it might suggest email client problems perhaps a spam-filter that hasn't been taught to recognise the ME site email. What email client are you using? When you upgraded Windows, did you do a completely fresh installation or did you upgrade the existing XP installation? Either way you can't be sure that your email settings were preserved. |
Thread: What is happening to this site ? |
07/10/2013 16:16:21 |
Patrick, I think perhaps that it was references such as "articles from this website" that gave me that impression. I couldn't offhand think of any articles that originate on this website (as opposed to articles copied here from the magazine or somewhere else) other than postings in the forums (which might be loosely termed articles). At any rate I'm relieved to hear that our musings won't be spread over facebook, twitter et al. |

OTOH throw the toys out the pram to quote a recent term, plug your own web site and books and that's how you earn money.
This apparently refers to the website of HH and the books of GM. How HH is supposed to be making money from his website is beyond me. There is no advertising just a lot of free information. Rather than suggesting that you buy a book he tells you (for free) what's in the book instead. Similarly with GM. If he's even mentioned his books around here it was only in passing comments. (Nor is it likely he'd get away with it since the books are from a rival publisher). He has given freely of his knowledge and given free copies of project plans for anyone who cares to ask. This must be one of the most cynical, small-minded comments we've seen here. That it comes from someone with one posting to his credit beggars belief and suggests that a regular member is hiding behind a new identity. .... and the "toys and prams" reference is used by a small group of people here who like to parade their moral superiority over others' behaviour, while hypocritically, and frequently, behaving in the same or worse fashion when it suits them. Those I could live without. The loss of HH and GM will take some getting used to. |

The other thing that some members reacted to in recent times was the suggestion that the use of Social Media might have a place in this community. (It seemed to be overlooked by some that taking part was purely optional.)
Diane, the impression I got was that MTM would be taking selections from these forums and posting them on social media. I didn't get any impression that permission would be asked. I would be extremely happy if you can assure me that I was wrong. |

Hmm. FF 24.0 here (18 is stone age!), but I can't see where to change the language. I installed teh plugin several versions ago, but it appears never to have worked.
In the old days, it would be stone age. Back when Mozilla used to roll out well-tested new version every 6 months to a year. Not these days though when they push out the stuff every few weeks trying to keep up with Chrome and then fix, fix, fix for the bugs. I keep an eye on mozilla.support.firefox and when (if ) 24 looks reasonably stable I may update This may help with the spell checker. |

Well .... yes .... but link colours weren't the issue. Gray was having trouble with the black bar at the top of the page and when I tried it, it certainly removed that. And yes, of course it affects all sites - it's a default configuration option after all. But that sounds like it might be an advantage in Gray's case. |

I have issues with the new format, I hate the black bars that appear above a thread posting, it may be very cool, so therefore if something is not to my taste I have two options, put up with it and get a headache or stay away, I intend to choose the latter.
Don't know if this helps, Gray, or if you've perhaps tried this already but your browser settings should allow you to alter the way a page is presented. Usually there is something like "Allow sites to choose their own colors (sic) instead of mine" buried in the options. It's usually checked by default but can be unchecked. In Firefox, I was able to get rid of the black bar altogether using that (it did a few other strange things to the page too so it might need to be played with). |

Thread: Instructions for using SCAYT? |
04/10/2013 17:59:34 |
No, you didn't imagine it, Ian. The way the editor was configured, it suppressed the (built-in or add-on) spell-checker in your browser. You had to use SCAYT or nothing. Katy has changed it so that your browser spell-checker is not longer suppressed. By default most (all?) browser spell checkers underline or otherwise highlight spelling errors and you right-click on them to choose what course of action you want. That right click conflicts with something in the editor so you have to use ctrl-right-click instead. |
