Hi I got one back on that..

A friend ask me to build a cabinet and gave the sizes in cm. I directly used that as mm and build one as such.

Instant new scale model 1:10.

I did build the other one, converted it to mm and kept it out of view.

The LOOK I got were priceless.

and the LOOK I got when the real one were handed over also Priceless. Instant training.. all requests are now in mm.

Thread: case hardening with sugar-question about terms used

Hi

Sugar chemical composition is C12 H22 O11 That is when it is burned it turns Black, the water part burns off and the carbon part remains. unfortunate the bruning action melts the sugar so a lot of the original sugar remains intact. If the process is done with the aid of Sulphuric Acid to strip the water moluces and leave the carbon component in tact with the right concentartion and volume of Acid a dry foam remain. this is pure Carbon, and should be ideal for case hardening.

This issue about ads running over the post is as recurring as days on a calendar.

Some Pages get it right on the site and some not on the same site. Look at this post and the one about fitting a workshop in a space.

Sure it is a setting on the page itself that causes this repeating occurrence.

Come on Software developer get your act together. It is called Programming Standards

Hi I have seen something working on the same principal.
The one side runs on the lefthand thread and the other side runs on the righthand thread. it changed a damper position. Release one side and taking up the slack on the other. The shaft looked like a Yankee Screwdriver with two halfnuts sitting on either side of the shaft.

This clamp is manufactured by Kreg tools.
It is used with a pocket hole jig.
Try one of the hardwarestores where you can by spesialist tools.

Hi
I made myself a threading too sharpner ad in Martin Cleeve's book.
In fact I made two, Set one for each side of the bit to exactly 60 degrees then it is simply setting the bit in the Jig and sharpen it. it applies to Internal and External bits.
No fuss no Mess. Just sharpen and go.

Some time ago I requested that I could download the MEW Digital Edition, when it were still a separate subscription
The answer were NO, To aviod someone selling it on E-Bay.
Well I abandoned The Digital issues do to have a copy on rental, because you have to pay everytime you want to view it and sometimes it have different issues, like the stated above.
I now scan my printed copies to have them in digital format on my laptop to read while travelling, which I do often, no plans to sell them. not now or in the future.

Looking at the pictures, well there is more swarf in any one of those than what I have made in a couple of workshop sessions, lathe and milling machine. Working mostly not in the workshop. making the odd sparepart or repair job. now working on an Independant 4 jaw chuck for woodturning, This will require a lot of meatl removal on both machines but still a far cry from the amount in pic's.
It feels if I also only work in months with a Q.

I use a combination of kitchen towels over table or the other area where swarf, the stuff we make, are falling and then a wet and dry vac to cleanup the shop. The paper towels is cheap and quick to avoid any long cleaning job prevention is better than cure, strips of fridge door seal magnets keep paper towels in place. The same is one on the lathe.

It seem this is a problem all over.
as the knife is a cutting tool like a lathe tool, drill or any other tool to cut with, there are angles that form a guide to sharpen it to.
If the blade profile is parallel and not to thick, I grind in to 5 degrees on both sides 10 degree incluse angle, the blade is set to cut onto the stone, grinding it withe the sharp edge facing the grinder, this is also done on the oilstone during touch-up. if the blade has a wedge shaped profile or a thick blade a secondary angle is grinded at 15 to 20 degree include angle. with the primary grinded at 10 degree include angle. I sharpen the knifes on a water wheel for the final sharpening. Rough sharpeming of the primary angle is done on the belt. The blade must not be polished to a fine edge.
There are on thing that dull a sharp knife quick, and that is heat, from sharpening to washing. No knife is Dishwaher safe. Wash it by hand in luke warm water. This also apply to razor blades.

Hi All
I read the articles about CNC not so musch to do the concertion as I do not have the standard (Myford) Lathe.
My main hobby is woodworking, but there are seperate magazines supplying the required information. I am planning to build a CNC Router, as in past issues of MEW, But in the convertion articles there is some topics about toothed belt pulley cutting and many more, the bottom line for me is what can I learn from others schoolfees, without paying for the errors myself. I long ago accepted the fact. I don't know how to do everything and my way might not be the only way. writing Computer Programs the whole day let you look for something to relax with. Subscription is your choice.

Yes I have a Wixley.
As it is required to cut miter and bewels accurate when making segmented bowls, multisided and angled frames nothing can replace it except a vernier protractor.
I compared the prices between the two an the digital box won on price and ease of use.

A good permanent solution for any accurate degree measurements, even in carpentry is a digital angle box, measure in decimal parts of a degree. Just stick it to your ruler and away you go.

I can recommend the book Screwcutting in the Lathe Martin Cleeve. Workshop Practice series 3, The best book I have read about screwcutting in the lathe. As a real amateur, with no technical training. use this tool to sharpen any lathe tool on a bench grinder. In fact I have three, two used set for the left and righthand side of the thred tool, so it is a breeze to touch-up the tool, swithing between toolholders, once set no changes made.
