Thread: Steel tyre suppliers
09/04/2020 16:40:28

Hello (again) Stuart,

You can try asking m-machine as to my knowledge they have (part) machined their own steel tube for other people for smokeboxes - so they may have some insight if they have machined the 180 x 140. But, of course they may be using large industrial lathes that tackle heavy work without noticing!

I got some large diameter steel tube from them (250mm OD x 230mm ID) and it machined fine. But, that may be from a different supplier or batch etc., to your requirement so not really comparable.

I doubt that you have a lot of choice in the matter in the final count, so ……….

best of luck,

& regards,

Phil

Hello Stuart,

You might like to have a word with M-Machine and see what they can supply. They list steel tube 180mm OD x 140mm ID per inch - amongst many other sizes. They may have something closer to your requirements to reduce machining (and wastage/cost), or perhaps you could adjust to something 'off the shelf?

I think that I got my tube for steel loco-tyres from Benteler Distribution (It was a long time ago). They cut it into 25mm slices for me. BUT....it was really horrible tough vile steel to machine! And took an eternity. Of course there are other similar suppliers.

Phil

Thread: Coronavirus

This thread merely confirms the limits to my education. So, how exactly does one "prepare" Izal medicated toilet-paper before use?

I have 'googled' and searched youtube without success. Perhaps, in ignorance, I am using the wrong search terms tho'.

Regards, in anticipation of someone sharing what could become crucial information.

If you are considering purchasing TurboCad always worth giving Paul Tracey a call or contacting him via email for prices. He used to advertise on this site but seems to have stopped doing-so.

Thread: Soft soldering on a finished copper boiler ??? ... advice needed :-(
12/01/2020 13:54:11

Suggest that you use Loctite 567 thread sealant.

Forget soft-soldering. It was the appropriate technique when 'Curly' wrote his instructions. Modern thread sealant will leave your boiler uncontaminated with soft-solder and allow removal of fixings if required.

Thread: Hollow Stay on a 5" Tich

Maybe for 'blower'? This is its' purpose on smaller versions of Tich. If so it will have a matching control valve on the back-head and a tube in the smokebox to the blower itself.

Phil.

Thread: Where to source bronze or brass plate
19/09/2019 08:58:16

M-machine can also supply 3/8" and 1/2" thick Phosphor Bronze PB 102 sheet so you could probably have a piece cut to the size that suits you if required/preferred.  And, referring back to your original post M-machine can also supply brass flats 1/2" thick up to 6" width cut to length required.

Thread: HSS hire 500 kg folding engine crane
22/06/2019 13:25:52

I own a larger version 1000kg Folding Engine Crane.

It dismantles and the legs and main part of the 'crane' fold into an 'awkward lump' with a base 700mm x 350mm, and a height of 1500mm. All dimensions approximate - but rounded up. I'm guessing that the 500kg is similar in construction so perhaps the 1000kg version will give you an idea if it will fit or not. The 'detached parts' are individually smaller of course, the largest individual detaching part is the jib.

LBSC's design for his 'trailer wagon' for Tich is covered in Model Engineer magazine, 2 April 1959, Vol 120, Issue 319, pages 414 - 416 & 423.

There is a general arrangement drawing, and reduced detail dimensioned drawings of underframe, 'tank' (body), wheels, buffers, axle-boxes, etc., accompanied by a descriptive construction text.

Phil
