Whilst I have not done this myself I cannot see any reason why a displacement lubricator fitted to the steam-chest should not (in broad terms) 'work' in providing lubrication.

Jasonb may have some insight based on experience?

Thread: MJEng Fowler A7 - what CAN'T I do on an ML7?
30/11/2022 10:27:39

Note that MJ Engineering cannot currently supply rolled steel wheels.

I have just spoken with Mr Barsby who has given me this information.  He is currently looking for someone who can roll the rims, so if anyone knows of a company who can do-so then perhaps let him know - or even post here so that we can all take advantage!

Oh well, at least has bumped the thread so may elicit more helpful responses. (\Every cloud, etc., etc.)

Have you had a look at the other (five) threads on this subject on this forum? They contain some links and thoughts which may be of interest.

This thread on the subject, for example, which elicited the greatest response references, amongst other sources, a BHI paper on the subject of the possible lunar calendar.

OK, the challenge has been thrown-down & I'm rough, tough, and unshockable. My 'disposition' is definitely not "delicate".

So ........

(although perhaps with a just a little trepidation tho'  )....

I'm askin' about Ramon's "soft jaws".

(whilst assuming that this doesn't refer to some do-it-yersel' dentistry using JB Weld)

Please tell ......?? P'raps you moulded some soft jaws from JB Weld??

Phil

Thread: You Couldn't Make It Up
18/11/2022 16:12:25

Quick google search shows that Zakaria Mohammed was arrested on 26th March 2018 and sentenced on 4th October 2018. In Birmingham Crown Court he pleaded guilty to all charges.

His period of imprisonment would have counted as starting from his arrest as he was held in custody pending trial and the 14 years would be reduced to 7 in custody ('automatic release', with the remainder being served on licence) given his pleading guilty and presumably 'good behavior' whilst imprisoned. He has therefore served approximately four and a half years thus far. He would have been assessed and seen by a Parole Board before being moved to 'category D' (Open Prison in popular language) and have been considered no risk to the public and a low risk of absconding. He would have been serving his sentence under category D as a 'half-way house' in preparation for release and with the object of rehabilitation.

When recaptured he will now serve the full term of his sentence in secure prison.

& Martin beat me to it!!!

Thread: britannia smokebox doors
13/11/2022 12:26:25

Hello David,

Here are the firebox doors.

Here is picture showing the smokebox door.

The (detached) smokebox door is central to this picture and has the 'dart', or device for securing it closed lying on it.

Hopefully those pics will assist you in identifying at which end of the boiler your problem lies.

From your description I suspect that your issue is with the firebox doors, which will often be 'stiff' until they become a little worn. If this is so a moderator may be able to amend your thread title on your behalf. Is your loco from a kit? If, so there may be some 'fixes' if this is a common issue. (Note: from what I have seen all the kits need additional works of various types to 'sort' them). The slides that the doors run-in may need some (very gentle) fettling or adjustment if they are simply 'sticky' or too stiff to use easily, and/or the slot in the operating lever that allows coordinated opening may need smoothing. The doors themselves may benefit from smoothing where they run on or on the sliders. Maybe the bottom door slider needs a slot adding behind it so coal-dust can fall-through and not 'clog' the runner if your issue arises when running.

There are owners of both kit-built and 'scratch-built' Britannias on Model Engineering Clearing House who may be able to assist. The author of the recent Britannia kit rebuild series in Model Engineer Magazine is an active member there and also drops in on this site occasionally so he may spot your posting.

Regards,

Phil

Thread: Cliff Almond, William Spence, Guinness loco: Contact?
24/08/2022 15:55:10

I'm still trying, without any success whatsoever, to contact Cliff (Clifford) Almond, author of 'William Spence' series, currently running in Model Engineer magazine.

I have even tried contacting him via email through the Editor, Martin Evans.

Someone must know Cliff Almond - he runs the Wensleydale Model Engineering Society. Any members on here??

If anyone can draw his attention to this thread or provide contact details it would be helpful.

Thanks

Phil

Experiment winding spring on appropriately sized straight former(s) to find amount wire 'relaxes' after winding.

Make 'internal barrel' former from plastic or friable material (epoxy??, plaster??) around a length of straight rod adjusting dimensions of both in light of above.

Select suitable tpi on lathe.

Turn lathe by hand whilst winding spring.

Abrade friable 'barrel-shaped material (carefully) away from central rod core through gaps in spring & withdraw central rod.

Job done???

The locomotive appears to be 'Boxhill' a (side) tank loco in 5" gauge designed by Martin Evans.

Searching 'completed listings' on ebay using appropriate search-terms may give some idea of value. Alternatively, or in addition, as a start-point a dealer will give you an estimate of how-much he would give you based on photographs.

You will widen your market (and thus possibly enhance price) by offering delivery paid-for by purchaser in some form.

Still hoping tho' .......

Thanks for the suggestion Brian. Was hoping to use Martin Evans as a last resort as seems a bit 'cheeky' to use the editor as a mail-boy! But, I feel that it may come-down to that.

Hello,

Does anyone have contact details for Cliff (Clifford) Almond, author of William Spence, the construction series about the Guinness 'tram' narrow-gauge locomotives please? Or is in contact with him to perhaps refer him to the forum?

I have tried PMs to the three possible/probable account names on this forum, and two email addresses culled from postings and the Wensleydale Model Engineering Society without success.

OP,

I suggest that you post the same question on Model Engineering Clearing House, (under 'General Chat' heading) which has amongst the membership a number of owners and builders of LNWR locomotives. The originator and previous owner of Phoenix Paints is also an active member so may spot your posting and have some suggestions.

Phil
