Thread: 5 inch Scale Buffers |

Tubal Cain, Model Engineer's Handbook give the following data for 5" gauge, 1 1/16" to the foot: .Buffer height from rail: 3 21/32"
Hope that's of some assistance.

Thread: Chester MF42B |
25/04/2016 08:52:40 |
Hello, I have a MF42B too. (no.99 0790) All the dial markings are dual-purpose metric/imperial. Change-wheels for cutting imperial or metric threads were included with the machine as new, so by reference to the chart in the manual you can cut either by choosing appropriate ratios. I think that change-wheels are available from Chester if you are missing any. Regards, Phil |

@ Brian Hutchings For years I used firebricks. However I switched to Vermiculite as an experiment, and found it so much easier that I almost never use my firebricks nowadays. The main exception is usually when I want to retain heat in an area when I usually use the broken firebricks as 'packing', much as you seem to do. Regards, Phil |

To give you an idea..... I silver-soldered a 3.5" Tich boiler with a 6kw Bullfinch burner (4105, 15mm approx' diam.) without any problem. Though admittedly it was not my first locomotive boiler. Even silver soldered all the stays inside the firebox etc., using this burner. Plenty of vermiculite and very careful packing to minimise heat losses is essential. Tich is a little smaller than Minnie. Tich = 60mm o/d boiler, 180mm long. Regards,

Garba-Verlag supply plans for BR38 (P8) & some of the alternative tenders (separately) in 5" gauge. Live Steam Service supply castings for same. (Download their catalogue to find them). As you will see both the above have a number of other interesting German prototypes in their catalogues. I'll be interested to read how you get on with your searches & construction.

Thread: Tich Small Boiler Joint question |
15/12/2015 20:55:31 |
When I built my small boiler Tich I overlapped the boiler joint by about half an inch and silver-soldered it, in accordance with the instructions that you quote. This makes a good joint but it makes the fitting of the smoke-box end tube-plate and subsequently the boiler tube into the smoke-box a little more difficult as the end of the boiler can not be formed into a circle. The boiler -> smoke-box joint must be airtight. The use of a lapped strip over a butted joint is more in keeping with modern practice and makes the fitting of the tube-plate and then boiler into the smoke-box with an airtight joint easier. The drawings in the background look like the 'Operator's Manual'. Scroll down here. The Italian site says that construction was made more difficult due to the absence of drawings and information apart from a very few drawings. His engine/motor came as a set of castings and drawings (engine only) from Coles Power in the USA. However he is extremely disparaging about the company.

Adams 380 class?? Scroll down to pic 218.
Knowing it is LSWR should allow location identification as probable route known.

If UK - but refer to posting by Rik Shaw above at 18:01:37 suggesting French origin: The headcode the locomotive is carrying: two white diamonds, one centrally, one on right upper position would conform with a LSWR locomotive routed: Salisbury, Southampton West & Portsmouth via Netley. Refer No:24 here: **LINK**
However the locomotive appears to be additionally carrying a single lamp in the left upper position. (May indicate number 44 on the schema.) Further to my earlier posting don't think that Highland Railway used 'routing indicators' of this type.
Might be worth considering LSWR locomotives??
The large cab-front 'look-outs' are quite distinctive, and the lining appears to be a lighter colour surrounded by a darker colour. The boiler hand-rail running over the top of the smokebox-front and sand-boxes built into and ahead of front driving splashers might help identification. Certainly looks like a 4-4-0 wheel configuration.

Some discussion of regulators here, with a specific reference to the Tich regulator. As regards the water gauge fittings I cannot advise as I made my own, it was not too onerous. Regards, Phil.

Mr Thompson, I might be able to assist you. If you want, perhaps send me an email or Message through this site and I will get back to you. It may take me a couple of days to respond as somehow I have allowed real life to get in the way of model-engineering! Regards, Phil |
Thread: Dimensional errors in LBSC Doris drawings |

Suggest that you try looking on this site: (You may have to join to use the site, but it is free, etc.) Some of the members have this locomotive, and at least one, username runner42 is currently building. I know that he has found an error in the regulator block. There is also an interesting series of posts on bringing the boiler up to date - with particular reference to meeting the current 'Aussie boiler regs'. (The site is run and administered by an Australian, and has a strong representation from that area.) Regards, Phil |
Thread: 3 1/2 inch small boilered TICH |

I made my Tich with locking bolt on return crank as shown in the picture at the bottom of the previous page. It seems adequate to hold the return crank as nothing has moved. I chose this method as I liked the look, wanted an easily removable and adjustable return crank and was unsure of my fixing and adjustment skills at the time of construction. I guess you could arrange the fixing bolt to partially pass through one side of crankpin once the crank position was established if you wanted that look combined with a firm fixing. Regards, Phil |

I made my small-boiler Tich to the drawing dimensions as shown in Stephen's post and it runs fine. BUT..... as I have not made fittings to the book dimensions I cannot give you a comparison. However I would echo Julian's comments above as it is well known that LBSC (knowingly) rounded many of his valve gear dimensions with a view to simplification for those constructors of the period who were using basic measuring tools and equipment.
