Automatic transmission oil does the same job as most of the hydraulic oils and it's usually available in smaller quantities from motor stores. John S. |
Thread: Is this hobby dying? |
04/09/2010 20:49:59 |
I personally don't think it's dying as such but redefining itself. Over the last few years when I have been attending shows I have noticed that the total gate has remained pretty constant, so at least there is the same interest. Now I know that it's basically an older persons game and as such these people naturally tend to pass on but given they pass on and no one takes up the mantle then show attendance would have dropped ? I follow a few various forums and ironically in a conversation only last week with Tony Jeffree I mentioned that I was seeing a lot more posts from beginners with one of the cheaper Chinese lathes asking for advise on using it, many being of a younger age or just freshly retired. I can only conclude that this is the next generation on of old fogies ! ? Add to this I also run / moderate a couple of CNC forums and the new members signing up on them are very high. Most are younger people, 25 to 45 and all are very keen. Whether they will go on to build models is another matter, just as most of my friends have workshops but none build models, most are into vintage or classic vehicles. John S. |

Posted by Dinosaur Engineer on 04/09/2010 14:05:26:In the search of battery replacement instructions I did notice that a few american companies complained about the lack of maintenance information & spare parts for this model. . There are no spare parts for this model, everything inside is needed. John S. |

No Lawrie what I was saying is that we have people like David driving the magazine as they know roughly what is needed for the punter but at the top end of the scale we have shirts that have not been to a show [ I remember David saying that the head shed had to be dragged to a show to see what it was all about ], know nothing about the hobby but regard the group of magazines purely as business. Cynical or not it is a cash cow, if it wasn't it would have died ages ago. It's not a mom and pop weekend operation because they are interested in it. It has a board of directors and shareholders. Remember in the last 15 years it has changed hands at least 3 times and it's not been for four pounds seventeen shillings and ninepence. Magicalia bought Encanta for just under £3 million pounds and has a further £100m to spend on acquisitions according to the Telegraph. so I'm sure that the head shed isn't seen in a boiler suit with grease top on with Train Driver stiched on. I used to have a set of ME's from 1940 to 2000 before I got rid of them. I clearly remember that in the war years they showed a picture of the offices that had been bombed out but they still went to print. However sometime around 1998 ?? they stopped putting the dates on the ME mag, only the serial numbers because they got that far out of step with distribution and missing the date off stopped complains that it was late. Whether it was a print issue or management I dare say will not be known as there were a lot of changes going on. Print runs with printers are not new, it happens all over. One of the MEW's was released on a short run and many didn't get their copies, I believe it was about issue 60 / 70 and subscriptions were extended one issue. This is where the digital editions come into their own to fill gaps in. One thing to remember here is that these specialist magazines have an editor and possibly a sub editor who are involved with the subject and they have to do their best to [a] please like minded people and [b] please the shirts in management who basically don't have a clue past figures and circulation numbers. To us it's a hobby, to them it's a cash cow. John S. |

I should think this has got to be a management decision given that the electronic copy is put to bed first because that's how the printers get it. Only David can explain the reasoning behind this. John S. |

Yer not poking it hard enough. Don't dither man get a sharpened rake and poke it with the sharp end. Make sure you have a decent grimace on your face but don't keep your mouth open, chances are when the battery lets go it will go down your throat / shirt neck / budgie cage [ delete as required .] John S. |

Dear Marge, I have 7 lathes in total of different sizes. Only one has a slotted cross slide and that one is virtually scrap and is not used any more. I am very concerned that this lack of a slotted cross slide is holding me back in my endeavours to become a perfect machinist. So do I need to convert all these various behemoths to slotted cross slide operation or will it be OK to continue to operate as a non perfect hairy arsed machinist. Signed, Lost from Long Eaton. What is the published release date to the public ? As an aside I have only had time for a quick perusal [ stupid customers getting in the way again ] but this months looks very interesting in that it seems to have a good cross section of articles. John S. |

Must be fool proof, I use one virtually weekly. I have a large Hoffman head set up on one end of the Bridgeport Mill / Drill and it lives there all the while unless I need more real estate for the odd job. It's powered from an external power supply because of the size of it and as I say it's in constant use doing splines , off set keyways etc. I have not used any dividing plates for the last 6 or 7 years, in fact not since I finished up putting forty one and a half splines on an Alfa Romero half shaft ![]() John S. |

My trick for a circular form tool is to braze a ball bearing of the correct size onto a piece of mild steel. The sticky out bit need to be a tad less than the OD of the ball. Then grind the top of the bearing so that it's reduced in hight by half and thats it, all clearances are present and you have a perfect sphere. John S. |
