Thread: How did diesel buses and taxis cope with short low speed journeys in London?
29/03/2023 15:57:39

I sold my 22 year old Audi Quattro A6 estate to a friend last year - diesel, 465k kms on the clock, still going strong - only sold it because some of the trim started to time expire - especially some plastic parts permenantly exposed to the sun.
In my 10 year ownership, I drove a mix of 1000-1500km trips and local trips.

Built like a brick outhouse, bought a newer one to replace it with only 250k kms

Thread: Spam emails

Interesting Simon, but to be honest I can't remember the last time I had one - my Gmail spam filter just seems to work! Anything that did sneak through would tend to stand out like a sore thumb!

Allow me to share some of mine with you - I have so many opportunities for riches beyond my dreams that someone else should benefit as well cheeky

This link (**LINK** has a very interesting explanation why phishing emails are so badly written.

In short, if you are capable of identifying the spelling and bad grammar errors, you are too switched on to be a suitable candidate target. Thus, it acts as a sort of pre-filter, with responses likely only from those who are unable to see the issues.

‘‘Twas only a tongue in cheek comment that we only cut gaps.

Sorry, been a long day at the money generating site! Comment reviewed and appreciated - this time!

You cannot have or cut a 59 and1/2 tooth wheel.

You can however have and cut a 59 and 1/2 gap wheel.

🥴

Strictly I have a wheel with 58 teeth and an uncut part of the wheel that is less than the width required. If I had made that last cut I would have had 59 fully formed teeth and a 60th one that had been part machined on one side.

For the purposes of this thread, I suggest that constitutes 59 1/2, others may differ, as is their prerogative...

My long running clock project includes a 59 1/2 tooth wheel.

Thread: Resin Printers - Review in hand
14/03/2023 18:01:49

Hi Neil,

Interested in the cleaning up process and also how easy it is to just walk in and print something. My existing FFD printer can be untouched for a couple of months and then (usually) springs immediately back to life.

The resin printers I saw a few years back gave the impression of being a potentially very messy process and not suitable for e.g. alongside my desk in my office.

If you accidentally incinerate an alkaline button cell the contents boil and the case opens with a crack.

If you short a new one out, it heats up and does the same.

If you accidentally incinerate a box full it can be quite exciting smiley

I hesitate to ask how you have such deep knowledge of this subject surprise

Thread: How close have you got to a Darwin Award?
13/02/2023 09:43:05

Rebuiilding a substantial greenhouse (6m x 4m) I had bought and dismantled. Steel T section primarily with the panes of glass sitting either side of the tail to the tee.

I was up a step ladder with a pane, roughly 0.5m x 1.5m and juggling it into place to go up through the gap between the two Ts and then to sit in place.

Glass decided it wasn't going to sit in place, dropped down, hit the top of the step ladder, exploded and one large piece removed a small piece of skin on my knee - which bled like fury. another few inches and it would have bled rather more...
Put the remaining panes in another way after that - and after some time spent in contemplation....

Thread: Do many people run 2 Milling Spindles
08/02/2023 18:57:29

I do as well - I locate the 2nd HSS spindle using the main MT2 bore so that high speed (~12000rpm) and low speed (2450rpm) are co-located in X and Y planes.

Like this (apologies for the enormous amount of clutter!):

Since everyone is too polite to say it - these are crap and you should all throw them in the bin and start again with something new.

but what do you then uuse when you have a soldering job requiring a collosal amount of heat input - especially if naked flames are not possible?
I know that new ones are available in this wattage but into the cubic-money department for what is essentially an element and a large lump of copper.

Personally, I'm all for fixing something that is as functionally as good as anything available off the shelf today - but that's my own preference, others will I am sure differ§

Thread: Temperature sensor DS 18B20
03/01/2023 22:35:56

My own experience of using 18B20s in external situations mirrors the results that Bob is seeing - after several years one bit in the serial stream appears to get stuck and show a wierd value on an intermittent basis - which steadily gets worse.

I have probably had 3 go in the past 7-8 years, quickest cure is unsolder old device and solder in new one. Total cost a few cents and 10 minutes in my case, not sure if Bob's is less easy to access.

HNY to all,

Thread: Excavating a deep hole in a log
04/11/2022 14:08:20

Thanks all for your thoughts and ideas. I think I will proceed with the wood carving route. My afforts to date using drilling methods have proved laborious and slow, hopefully this will allow some more speed.

Unfortunately lighting open fires around here is strictly forbidden - and whilst I tend to treat such instructions with a certain 'flexibility', our experiences a few years back have encouraged me to follow the rules...this took 4 days to extinguish with 9 water bombers and helicopters plus ground based firefighters and came to around 200m of our house. Concentrates the mind!

Wood carving results will be relayed back to the forum!

04/11/2022 10:26:26

Earlier this year, we had a large fir tree chopped down and the trunk was sliced into a number of "cheeses", some of which were scattered across the garden on request from Madame.

img_4974.jpg

The subsequent request is to excavate the cheeses to provide a plant holder surprise.

The wood is reasonably dry but my attempts with a drill and the largest spade bit I could find are slow and not effective. A router doesn't reach down far enough. My chain saw is only using (dangerously) the tip. I have contelplated a mini tct wood saw blade in an angle grinder but not proceeded any further.

Faced with a similar problem to similar dimensions (roughly 0.5m across, depth to say 30cm), how would "YOU" proceed.....?
BTW, once one is completed, I have a further 6 to do.....

All ideas welcomed!

Roland, PM sent.

11/09/2022 21:24:51

Hi Roland, good to hear that there’s another model engineer local to me (where local equates to about 2 hours!). My interests tend towards CNC and general bricolage although I restarted work on a clock I started some 10 years ago.
I am based in St Cannat, 13760, always interested to meet up with fellow enthusiasts.

Thank you for your efforts in constructing these indexes - just located the article on a clock depthing tool that I recalled reading - and thought it was a couple of years back, whereas in reality it was April/May 2015....

The stock answer to those who complain is to write an article for publication and enlighten us. I have written articles for ME and MEW, athough nothing recent for a variety of reasons.

So the challenge for Peter Bryce and Iain Hogg is to put pen to paper!

Thread: Hyper Velocity Impact Technology
06/07/2021 15:03:07

I think this site may even rival some of those discovered by Michael over the years!

Hyper velocity shield development

Kept me agog for quite a while until revenue generating activities got in the way.nerd

For those unwilling to click, it is NASA's " Astromaterials Research & Exploration Science " associated with impact shields in space - probably limited direct use to the ME community but maybe there are some useful concepts to be adapted...
